This role provides technical guidance to assembly technicians, coordinates daily workflow, troubleshoots assembly issues, and supports continuous improvement initiatives to meet production objectives. Technical training, vocational certification, or associate degree in a manufacturing or technical field is preferred.Experience: Minimum of 3–5 years of manufacturing or assembly experience, with prior leadership or lead technician experience preferred.Demonstrated experience leading or mentoring manufacturing, assembly, or production personnel in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.Proficiency in reading blueprints, technical drawings, assembly instructions, and manufacturing documentation. With nearly 80,000 square feet of building and associated utilities, you will not only be responsible for the planning, installation and performance of preventive and corrective maintenance, and unplanned servicing of facility systems and manufacturing equipment, but also assist in responding to trouble calls where your skills may also apply.     Responsibilities

    Develop Advanced Automated Manufacturing Equipment: Lead the design and implementation of automated manufacturing systems incorporating industrial robotics, motion systems, sensing, and vision technologies. Define system architectures that prioritize reliability, scalability, and maintainability.

    Controls and System Integration: Support controls engineers, who will develop and integrate electrical and controls systems using industrial PLCs, standard communication protocols, and HMI platforms. Support data acquisition and performance monitoring to evaluate and improve system behavior. Work with controls engineers to integrate industrial robotic systems to improve consistency, precision, and production efficiency within automated manufacturing cells.

    Mechanical Design and DFM Support: Design mechanical components and assemblies using 3D CAD and GD&T principles. Generate detailed fabrication drawings and provide design-for-manufacturing feedback to improve automation performance and robustness.

    Risk and Failure Analysis: Conduct product and process failure analyses, including DFMEA and PFMEA, to identify risks, implement mitigations, and support high system uptime.

    Project and Program Ownership: Plan and execute multiple projects simultaneously by setting milestones, tracking progress, managing risks, and coordinating cross-functional resources. Support the development of internal processes that enable predictable delivery.

    Manufacturing Process Optimization: Evaluate and improve automated manufacturing workflows by analyzing cycle times, material flow, automation ROI, and work-in-process buffering to support consistent production output. 

    Technical Documentation and Handover: Create comprehensive documentation including electrical and pneumatic schematics, bills of materials, maintenance documentation, spare parts lists, and troubleshooting guides to support long-term operation.

    Safety and Regulatory Compliance: Collaborate with EHS stakeholders to perform risk assessments, define personal safety requirements, and integrate appropriate guarding.

    Supplier and Integrator Management: Work with procurement and external vendors to develop RFQs, define technical specifications, manage build and installation phases, and lead factory and site acceptance testing for robots, cobots, palletizers, and other actuated parts of the production line.  Support and coordinate with controls engineers who will own controls hardware definition and procurement.

We are seeking an engineer who combines deep optics and controls expertise with hands‑on system integration experience, and who thrives in solving multi‑disciplinary problems at the limits of precision, timing, and speed.ResponsibilitiesDesign, implement, and tune adaptive optics control algorithms for high‑energy laser systems, including wavefront correction, beam pointing, and jitter rejectionDevelop control strategies for fast steering mirrors (FSMs) and slow steering mirrors (SSMs), including multi‑loop, multi‑rate, and hierarchical control architecturesIntegrate and commission beam diagnostics and position sensors, such as wavefront sensors, quad cells, high-speed cameras, and wave meters, into real‑time closed‑loop optical control systemsDesign, implement, and validate time‑of‑flight (TOF)–based tracking, synchronization, and timing systems for target insertion, engagement timing, and laser coordinationPerform system‑level modeling and analysis of optical control performance, including latency, bandwidth, stability margins, noise propagation, and timing error budgetsPlan and execute laboratory, subsystem, and in‑situ commissioning tests to validate algorithms and control performance against system requirementsCollaborate with laser physics, optical, mechanical, electrical, and controls teams to define system interfaces, sensor/actuator placement, and operational conceptsGenerate and maintain rigorous technical documentation, including control specifications, algorithm descriptions, requirements, interface definitions, test plans, and validation reportsSupport technical reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR, TRR) with quantitative analysis and experimental dataSupport system commissioning, operations, and iterative performance improvement of deployed optical control systemsQualificationsEducation: Bachelor's degree or higher in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Mechatronics, or a closely related fieldExperience: 5+ years of experience in optical systems, control systems, or adaptive optics, with demonstrated hands‑on implementation experienceAdaptive Optics (AO) experience demonstrated through prior hands‑on experience with:Development and tuning of adaptive optics closed‑loop control systems, including wavefront reconstruction and correctionPractical experience with wavefront sensing technologies (e.g., Shack‑Hartmann or equivalent), including calibration, alignment, and noise characterizationDesign and implementation of real‑time AO control algorithms, with attention to latency, bandwidth, and stabilityHands‑on integration and control of fast steering mirrors (FSMs) and slow steering mirrors (SSMs)Ability to model AO system performance end‑to‑end, including sensor noise, actuator dynamics, timing, and control‑law effectsExperience validating AO performance through laboratory testing and in‑system commissioning, not simulation aloneStrong understanding of beam quality, pointing error, jitter, and wavefront error budgetingStrong foundation in control theory, including classical and modern methods applied to real‑time physical systemsProficiency with algorithm development and analysis tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, Python, or equivalent numerical environmentsHands-on experience integrating sensors and actuators into closed‑loop optical or electromechanical control systemsAbility to work safely in laboratory and industrial environments involving high‑power lasers, high voltage, and precision equipmentMust be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (Green Card holder), or otherwise authorized to work in the United StatesDesiredExperience with high‑energy or high‑average‑power laser adaptive optics, including thermal and dynamic beam distortionsFamiliarity with advanced or predictive control techniques applied to AO systems (e.g., LQG, model‑based observers)Implementation of AO or beam‑control algorithms on real‑time hardware platforms (FPGA, DSP, GPU, or similar)Integration of AO systems with precision timing or TOF‑based synchronization systemsExperience with optical metrology and interferometric techniques for wavefront and beam characterizationParticipation in AO‑related design reviews, test readiness reviews, or commissioning campaignsExposure to operation in demanding environments such as vacuum systems, vibration, thermal gradients, or high‑power laser facilitiesCandidates may be considered for other positions at Xcimer Energy, and our actual base salary will be determined on an individual basis and may vary based on job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience.
