    Job Description

    We are seeking a Principal Engineer, Software Development Apps to join our innovative team in Irvine, United States. In this pivotal role, you will lead the design and development of cutting-edge software applications, driving technical excellence and innovation across our organization.

    Job Description

    Position Overview:

    We're inviting motivated graduate students to apply for our Hardware Development Engineer Internship. In this role, you will gain invaluable experience with advanced measurement technologies, including UV microscopes and Picoscale laser interferometers, focusing on the measurement and analysis of magnetic recording heads. This internship is an exceptional opportunity to contribute to the innovation and development of data storage technology.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Use state-of-the-art equipment to measure the span of magnetic recording heads, applying your skills in UV microscopy and laser interferometry.Accurately measure head deformations (both in-plane and out-of-plane) using advanced interferometry techniques.Conduct hands-on measurements on critical components like rowbars and modules, deepening your understanding of data storage hardware.Analyze measurement data using software tools such as MatLab and JMP to identify patterns and correlations, informing future technology developments.Propose experimental projects based on your findings, contributing to the improvement of measurement methods and our understanding of magnetic recording technologies.Use of AFM/MFM to characterize Tape head performance/design.

    Job Description

    Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

    Develop and validate HDD firmware in C/C++ (features, fixes, unit/integration tests)

    Contribute to device-driver–adjacent work across storage I/O: PCIe, SAS, SATA, NVMe

    Script Python tools for test automation, log parsing, and data checks

    Participate in Agile/Scrum (SAFe) rituals; write clear docs for designs, tests, and results

    Debug with analyzers/scopes; collaborate on root-cause and performance tuning

    Qualifications

    Required:

    Pursuing BS/MS in CS, CE, or EE (or similar); graduation target May 2027–May 2028

    Coursework/projects in C or C++ and Embedded/Firmware fundamentals

    Understanding of storage/IO or OS concepts (threads, memory, timing), and willingness to learn HDD specifics

    Strong communicator, collaborative, and curious problem solver

    Preferred:

    Exposure to storage stacks (protocols, link layers) or Linux/Windows driver concepts

    Basics with I²C/SPI/UART/USB, RTOS concepts, or BSP

    Python test tooling experience

    Prior internship/co-op in firmware, storage, or driver development

    This internship opportunity is in Western Digital's Research organization, which tackles advanced long-horizon problems related to data storage, computation and communication. In addition to supporting magnetic storage and memory roadmap of Western Digital, we are focused on several key areas that are well aligned with our existing experimental and theoretical skills, and existing laboratory facilities

    Western Digital Research has a number of projects for ambitious graduate students. Our group has projects emphasizing either embedded AI inference or the design and testing of superconducting quantum computing qubits. Depending on the skills of the student, the responsibilities may be divided into one of two tracks.

    Track 1:

    As an Intern in Quantum Computing, your project will require several of the following tasks:

    The Research team explores new technologies in a broad spectrum of areas ranging from Emerging Non-Volatile Memory (a.k.a Persistent Memory) device design and processes, low-latency system designs, distributed systems, security and cryptography, open source, linux kernel, new programing models, computational storage, information theory, data analytics and machine learning, mechanical systems, thermal modeling, interface protocols and standards, device  drivers, client system design.

    Qualifications

    Required:

    Candidates must possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, with an expected graduation date between June 2025 and June 2026.It is imperative that applicants have the legal right to work in the United States without requiring Western Digital to commence or sponsor an immigration case for employment at any point in the future (for example, H-1B or other employment-based immigration cases).This position demands a high level of commitment and flexibility. Successful candidates must be prepared to engage in periods of on-call duty and overnight work to support our critical 24/7 factory environment.

    Technical Skills:

    The successful candidate must have experience in using C++, C#, as well as source control, object-oriented programming, along with core AI and ML concepts and understandingExperience with the Microsoft Visual Studio development suite and debugging multi-tier architecture is preferred.Knowledge of MS SQL and/or Oracle DB including queries, functions, and stored procedures.Understanding of SECS/GEM protocol and/or other industrial automation standards is a plus.Strong understanding of structured/iterative code development and documentation, and the communications and collaboration with offshore code development team that goes with itExposure to or experience in leveraging ML and AI technologies to support the image analysis, edge computing, and augmented support solutions coming down the road.

    Job Description

    Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

    Develop and validate HDD firmware in C/C++ (features, fixes, unit/integration tests)

    Contribute to device-driver–adjacent work across storage I/O: PCIe, SAS, SATA, NVMe

    Script Python tools for test automation, log parsing, and data checks

    Participate in Agile/Scrum (SAFe) rituals; write clear docs for designs, tests, and results

    Debug with analyzers/scopes; collaborate on root-cause and performance tuning

    Qualifications

    Required:

    Pursuing BS/MS in CS, CE, or EE (or similar); graduation target May 2027–May 2028

    Coursework/projects in C or C++ and Embedded/Firmware fundamentals

    Understanding of storage/IO or OS concepts (threads, memory, timing), and willingness to learn HDD specifics

    Strong communicator, collaborative, and curious problem solver

    Preferred:

    Exposure to storage stacks (protocols, link layers) or Linux/Windows driver concepts

    Basics with I²C/SPI/UART/USB, RTOS concepts, or BSP

    Python test tooling experience

    Prior internship/co-op in firmware, storage, or driver development

    Project experience with microcontrollers or Raspberry Pi/Arduino 

    Familiarity with x86 assembly or MIPS fundamentals
