    Location: Alexandria, Virginia

    Position Summary

    We are seeking an experienced and dependable Building Engineer to support the daily operation, maintenance, and oversight of school facilities throughout the district. The Building Engineers will be responsible for supervising custodial staff and ensuring the effective operation of building automation systems (BAS), electrical systems, plumbing systems, HVAC equipment, and exterior facility maintenance.

    The ideal candidate will possess strong technical knowledge, leadership abilities, and a proactive approach to maintaining safe, clean, and efficient educational environments for students, faculty, and staff.

    Key ResponsibilitiesFacility Operations & Maintenance

    Monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot building automation systems (BAS) to ensure optimal facility performance and energy efficiency.Oversee preventative and corrective maintenance for HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems.Perform routine inspections of building systems and coordinate repairs as needed.Respond promptly to emergency maintenance situations and service requests.Ensure all facilities operate in compliance with safety regulations, local codes, and school district standards.

    Custodial Staff Supervision

    Supervise and coordinate daily activities of custodial personnel.Assign work schedules, inspect completed tasks, and ensure cleanliness standards are maintained.Provide training, guidance, and performance oversight for custodial staff.Ensure proper use and storage of cleaning supplies, tools, and equipment.

    Exterior & Grounds Oversight

    Monitor exterior maintenance activities including sidewalks, parking areas, landscaping coordination, drainage systems, and seasonal maintenance.Coordinate snow removal, debris cleanup, and exterior safety inspections.Ensure school grounds remain safe, functional, and visually maintained.

    Systems & Compliance

    Maintain accurate maintenance logs, inspection records, and work order documentation.Coordinate with contractors, vendors, and school administration regarding facility needs.Assist in implementing energy conservation and sustainability initiatives.Support compliance with OSHA standards and environmental health and safety regulations.

    Qualifications

    High school diploma or GED required; technical or trade school certification preferred.Minimum 3–5 years of experience in building engineering, facility maintenance, or plant operations.Experience working with building automation systems (BAS) required.Strong knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems.Previous experience supervising custodial or maintenance staff preferred.Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.Valid driver’s license may be required.

    Preferred Skills

    Experience working in K-12 schools, higher education, or public sector facilities.Knowledge of preventative maintenance programs.Familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).Strong communication and organizational skills.Ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
