    Position Summary

    VEDP is seeking an Analytics Intern in the Research Division during the summer of 2026 (10 weeks). The Intern will collaborate with the Analytics team to comprehensively update and enhance the data used in VEDP’s International Companies Directory, a public-facing tool on VEDP’s website (VEDP International Company Directory). Updating and maintaining this tool will help attract the attention of and build relationships with international companies in Virginia’s target countries of focus. The new tool, with the updated and verified data, will be featured prominently on VEDP’s new website launching later in the year.

    In addition to helping with database clean-up, augmentation, and verification, the Intern will complete a summer project focused on better understanding foreign direct investment (FDI) trends in Virginia by company and industry relative to competitor states, with a focus on Virginia’s core target sectors.

    The ideal candidate will have an undergraduate background that signals interest in quantitative analysis. The candidate will be seeking on-the-job experience in research and analytics, including data visualization, in a professional, economic development, and/or state government setting. The intern will complete a project and develop a presentation to be shared with staff at the end of the internship. They will be part of an organization-wide cohort, providing networking and professional development opportunities throughout the summer.

    Duties:

    Assist in reviewing and cleaning data on foreign-headquartered companies currently included in the International Company DirectoryAssist in using a variety of proprietary sources for business and corporate intelligence to look for ways to augment the data currently in the database, ensuring that VEDP has the most comprehensive list of foreign-headquartered companies in the database and that all essential fields for these companies are filled outAssist in verifying records for existing and newly-added companies to check the accuracy of data points tied to included companies Assist in creating and maintaining update and input process documentation for the Research Analyst tasked with updating and maintaining the database in the long-term Assist in using other proprietary sources to conduct an analysis as part of a final summer project focused on assessing foreign direct investment trends over the last several years in Virginia relative to other states by industry, country of origin, and region of Virginia Assist in creating or maintaining update process documentation for the International Company DirectoryAssist in other Research Analytics tasks as neededEngage with other staff in the Research Division and VEDP to complete requests related to updating the Directory and completing the final project

    Knowledge and Skills Required:

    Interest in one or more of the following: business, economics, economic development, business or corporate intelligence, data analytics, and database administrationBasic or advanced experience with Microsoft Excel and PowerPointBasic or advanced experience with Microsoft Access preferred, but not required Basic or advanced experience with Python preferred, but not required Keen attention to detail, particularly in data analysis and visualization Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skillsExcellent analytical and problem-solving skillsEffective time management skillsCuriosity and eagerness to learn about new topics and experience new analytical tools and approaches

    Qualifications Preferred:

    Pursuit of a bachelor’s or graduate degree in or with a minor or other demonstrated focus in business, economics, data science, or related fields

    This position will be part-time, in person – working 24 hours per week (3 days) in our downtown Richmond office.

    Position Summary

    The Virginia Office of Education Economics (VOEE) is seeking a summer intern (10 weeks) to support research and evaluation efforts. VOEE's intern will participate in ongoing and novel projects evaluating education and workforce alignment in the Commonwealth. A successful candidate will have a strong interest in education and workforce topics and prior exposure to or training in data cleaning and analytical methods. Interns will complete a project and develop a presentation to be shared with staff at the end of the internship. They will be part of an organization-wide cohort, providing networking and professional development opportunities throughout the summer.

    Samples of work the intern may support include the following:

    Analyze labor market demand for new degree programs: Create profile reports, in partnership with the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV), to provide institutions with labor market data that includes projected job openings, degree production by other institutions offering similar programs, and the top skills needed to identify demand for new programs.Assess performance of statewide internship program: Support the analyses of goals and metrics for a statewide internship program and participate in the assessment of institution readiness to support internships and work-based learning activities at higher education institutions.

    Duties:

    Conduct reviews of relevant studies and materials to enhance VOEE’s knowledge base. For example, the Intern may review other state efforts related to education and/or workforce programs.Assist with projects related to education and workforce alignment as identified by the supervisor or Executive Director. This may include obtaining, cleaning, and analyzing quantitative datasets or coding and analyzing qualitative data.Assist with written reports and presentations summarizing findings and provide informed suggestions to drive data driven practices within the Office.

    Knowledge and Skills Required:

    Interest in workforce and education topicsExposure to or training in at least one analytical tool or programming language, including Microsoft Excel, Python, Tableau, and/or SQLAbility to think analyticallyStrong written and verbal communication skills

    Qualifications Preferred:
