    Help Build the Future of Adult Education in Vermont

    Vermont Adult Learning (VAL) is seeking a Finance and Administration Manager to help strengthen the financial and operational systems that support our statewide mission.

    This is an exciting opportunity for someone who enjoys combining financial analysis, organizational operations, and problem-solving in a mission-driven environment. Working closely with the Executive Director and our outsourced accounting partner, Charity CFO, you will play a key role in ensuring our organization operates efficiently while supporting more than 1,500 adult learners across Vermont each year.

    What You'll Do

    As the Finance and Administration Manager, you will:

    Oversee day-to-day financial and administrative operations

    Coordinate purchasing, vendor management, invoicing, and billing processes

    Monitor organizational budgets and prepare budget-to-actual analyses

    Support grant budgeting, financial reporting, and compliance with state and federal funding requirements

    Coordinate leases, insurance, and facility-related administrative functions

    Develop financial dashboards, reports, and operational metrics for leadership

    Partner with Charity CFO to ensure accurate financial records and reporting

    Prepare financial information for leadership, board committees, and audits

    Identify opportunities to improve financial processes and organizational efficiency

    What We're Looking For

    We're looking for someone who brings:

    Three to five years of experience in finance, accounting, business administration, or operations management

    Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills

    Experience managing budgets, purchasing, accounts payable, invoicing, or financial reporting

    Experience with nonprofit organizations, government funding, or grants is preferred

    Strong Microsoft Excel and financial systems skills

    Ability to communicate financial information clearly to both financial and non-financial staff

    A collaborative, service-oriented approach and commitment to continuous improvement

    A bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field is preferred.

    Reports To: Addison County Regional Director

    Primary Work Site: Middlebury Learning Center - one day per week remote.


    Vermont Adult Learning: Vermont Adult Learning (VAL) is a private nonprofit and a member of Vermont’s Adult Education and Literacy System. Working closely with other nonprofits, state agencies, and schools, we serve seven of Vermont’s 14 counties. We provide instruction in basic academic skills, work readiness, and English language skills; high school completion and GED prep; and transition to college and career services. Our programs are free to Vermont residents, age 16 and older who want to obtain a high school diploma or the equivalent skills, or who want to learn English.


    Purpose of the Job:

    The Center Coordinator acts on behalf of the Regional Director in their absence from the Center. In this capacity, the Coordinator leads the Center staff to maintain the continuity of high-quality programs and services for adult learners, facilitates staff communication and deployment of resources, and makes decisions impacting Center performance.

    In addition, the Center Coordinator provides outreach, recruitment, assessment, and goal setting for new and returning students, and supports them in demonstrating readiness for VAL services. The Coordinator serves as the initial point of contact for new students, listens to and develops a relationship with the student to understand their educational needs and objectives, and provides enrollment and onboarding services. Coordinators administer a variety of assessments to support students on their educational journey with VAL and beyond. They develop and maintain community partnerships as part of a fabric of coordinated services and referral networks and support students in accessing programs and services to meet their needs and goals.


    The Center Coordinator works closely with the Regional Director and collaboratively with advisors and teachers in the Regional Learning Center and the greater VAL community.


    Essential Functions + Responsibilities:

    Center Coordination

    Work closely with the Regional Director to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the center, making decisions as needed to maintain effective operations in the Regional Director’s absence.

    Conduct staff meetings, as needed.

    Assist Regional Director with training new staff.

    Assist in planning and setting up for graduation.

    Maintain calendar and room schedule for center.

    Work with VAL Administrative Support personnel to order and approve the purchase of supplies for students and the center, as needed.

    Student Support

    Develop a culture of student engagement and student-centered learning.

    Run student review meetings in order to collaborate with instructors and advisor to problem -solve student barriers and challenges.

    Refer students to other organizations + agencies as appropriate.

    Reach out to students as necessary to support retention.

    Plan and create opportunities for student engagement.

    Advise GED Students

    Works with students to develop an Adult Learning Plan (ALP) that addresses the needs + interests of the student.

    Monitors and facilitates the students’ progress along their ALPs.

    Works closely with VAL instructional team to ensure classes, tutoring, and other instruction meet the needs and goals of the students.

    Enrollment and onboarding support

    Explain VAL programs and offerings clearly to prospective students.

    Guide students through enrollment, intake , and onboarding process.

    Interview new students to determine their educational goals and objectives.

    Administer assessments to new students to determine baseline educational achievement.

    Maintenance of student data and records

    Collect and enter all student data into Student Information System (SIS) and ensures student records are complete, accurate, and maintained regularly.

    Run pertinent reports in student database to support operations.

    Participate in Data Specialist training and all required data-related professional development offered by VAL and the VT AOE.

    Maintain students’ educational files according to legal requirements and best practices.

    Outreach and recruitment support

    Work with the Regional Director to develop new and manage existing relationships with partner organizations.

    Attend meetings for organizations to connect about services available in the community.

    Assist with the development and implementation of outreach strategies.

    Work with the Director of Development and Communication to create advertising materials and distribute to community partners and post in the community.

    Attend occasional tabling opportunities at community events.

    General

    Provide basic, frontline customer service by responding to inquiries about VAL programs.

    Maintain professional standards of confidentiality.

    Participate in personal + professional development.

    Other duties as assigned.


    Qualifications, Knowledge + Skills:

    Bachelor's degree plus three years experience or similar combination of education and experience preferred. Experience preferred with at-promise students, alternative educational systems, and adult educational practice. Must possess strong interpersonal, oral, and written English communication skills to engage + listen to students. Requires competency in using office computer applications and databases to perform various administrative and communication tasks. Requires a creative thinker who is knowledgeable of and able to coordinate available community resources. Also requires the ability to work well independently and as part of a team. Strong organizational skills are necessary to complete administrative tasks. This position requires a commitment to racial equity, as well as other forms of educational equity around class, ability, language, gender and sexuality. Candidates should be excited to work with diverse students, especially students of color, English Language Learners, and LGBTQIA+ students.


    Working Conditions + Environment:

    This position requires in-person services at the Middlebury Learning Center, meeting with students in the community, and the ability to work remotely effectively and professionally. Occasional evening or weekend hours may also be required. Requires internet connectivity conducive to video conferencing; a valid driver's license, reliable personal transportation and/or access to public transportation. Mileage will be reimbursed.


    Physical Demands:

    This position requires the ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, reach, and use a computer for extended periods of time. The role may require moving between classrooms, offices, and community locations, as well as occasional lifting and carrying of materials weighing up to 20 pounds. The employee must be able to communicate effectively in person, by phone, and through virtual platforms.     Purpose of the Job:

    The Adult Basic Education (ABE) Math/Science Instructor teaches adult learners who want to enhance their foundational and high school-level academic skills in mathematics, science, health literacy, personal finance, digital literacy, and critical thinking. The ABE Instructor develops and instructs proficiency-based courses across various content areas to support students in achieving their goals, which may include improving math literacy, obtaining a high school diploma or equivalency, preparing for the workforce, or transitioning to postsecondary education. The instruction is centered on the needs and goals of learners, is culturally responsive, and aligns with state and federal adult education standards.

    There may be opportunities to work additional hours remotely or in the evenings. To ensure quality services, VAL uses a weighted system to balance time for instruction, documentation, planning, meetings/committee work, and professional development.

    Essential Functions + Responsibilities:

    Provides high-quality individual and small group instruction, remotely and in-person, to VAL students.

    Provides consistent learner-centered instruction in foundational and high school-level skills to support Vermont’s Adult Diploma Program, as well as GED prep and work readiness.

    Teaches applied, academic, and interpersonal skills to adults.

    Develops effective proficiency-based units and lessons and instructional materials.

    Effectively teaches students with varied educational skills, backgrounds, and ages.

    Completes required paperwork, other documentation, and data entry in a timely and accurate manner.

    Addresses individualized educational needs in group instructional settings.

    Focuses efforts and attention on achieving program goals and objectives.

    Participates in statewide and organizational-level professional development.

    Maintains professional standards of confidentiality.

    Collaborates effectively with other teachers and staff in helping students realize their goals.

    Qualifications, Knowledge + Skills:

    A bachelor’s degree is required. Emphasis on education plus relevant teaching experience is preferred.

    Teaching license preferred, but not required.

    Experience designing units and lessons to meet established standards.

    Experience with at-risk students and involvement with alternative educational systems preferred.

    Demonstrated experience successfully supporting diverse students, including BIPOC students, English Language Learners, LGBTQIA+ students, and those experiencing the effects of poverty, homelessness, and single parenthood.

    Experience teaching students with learning differences and other significant barriers to mainstream educational programs.

    Willingness to teach project-based and problem-based classes and workshops.

    Strong technology skills and the ability to leverage these skills to enhance student learning.

    Able to utilize distance learning strategies related to videoconferences, collaborative projects, and accessing remote resources.

    Must possess strong interpersonal, oral, and written English communication skills.
