    Role Overview

    The SMS Mission Engineer II will support the external success of SRM products that leave the Ursa Major campus (or other sub campuses). As a Mission Engineer, you will be planning and executing flight campaigns, motor qualification campaigns, offsite energetic material testing, motor integration, verification, and validation (IV&V). To support these missions, you will interface with various external industry partners, conducting hot fire motor/engine tests, participate in data reviews, support troubleshooting efforts related to motor/engine tests, drive rocket motor/engine test campaign success, and interface with all relevant internal disciplines to bring those expertise into the field all while advocating and protecting the Ursa Major brand and reputation when conducting operations in the field.

    Key Responsibilities

    Serve as point of contact between Ursa Major and customer program manager/flight test lead Shape test objectives, oversee execution, interpret results, comply with test range requirements and communicate clear technical insights to customers Ensure execution of and compliance with test plans, qualification requirements and hardware work instructions developed by Ursa Major and customers while complying with external test range SOPs Generate and track program mission objectives/milestones and assist in the technical validation of program milestones and adherence of those objectives throughout the program lifecycle Support complex motor/engine operations, including test stand readiness, system checkouts, instrumentation troubleshooting, and field diagnostics Generate internal qualification test plans/procedures that follow the program qualification plan and comply with systems engineering to satisfy product requirements Obtain and provide data to SRM safety team for the generation of hazardous shipping documentation of SRM products (i.e.: IHC, FHC, EX) and facilitate the submission process Operate and modify launcher platform systems and understand how systems interact with ignition chain of motor/engine Support and assist the energetics team in the handling, planning, and execution of testing both on and offsite in support of energetic material classification testing Other duties as assigned

    Required Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field 1-3 years of mission operations, test engineer, or other relevant experience Ability to earn trust, build rapport and maintain positive and professional relationships with cross-functional stakeholders and customers Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work in a fast-paced development environment Working knowledge of and hands-on experience with electrical, fluid, and mechanical systems Willing to spend up to 50% of the year on travel for multi-week test and flight campaigns

    Desired Experience

    Master's degree in a relevant technical discipline Experience interfacing with DoD programs and partners Experience with hazardous operations and system safety Experience with qualification efforts on aerospace systems or DoD platforms SRM or other propulsion system design, development, or test Technical expertise in liquid and/or solid rocket motor/engine manufacturing, integration, or test Ability to be eligible and maintain eligibility for a Secret Clearance

    Ursa Major is developing cutting-edge propulsion systems and is seeking an innovative and hands-on Senior Development Energetics Manufacturing Engineer. This role is pivotal in bridging the gap between design and production by creating, implementing, and optimizing the manufacturing processes for solid rocket motors (SRMs). The engineer in this role will be the designated Process Owner for a critical section of the SRM build process. They will be responsible for the entire development lifecycle of their assigned processes, from initial concept and sourcing to machine design, fabrication, and final deployment on the production floor. This individual will serve as the primary Subject Matter Expert (SME) for their processes, actively participating in motor builds to ensure processes are robust, repeatable, and capable.

    We are looking for an engineer with a strong background in capital equipment, automation, and process design, ideally with experience in energetics processing.

    Key Responsibilities

    Process Ownership & Development:Take complete ownership of a designated manufacturing process (e.g., propellant mixing, propellant curing, final assembly of SRM).Design, develop, and validate new manufacturing processes and equipment to meet design specifications, safety standards, and production rate requirements.Create detailed equipment specifications, statements of work (SOW), and test plans for new machinery.Sourcing & Machine Design:Lead the sourcing and procurement of complex capital equipment. This includes identifying and evaluating external machine builders and automation suppliers.Lead internal design efforts and manage external vendors for custom manufacturing machines, tooling, and fixtures.Manage projects from procurement through installation, conducting site acceptance (SAT) and factory acceptance (FAT) testing.Hands-on Implementation & SME Support:Act as the lead Subject Matter Expert (SME) for your assigned processes.Work hands-on with technicians and other engineers on the production floor to build development and flight hardware, providing real-time support and process refinement.Develop and qualify processes, establishing critical process parameters and controls.Author and maintain comprehensive documentation, including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), work instructions, and maintenance requirements.Continuous Improvement:Lead analysis of build data, non-conformances, and operator feedback to identify root causes and implement robust corrective actions.Drive continuous improvement (Lean, 6-Sigma) initiatives to improve safety, quality, efficiency, and cost for your process area.Collaborate closely with Design Engineering (DFM/A) to ensure new motor designs are optimized for manufacturability.

    Required Qualifications

    Education: Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.Experience:Minimum of 6 years of experience in a manufacturing engineering role, developing and deploying new production processes and equipment.Proven experience leading capital equipment projects, including specification development, sourcing, and installation/commissioning.Demonstrated ability to serve as a hands-on SME, working directly on the production floor.Willingness to work hands-on in a production environment with strict safety controls.Skills:Strong proficiency in 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Siemens NX, CATIA) for tooling and fixture design.Excellent project management skills.Strong understanding of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) and blueprint interpretation.Ability to rapidly learn and become the subject matter expert in a new process area.

    Desired Qualifications

    Industry Experience: Previous experience in the aerospace, defense, or energetics industry, specifically with solid rocket motor manufacturing (insulation, propellant, case winding, etc.).Familiarity with relevant codes and regulations (e.g., OSHA, NFPA, ATF, DoD or aerospace standards).Experience with Statistical Process Control (SPC), Design of Experiments (DOE), and process capability analysis.Background in process scale-up, equipment commissioning, or technology transfer from R&D to production.Experience with ERP/MES systems and digital work instructions/batch records.Lean manufacturing or Six Sigma experience/certification.

    Ursa Major is developing cutting‑edge propulsion systems and is seeking an innovative and hands‑on a Senior Manufacturing Engineer. The Engineer in this role will assume technical and operational ownership of manufacturing processes for solid rocket motors, with a primary focus on Ammonium Perchlorate (AP) milling and related powder-handling operations. This role will lead the design, development, qualification, and continuous improvement of AP milling processes that feed directly into propellant manufacturing.

This is a hands-on position with significant responsibility for day‑to‑day plant operations, process capability, and long‑term process development.

    Key Responsibilities

    Process Ownership & Development

    Serve as the Process Owner for AP milling and associated powder-handling operationsLead hands-on troubleshooting alongside technicians and engineers on the production floor to resolve complex manufacturing issues, stabilize, and improve processes.Develop, maintain, and enforce process documentation, including:Manufacturing Process Specifications (MPS)Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)Work InstructionsDefine and maintain Critical Process Parameters for AP milling (e.g., particle size distribution, moisture content, bulk density, contamination levels, flowability).Own process change control:Initiate, justify, and implement process changes via formal ECN mechanisms.Perform risk assessments (FMEA, HAZOP) for proposed changes.Plan and manage validation and requalification activities following changes.Lead continuous improvement initiatives using Lean, Six Sigma to support:New propellant formulations and motor programsScale‑up from development to production volumesReductions in cycle time, scrap, and variabilitySpecify and optimize milling equipment and conditions:Mill type selection (e.g., jet mills, ball mills, pin mills, hammer mills)Operating parameters (feed rates, rotor speeds, classifier settings, media selection, temperature control)Design, develop, and validate new manufacturing processes and equipment to meet design specifications, safety standards, and production rate requirements for AP milling.Provide technical guidance and mentorship to manufacturing engineers and technicians, promoting best practices in process control, problem solving, and operational excellence.

    Safety, Environmental & Regulatory Compliance

    Lead in establishing and maintaining process safety for energetic and oxidizer handling, with a focus on fine powder hazards.Perform and update Process Hazard Analyses (PHA), HAZOPs, and Job Safety Analyses (JSAs) for AP milling and related processes.Define safe operating envelopes for AP milling (e.g., temperature limits, inert atmosphere requirements, static control, equipment interlocks).Ensure compliance with relevant military/industry standards and regulations for energetic materials, oxidizers, and combustible dusts (e.g., applicable NFPA and OSHA requirements).Support incident/near‑miss investigations and implement corrective and preventive actionsOther duties as assigned

    Required Qualifications

    Education

    Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.

    Experience

    Minimum of 6years in a manufacturing or process engineering role, developing and deploying new production processes and equipment.Proven hands-on experience with powder or particulate material processing in a production environment, such as:Milling, grinding, jet milling, micronization, classification, sieving, blending, or spray drying.Demonstrated process ownership in a production environment:Defined, controlled, and improved processes at scale.Implemented and controlled changes via formal documentation and change-control systems.Experience in at least one of the following:Solid rocket motor or energetics manufacturing (propellant mixing, casting, curing, machining, powder handling); orChemical, pharmaceutical, battery materials, metal powder, or other materials processing involving strict safety, quality, and regulatory controls.

    Skills

    Strong understanding of:Particle technology: particle size distribution, morphology, flow behavior, segregation, packing, bulk density.Milling and classification operations: mill selection, operating principles, scale‑up considerations.Process safety for combustible dusts, oxidizers, and/or energetic materials: dust explosion hazards, static control, inerting, ventilation.Proficiency with:Root cause analysis methodologies (5‑Whys, Fishbone, FMEA).Basic statistical tools for process analysis (e.g., SPC, capability analysis), using software such as Minitab, JMP, or equivalent.Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to generate clear work instructions and to train technicians and operators.Strong proficiency in 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Siemens NX, CATIA) for tooling, fixtures, and simple equipment design.Excellent project management skills: able to scope, plan, and execute development and qualification activities with clear milestones and deliverables.

    Desired Qualifications

    Education: Master of Science (M.S.) in a relevant engineering discipline.Direct experience in solid rocket motor manufacturing, specifically one or more of:Powder handling and conveyance systems for oxidizers or energetic materials.Milling and particle size reduction (e.g., jet mills, ball mills, pin mills) for oxidizers or fine powders.Previous experience in the aerospace, defense, or energetics industry, particularly with solid rocket motor manufacturing (insulation, propellant, case winding, or similar processes).Hands-on experience with:Dust collection and explosion protection systems (e.g., NFPA‑compliant systems, explosion vents, suppression systems, explosion isolation devices).Familiarity with:Relevant NFPA standards for combustible dusts and oxidizers.AS9100, ISO 9001, or other quality management systems in a highly regulated industry.Lean / Six Sigma methodologies (Green Belt or above preferred).

    This role is ideal for an experienced process, fabrication, or GSE technician with a strong foundation in industrial maintenance, mechanical systems, and infrastructure buildout — who also plays a direct, high-impact role in test execution.     Key Responsibilities

    Test Infrastructure Build & Industrial Maintenance

    Lead the build-out, modification, and maintenance of test stands, fluid panels, control systems, mechanical fixtures, and facility utilities. Set the tone for cleanliness, organization, and readiness standards of tools, workshops, and test stands to ensure safe and efficient operations Fabricate or modify mechanical hardware, fixtures, and tooling to support test activities Operate hand tools, power tools, lifts, and other heavy equipment including (lifts, mills, welders, forklifts) etc. to assemble or disassemble test infrastructure Perform regular maintenance, calibration, and repair of support equipment, sensors, plumbing, and tooling; troubleshoot faults that impact test readiness Support facility upgrades and layout planning alongside engineering and test operations
