Minimum Qualifications:

The Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology, within the School of Medicine is pleased to announce openings for a Physician Assistant Specialty Care to join their expanding team. These APPs primary focus will be care management of Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) patients in a blend of inpatient and outpatient services.

Roles and responsibilities:
Perform patient triage and care planning for acute symptom management related to oncologic treatment.
Provide information to patients and families related to symptom management and psychosocial responses to the diagnosis of cancer and related treatments.
Perform professional, clinical and technical competencies required in Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) practice settings within the Bone Marrow Transplant Cellular Therapy (BMTCT) Program.
Evaluate medical problems of patients in the Bone Marrow Transplant Cellular Therapy (BMTCT) practice settings and appropriately requests consultation of other specialties when indicated.
Lead family centered multidisciplinary rounds, provide bedside care, and manage admissions and discharges to/from the inpatient BMT unit.
Work as part of a multidisciplinary team including an Attending Hematologist or Oncologist to provide care for current and new inpatients on the acute care floor and outpatient clinic setting.
Share coverage responsibilities between in and outpatient services providing continuity of care for patients and families as they transition from the floor to the outpatient BMT clinic.
Perform procedures, such as but not limited to: lumbar punctures with instillation of intrathecal chemotherapy and bone marrow aspirates and biopsies.
Monitor patient condition, laboratory values, and results of diagnostic procedures. Maintain records, write orders, and progress notes in patient charts as to status, treatments, and procedures.
Follow University policies, evidence-based practice/SOPs/FACT requirements as well as state and federal regulations.
ShiftVariable shifts; 40 hours per week
Minimum QualificationsPhysicians Assistant (PA) licensure by the Missouri State Board of Registration for the Healing Arts.
Preferred Qualifications Specialty certificate by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) in Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, Emergency Medicine, Hospital Medicine, Nephrology, Orthopaedic Surgery, Pediatrics, or Psychiatry.
Additional license/certification requirements as determined by the hiring department.

This position will provide medical care at the Digestive Health Clinics, with a focus on patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Duties include but are not limited to:
-Independently provide professional medical support for Gastroenterology patient care.
-Collaborate with physicians and hospital staff to promote team-based patient care.
-Coordinate care for patients with IBD
-Assist with screening patient conditions and needs.
-Educate patients on health maintenance and disease prevention.
-Act as a resource for patients, families, nursing staff and other health care professionals in area of expertise.
-Set treatment plans and prescribe appropriate actions to meet the plans within the established protocols, such as:
-Ensure adherence to immunosuppressive medication
-Improve follow up on adjusting therapy ordered by IBD providers
-Allow better monitoring of drug levels and health maintenance specifically related to immunosuppressed IBD patients

The position contributes directly to both patient care and research by supporting the integrity of biospecimens used in clinical trials, legal cases, and research studies.
Key Responsibilities:
• Track and maintain custody of clinical samples for clinical trials and legal cases, ensuring compliance with the Department of Pathology's requirement to retain paraffin-embedded tissues for 10 years.
• Assist with the check-in and check-out of customer samples, perform accurate data entry, and maintain a secure chain of custody.
• Support legal requests by preparing slides, images, or tissue samples for patients and legal teams.
• Assist with Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) compliance, including the proper labeling and disposal of histology chemicals and solvents.
• Wash laboratory glassware and maintain clean workspaces to support efficient operations.
• Free up histotechnologists to focus on specialized work by providing hands-on support with routine technical tasks.
• Process blood samples when collections staff are processing tissue samples, ensuring timely handling so samples remain viable.
• Support biospecimen collection and processing shortly after removal to preserve scientific value.
• Help ensure patient eligibility for clinical trials through accurate tissue and blood sample preparation, as well as assisting with rare sample collection for research purposes.
• Provide backup coverage when full-time staff members are absent, contributing to consistent workflow and operations.
• Maintain accurate documentation and adhere to established laboratory and institutional protocols.
Work Environment:
This temporary position is based in the Biorepository within the Office of Medical Research. The role requires adherence to safety standards and handling of sensitive materials in a regulated laboratory environment.
The typical hours are between 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM; however, the schedule may vary as this is a part-time position.
Preferred Qualifications Qualifications:
• Prior laboratory or technical support experience preferred, but not required.
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
• Ability to follow strict protocols and compliance procedures.
• Familiarity with handling biospecimens and/or knowledge of clinical trial processes is a plus.
