    Job Description:

    The position is for a highly motivated and technically proficient Senior Structures Project Engineer to lead and execute complex bridge design projects, primarily within California. The ideal candidate will have deep, specialized experience in the design of roadway and railroad bridges, exceptional knowledge of Caltrans design standards, and a proven track record of successful project delivery from planning through final design.

    This role requires a proactive and self-motivated professional capable of managing project budgets, mentoring junior staff, and serving as a technical resource for our Structures group.

    Primary Job Duties:

    Technical Leadership & DesignServe as Engineer-of-Record and technical lead for all phases of transportation structure projects, with a focus on roadway, highway, and railroad bridge design (e.g., box girders, pre-stressed concrete, steel plate girders, seismic retrofit).Perform, check, and seal advanced structural design calculations, quantities, and cost estimates in full compliance with Caltrans Bridge Design Specifications (BDS), Seismic Design Criteria (SDC), and other relevant Caltrans manuals and standards.Lead the preparation and documentation of Bridge Selection Reports (BSRs), Type Selection, and Type Approval documents, including the analysis of alternative bridge types, feasibility, and cost-benefit assessments for different clients.Develop final plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E) packages, ensuring quality assurance and adherence to all client and regulatory requirements.Oversee the structural detailing and plan production using specialized software (MicroStation/AutoCAD).Project and Client Management:Manage project budgets, scopes, and schedules for structures tasks, ensuring deliverables are met on time and within budget.Interface directly with Caltrans personnel, regional agencies (MPOs/Cities/Counties), rail transportation agencies (UPRR, BNSF, Metro, CA HSR) and multidisciplinary teams to coordinate design efforts and resolve technical issues.Prepare fee proposals for structural engineering design and construction observation work, contributing to the firm’s business development efforts.Conduct field assessments, site visits, and inspection of existing and new structures/facilities as necessary, particularly for scoping and preliminary design phases.Mentor and provide technical guidance to entry-level and intermediate engineering staff, fostering continuous professional development within the Structures group.


    Job Qualifications (Education, Experience, and Skills):

    Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or equivalentMaster’s degree in structural engineering preferredMust have a minimum experience of ten (10) years in bridge designDemonstrate in-depth knowledge of Caltrans policies, procedures, standard plans, and design manuals (BDS, SDC, etc.).Proven experience in successfully completing key project phases, including the preparation of Bridge Selection Reports (BSRs) and Type Selection.Experience with different bridge substructure and superstructure types common in California.Required P.E. certification in Civil Engineering (CA), certification in additional states is a plus.S.E. certification in California is a plus.Eligibility for PE registration in adjacent southwestern states (AZ, NV) is a plus.Experience in DOT and municipality in all facets of engineering for CA.     Job Description:

    Assisting senior design personnel in developing and completing designs and contract documents. Design municipal and state projects for streets/highways/freeways involving roadway, drainage, utilities, and traffic engineering. Ability to function as a project engineer and understand all aspects of design and plan production. Preparation and checking of design calculations, quantities, cost estimates, and project plans.
