SUMMARY
The Principal is employed by the Board of Directors to serve as the primary religious and educational leader of the school. As the spiritual leader, the Principal is expected to nurture the faith development of students by providing opportunities for spiritual growth. As the educational leader, the principal is responsible for the development and implementation of the curriculum, promoting academic excellence by students, hiring and supervising members of the faculty and staff, and providing for the ongoing professional development of the faculty and staff. As the school’s religious leader and educational leader, the Principal plays a leadership role in representing the school to parents and prospective parents, to Catholic institutions and authorities, to school districts, to state and local government agencies, and to the community in general.
The Principal has the authority and responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the school. The Principal implements the policies and directives of the Board of Directors, attends meetings of the Board as requested, and is directly supervised by the President of the Board.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Curriculum and Instruction
recruit qualified candidates for faculty positionssupervise and at least annually evaluate members of the faculty and staff develop and implement a schedule of regular professional staff development to maintain and increase pedagogical and subject-area competenciesconsult with and advise individual members of the faculty regarding instructional practices, classroom management, school procedures and parent and student relationsprovides collaborative leadership in the development and implementation of a curriculum that promotes academic excellence in accordance with state curricular standards and consistent with Catholic teaching and traditionschedules and classes and services
Spiritual Life
ensure that school ministry activities occur regularly, including liturgical celebrations and observance of feast dayscollaborate with leaders in local parishes regarding liturgies, preparation for the sacraments, religious education and service opportunitiesmaintain a safe and welcoming school environment conducive to study, prayer and service
Students
provide opportunities and maintain expectations for student participation in activities in service to church and community, co-and extracurricular activities, and leadership within the school community generally establish and maintain clear expectations regarding student behavior, consistent with the student handbook and the student code of conduct maintain and administer student records, including academic records, health records, and behavior recordsprovide programs and services to support students in their post-secondary aspirations, including college admissions
Community Relations
coordinate student recruitment efforts and communication with parents of prospective studentscoordinate public relations activities and public appearances on behalf of the school, draft and/or approve press releases issued by the school, and serve as spokesperson for the schoolcommunicate on a frequent and regular basis with parents regarding school matters communicate with local school districts and with the New York State Education Department regarding matters of shared concern, including student transportation, services for students with disabilities, statewide testing, athletics and co- and extracurricular activities communicate with state and local health authorities, as needed, regarding public health matters affecting the school communitymaintain a visible presence in all aspects of the school
General Administration
Human Resources
recruit qualified candidates for non-instructional staff positionsmaintain a record of applications for employment, written documentation of reference-checks, and documentation of hiring decisionsmaintain a personnel file for each individual employee which shall include copies of letters of offer of employment, evaluations and other supervisory documents, and correspondence regarding employment matterssupervise and at least annually evaluates members of the non-instructional staff, maintaining a record of such evaluation in the individual employees’ respective personnel filesadvise the President of the Board of Directors of concerns regarding employee performance
Finances
in collaboration with the Treasurer of the Board of Directors, prepare the annual budget for consideration by the Board of Directorsmanage the annual budget and serve as a responsible steward of the school’s resourcesprovide visible leadership within the school community in support of the school’s fundraising and enrollment efforts
Facilities
oversee the use of school facilitiesadvise the Board of Directors regarding the safety, use and maintenance needs of school facilities
Board Relations
report directly to the President of the Board of Directors and communicates in a timely manner with the President as appropriateprovide written reports to the Board of Directors prior to meetings of the Boardattend meetings of the Board of Directors, and provide updates regarding communication to and relations with state and local government agencies, local school districts, the Diocese of Rochester and other Catholic institutionsimplement policies and decisions of the Board of Directors within the school community and represent those policies and decisions in the larger community as necessary
QUALIFICATIONS
To successfully perform the duties of the Principal, one must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The responsibilities listed above are representative of the knowledge and ability required by the position. The Principal must be a practicing Roman Catholic with an ongoing commitment to formation in catechetical and spiritual leadership development.
