    Principal Planner: Residential & Commercial Development

    The Town of Westerly is looking to fill the position of Principal Planner: Residential & Commercial Development. Under the general direction of the Town Planner, the Principal Planner: Residential and Commercial Development is responsible for performing a variety of administrative functions in the Planning Office, assisting in short and long-term municipal planning activities, housing initiatives, supporting the Town Planner and various Boards and Commissions, and taking an active role in various initiatives undertaken by the Planning, Zoning and Building Offices. This Principal Planner position requires continued professional advancement in all aspects of Planning and Zoning.

    Position Overview:

    Provide staff assistance and technical support to the Planning Board and Town Planner by reviewing development plans and subdivision applications, processing applications, coordinating reviews with other departments, and conducting periodic site inspections to ensure compliance with approved subdivision and development plans.

    Attend Planning Board public meetings, Housing Committee, and Architectural Review Board public meetings as assigned.

    Assist in preparing meeting agendas, mailings, administrative, analytical, and written reports as assigned.

    Meet with and respond to the inquiries of the general public on planning, zoning, and related matters.

    Work on routine planning and zoning issues and will collaborate on planning policy amendments to the zoning ordinance, development regulations or comprehensive plan in response to a variety of complex planning and land-use issues.

    Participate in community engagement activities related to the development of housing and commercial properties as approved by the Town Planner.

    Technical support includes updating the Planning Office website, GIS mapping, preparing public presentations, scheduling/coordinating meetings.

    Perform other duties as assigned generally in support of land use and development, resiliency, conservation, environmental protection, and economic development activities.

    May be assigned special projects or research in advancement of long-range planning and policy development.

    Qualifications & Experience:

    Bachelor's Degree in Government, Community Planning, Public Administration, Urban Studies, Environmental Science or related field preferred.

    Minimum of two (2) years of experience in planning and zoning, community or land use development.

    Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to successfully perform the essential job functions of this position.

    Licenses and Certifications:

    A valid driver's license.

    Professional certifications such as Certification by the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP)

    Salary ranges from $65,000 - $75,000 a year
