Purpose of the Position
The Technician Level I is responsible for the assembly and alignment of fiber and free-space laser systems in both manufacturing and R&D environments. Core responsibilities include electrical, mechanical, and optical fiber assembly; generating production test data; managing shipping and receiving; preparing products for shipment; and maintaining accurate records within the ERP system. Responsible for set-up and operation of CNC machines in compliance with inch and metric drawing specifications. Responsible for the proper use and maintenance of all measuring tools and devices used in inspection of all components. Works under general supervision. Although the location of the position is in Newton, NJ, from time to time it may be required to undertake duties at other Thorlabs locations.
The hours for this position are 5:45am - 2:15pm Monday - Friday. This position is eligible for a $5,000sign on bonus.
Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:
Performs set ups on various CNC Production Equipment such as milling, turning or similar operations.Machines and/or fabricating precision tools and fixturing to tight tolerances and complex geometries based on specifications.Solid understanding of mechanical design and dimensioning principles which includes reading blueprints and geometric tolerances comprehension.Demonstrates a high level of knowledge in programming and overall machine operation.Understands material properties (rates of expansion, strength, hardness) and special machining requirements.Measures, inspects and troubleshoots dimensions of finished work pieces to ensure conformance to specifications.Completes routine and priority tasks defined by management to ensure on time deliveries.Performs periodic machine maintenance such as but not limited to dismantling or partly dismantling machines and performing repairs that mainly involve the use of hand tools in scraping and fitting parts.Comply with safety regulations and maintains a clean and orderly workspaceIn addition to the essential functions and duties listed above, all positions are also responsible for:
Meeting company standards pertaining to quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis, performing all work related tasks in a manner that is in compliance with all Company policies and procedures.Adhering to Company policies, procedures, and directives regarding standards of workplace behavior in completing job duties and assignments.The Company retains the right to change or assign other duties to this position.
Physical Activities:
Work may be active, could stand or sit for long durations and/or perform repetitious work at times. The employee may lift or move objects up to 20 pounds. Employees must grasp, manipulate, or assemble parts and components that are often very small. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, however, may be noisy at times. Must be able to wear appropriate clothing and personal protective equipment such as but not limited to masks, glasses, gloves, and specialty garments. The required PPE and training allow for the safe handling and processing of chemicals like adhesives, lubricants and solvents, and safe operation of job-related equipment and tools

Experience:
3-5 years of experience in a similar position preferredEducation:
High School Diploma or equivalent or equivalent work experienceCNC certification or CNC Trade School, a major plusSpecialized Knowledge and Skills:
Experience with Haas and Fanuc controls.Understanding of Virtual Gibbs and manual programming (G codes/M codes).Familiar with the operation of DNC systems.Setup Time Reduction a plusPrototyping experience a plusStrong sense of ownership and work ethic, written and verbal communication skillsCommunication skillsStrong ability to work well in a group atmosphere, and comply with high quality standards.Knowledge of Lean Principles including “Just in Time”, and Setup Time Reduction a plusPay range for this position is $29.00 - $36.00 depending on experience
