    Position Overview

    This task works in the NOAA Galveston Deep Sea Coral Laboratory to facilitate operations of the coral culture facility and the marine organisms under the guidance of the Program manager and other assigned aquaculture staff. Leads or is heavily involved in laboratory studies of diseases and other deleterious agents affecting corals, advancements in restoration and/or husbandry best practices. General duties are to ensure continuity of laboratory operations.     Key Responsibilities

    a) Laboratory and Fieldwork-Support Duties

    Tasks shall include but is not limited to:

    Ensure coordination of staffing and maintaining inventories of supplies and equipment.Maintain recirculating culture systems within the coral culture facility, conduct safety inspections, monitor water quality, and report malfunctions in facility operations to the Program/Task Order Manager.Conduct routine care of live coral specimens under optimum conditions for health/growth including tank setup and cleaning for ESA coral species.     b) Data Management Support

    Tasks shall include but is not limited to:

    Write standard operating procedures and manuals for the husbandry of cold-water corals.Computer data entry of water quality and coral health.QA/QC data input and respond to data requests.Managing tracking sheets and project management tools as needed.

    c) Analytical Support

    Basic duties include data preparation and validation prior to analysis, drafting reports and manuscripts, and review. Advanced duties involve working with Program Leads on analyses to advance coral husbandry and restoration. Tasks shall include but is not limited to:

    Parentage, regional, and health analysis for ensuring biosecurity protocols are adhered.Collect and archive journal articles, research papers, etc., on coral biology, culture and husbandry.Imagery (photo, video, or acoustic) analysis to determine coral growth, size, and physiological structures.Prepare and/or lead manuscripts including data analysis, produce graphs and graphics, and presentations for communicating the results of research and data collection.

    d) Outreach and Education

    The Contractor shall participate in Outreach and education as follows by answering telephones, provide information to the public, help develop and maintain educational materials, and perform as a participant at outreach and educational events such as open-houses, career fairs, teacher education workshops, etc. Additionally, the contractor shall lead tours if schedule and workload allows.

    Minimum Qualifications (Required)

    Master's degree in marine sciences or related biology fields with at least 3 years of experience related to maintaining coral culture systems or 5 years experience maintaining coral culture systems.     Position Overview

    SEFSC-PEMD personnel are critical collaborators in restoration work in response to the 2010 DWH oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. This aspect of the project involves surveying mesophotic and deep benthic reef communities (50 - 1800 m in depth). The survey utilizes a variety of survey platforms (e.g. ROV, AUV) to detect, classify and enumerate assemblages of corals, sponges, octocorals, crustaceans, mollusks, fishes and other fauna. Tasks should include: Survey Watch Stander for Mesophotic Deep Benthic Communities (MDBC) surveys conducted on NOAA Ships and Small Research Vessels and participate on other PEMD resource surveys, as requested.

    Key Responsibilities

    a) Survey Duties

    Tasks shall include but is not limited to:

Collected video data is annotated using a semi-automated multi-stage process including 1) automated processing using C-Vision tools, 2) human-in-the-loop review and correction, 3) data review and QA/QC, 4) data output/ingest into GCRF Oracle databases, 4) updating GitHUB data for updates and project management.

    Subject matter expert for identifying marine fishes in all life stages from mesophotic and deep reef habitats of the Gulf of America.Video annotation, review, and data QA/QC of ROV-based footage.Management of review and tracking sheets.Updating project management tools for status updates.Updating annotation tracking sheets.

    c) Data Management Support

    Video Annotation duties involve basic duties including data entry, QA/QC, and validation. In the near future these will also include determining and setting standards for automated data outputs to ensure interoperability and democratization of datasets.

    Utilize inventory of existing bathymetric information in U.S. EEZ of Gulf of Mexico between 50 and 1800 m into MDBC database.     Position Overview

    Perform as a Survey Coordinator, Field Party Chief, or Survey Watch Stander for reef fish surveys conducted on NOAA Ships and Small Research Vessels and participate on other PEMD resource surveys, as requested. Critical analytical skillsets are required for estimation of abundance trends and representing the survey during stock assessment processes. Requires work on NOAA Ships and/or small Research Vessels and coordinating a field crew in fisheries and water quality sampling and experience at troubleshooting issues with limited resources while at sea. This role focuses on survey coordination more than at-sea technical duty, but still may require filling personnel gaps for technical jobs when at sea and during the video review process.     Key Responsibilities

    a) Survey Duties

    Survey Coordination requires focused project management skills, clear and effective communication, adherence to survey SOP's, and knowledge of survey design and analysis. Additionally this position will often still be needed at all other at-sea duties. At sea duties focus on video camera and CTD deployments, habitat mapping, and other environmental data collection. Duties include but are not limited to:

    Assists the Gulf and Caribbean Reef Fish - Branch Chief (GCRF-BC) in coordination of all aspects survey preparation, execution, and completion for the Gulf - Fishery Independent Survey of Habitat and Ecosystem Resources (G-FISHER) and the Puerto Rico Deep Water survey (PRDW).Writes and/or reviews survey instructions/reports to ensure timely completion for survey execution and follow through on necessary approval paperwork.Helps set survey schedules and coordinates logistical support for supplies and equipment needs with GCRF-BC.Manages GitHUB Project Management tool to ensure consistent communication with GCRF-BC and personnel.Liaison between ship and lab/participants/TAS program.Coordinates daily vessel activities, personnel, vessel position and movements, ports of call and weather and sea conditions (FPC sea duty).While at sea conducts data collection, biological and/or environmental sampling and logging and processing data and/or samples under field conditions, as required and according to prescribed SOP (FPC sea duty).Complete incident reporting procedures as necessary in accordance with applicable NOAA Small Boat Program requirements (FPC sea duty).Unload, clean and store equipment.     b) Laboratory Duties

    Survey Coordination requires vigilance using the GitHUB project management tool to keep video reading and review duties on time. Primary duties revolve around annotation of video for habitat and species detection and enumeration. Collected video data is annotated using a semi-automated multi-stage process including 1) automated processing in Google Cloud Platform using VIAME software, 2) human-in-the-loop review and correction, 3) data review and QA/QC, 4) data output/ingest into GCRF Oracle databases, 4) updating GitHUB data for updates and project management. Duties include but are not limited to:

    Video annotation reviewer.Subject matter expert for identifying marine fishes in all life stages from diverse habitats of the Gulf of America and the Caribbean Sea.Assist in implementing VIAME into the QA/QC review process.Updating and managing GitHUB project for status updates.

    c) Data Management Support

    Survey coordination duties involve managing data projects via GitHUB project management tools, acting as a liaison between OMI to update Oracle databases and ensure data standardization, quality, requests/delivery, backups, and security. In the near future these will also include determining and setting standards for automated data outputs to ensure interoperability and democratization of datasets. Primary duties include but are not limited to:

    Data steward and liaison with OMIHelp integrate the SEAMAP Reef Fish Video and Panama City Video data sets into a singular Oracle database for GFISHER.Manage data backups and security with OMI personnel.Work with FATES personnel to integrate new automated data output and to meet standards for interoperability of AI/ML algorithms and libraries.Manage video data annotation entry projectsManage GitHUB project management tool to keep projects on track.

    d) Analytical Support

    a) Laboratory and Fieldwork-Support Duties

    Tasks shall include but is not limited to:

    Maintain recirculating culture systems within the coral culture facility, conduct safety inspections, monitor water quality, and report malfunctions in facility operations to the Program/Task Order Manager.Conduct routine care of live coral specimens under optimum conditions for health/growth including tank setup and cleaning for ESA coral species.     Minimum Qualifications (Required)

    Bachelor's degree in marine sciences or related biology fields with at least 2 years of experience related to maintaining coral culture systems. Previous experience with saltwater aquaria or similar aquatic systems is desired.Knowledge of applying basic water quality, aquaculture/mariculture and animal husbandry concepts, principles and methodologies and be capable of independently performing scientific tasks using established methods and techniques.Knowledge of basic plumbing, carpentry and facility maintenanceCapable of following oral and written instructions and learning sea turtle husbandry and recognizing animal behaviors while on the job.Capable of writing reports at the college level and making oral and written presentations.Must possess a valid driver's license, issued in the USA.Must be able to lift 50 lb sacks of salt and load into a pick-up truck and work in environments where temperatures are maintained at or near 40°ree;F.
