TITLE: CONTROLLER
Position Overview:
Our client, a growing mid-sized law firm with approximately 50–60 attorneys, is seeking a hands-on Controller to lead all accounting and financial operations. This role combines strategic financial leadership with day-to-day accounting oversight and serves as a key business partner to firm leadership. The ideal candidate will bring strong accounting expertise, advanced financial modeling skills, and experience leveraging AI-driven tools to enhance reporting, forecasting, and operational decision-making.
Reporting directly to firm leadership, the Controller will oversee accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, billing, collections, and process improvement initiatives while supporting the firm's continued growth.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Management & Reporting:
all accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and billing operations.Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, including partner-level reporting.Manage month-end and year-end close processes.Review account reconciliations, analyze variances, and maintain strong internal controls.Ensure compliance with accounting standards, trust accounting (IOLTA), and applicable regulatory requirements.Billing, Collections & Profitability Analysis:
Oversee billing and collections processes, including legal billing systems such as Centerbase.Monitor revenue, collections, and partner/practice group profitability.Provide financial insights to support expense management and operational performance.Budgeting, Forecasting & Strategic Planning:
Lead annual budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning efforts.Develop and maintain advanced Excel-based financial models and scenario analyses.Optimize QuickBooks reporting and financial management processes.Technology & Process Improvement:
Utilize AI tools (Claude preferred) and automation to improve financial reporting, forecasting, dashboard creation, and data analysis.Identify opportunities to streamline processes and improve operational efficiency.Partner with attorneys and business professionals to support strategic initiatives.Leadership:
Manage and mentor accounting staff, including oversight of the firm's bookkeeper and billing/collections functions.Collaborate closely with firm leadership and management on financial and operational matters.Support additional accounting and finance initiatives as needed.Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field (CPA not required).5–7+ years of accounting experience, including at least 2 years of leadership or staff management experience.Experience supporting organizations with annual revenues between $30M–$50M.Strong proficiency in QuickBooks and advanced Microsoft Excel.Experience utilizing AI tools in a finance or accounting environment for reporting, analysis, or dashboard development.Strong understanding of accounting operations, billing, collections, and financial reporting.Law firm or professional services accounting experience is preferredExperience with legal billing platforms, particularly Centerbase.Company DescriptionAbout The Rockridge Group:TITLE: LITIGATION PARALEGAL (NJ-hybrid)
