    Job DescriptionJob Description

    The Industrial Electrician at the sawmill facility is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and troubleshooting the electrical systems and equipment essential to the sawmill operations. This role ensures that all electrical systems function efficiently and safely to minimize downtime and optimize production. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of industrial electrical systems, motor controls, and PLCs, as well as the ability to work in a fast-paced, safety-conscious environment.

     

    Major Responsibilities and Duties:

    Electrical Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance on electrical systems, including lighting, motor controls, power distribution, and equipment wiring.Troubleshooting & Repairs: Diagnose electrical issues in machinery, conveyors, saws, and other equipment, and make necessary repairs to ensure safe and continuous operation.PLC & Control Systems: Troubleshoot, repair, and program PLCs and automated control systems.Installations: Install, test, and calibrate new electrical equipment, machinery, and control panels to ensure they meet operational and safety standards.Preventative Maintenance: Conduct regular inspections and preventative maintenance on electrical systems and components to reduce downtime and improve equipment lifespan.Safety & Compliance: Ensure that all electrical work adheres to local codes, safety standards, and company procedures. Maintain a safe working environment by following all safety protocols and regulations.Documentation: Keep accurate records of electrical work performed, including inspections, repairs, and replacements.Collaboration: Work closely with maintenance teams, production teams, and contractors to resolve electrical problems and improve processesEmergency Response: Respond to electrical emergencies during shifts, ensuring the fastest and safest resolution to prevent delays or damage to the sawmill’s operations.

     

    Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Required:

    Education: Completion of an accredited apprenticeship program in electrical maintenance or equivalent experience.Licensing: Valid electrician’s license (may vary depending on location).Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of experience as an industrial electrician, preferably in a manufacturing, sawmill, or heavy industrial setting.

    Skills:

    Proficiency in troubleshooting and repairing industrial electrical systems, including motor control centers (MCCs), conveyors, and heavy machinery.Strong knowledge of PLCs, variable frequency drives (VFDs), electrical wiring, and power distribution systems.Experience with electrical schematics and diagrams.Familiarity with OSHA and safety regulations related to electrical work.Ability to work independently and as part of a team to solve complex electrical issues.Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.Strong attention to detail to ensure materials are processed correctly.

    Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

    Must be able to stand 100% of scheduled shift. Lifting, pushing, prying and dragging heavy materials.Must be capable of bending, stooping, crawling under or over and occasional climbing of stairs/ladders heights up to 6 or 7 feet.Abnormal levels of noise due to grinding, chipping, hammering requires hearing protection (ear plus) to be worn at all times.Must be able to work in a fast-paced environmentMust be able to lift up to 50 poundsPosition requires manual dexterity, arm-hand steadiness and a safety-minded individual.Must be able to work in an open environment exposed to extreme temperatures.

    POSITION OVERVIEW:

    Reporting to the Supervisor, the Millwright will provide quality operational repairs and preventative maintenance services. You will be responsible for all mill machinery and duties including:

    • Maintenance of pumps, conveyors, compressors, mechanical systems, rollers & chains, bearings and hydraulics involved in the manufacturing process;

    • Undertake preventative and predictive maintenance program for equipment;

    • Read blueprints, diagrams, and schematic drawings to assemble equipment and follow work procedures & processes;• Operate hoisting and lifting devices to position machinery and parts during the assembly, installation, set-up, and repair of equipment and machinery;

    • Inspect and examine machinery and equipment to detect and investigate irregularities and malfunctions;

    • Troubleshoot, analyze, diagnose, lubricate, and perform maintenance work on machinery;

    • Repair and assemble hydraulic equipment and cylinders;

    • Assemble large, precision heavy equipment for the Lumber/wood processing sector;

    • Utilize knowledge and skills to recognize opportunities for improvements and savings.


    Work Experience

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Millwright qualification;

    • Perform preventative maintenance work as well as make repairs to maintain mill flow in a fast-paced production environment;

    • Proficiency in cutting and welding operations using oxy-acetylene equipment and electric welders;

    • Ability to read blueprints, plans and schematics;

    • Strong problem-solving skills;

    • Commitment to working safely coupled with strong communication & interpersonal skills;

    • Ability to work independently with little supervision;

    • Previous experience in a Saw Mill or heavy industry preferred;

    • Swing shift work is required;

    • Organizational and planning skills as well as proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.

    The Spark Watch Utility is responsible for monitoring, identifying, and responding to sparks, embers and other fire in high-heat-production areas. This role plays a critical part in maintaining a safe work environment by preventing fire hazards, ensuring housekeeping standards, and supporting production operations as needed.

    Major Responsibilities and Duties:

    Spark & Fire Watch

    Continuously monitor designated areas for sparks, embers, or potential fire hazards during and after hot work or production activities such as (welding, cutting or grinding)Immediately report and respond to unsafe conditions or fire incidents.Maintain compliance with OSHA and company fire safety protocol.

    Safety & Compliance

    Ensure fire extinguishers, water hoses, and other firefighting equipment are available and functional.Follow all lockout/tagout, PPE, and hot-work permit requirements.In the event of a fire, the spark watch EE is responsible for sounding the alarm, alerting personnel, and contacting emergency services. They may also engage in the initial fire control efforts using extinguishers.Ensuring that fire safety equipment, such as extinguishers and alarms, is operational and accessible (this is a critical duty)

    Housekeeping & Utility Support

    Perform cleanup of sawdust, debris, and flammable materials around work areas.Support production departments with basic utility tasks such as material handling, stacking, sweeping, and maintaining a clear workspace.

    Communication & Teamwork

    Communicate hazards promptly to supervisors and team members.Collaborate with maintenance, EHS, and production teams to ensure safe operations.Participate in safety meetings, training, and required drills.

    Monitoring and Surveillance:

    Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Required:

    Prior experience in industrial, manufacturing, or construction environment preferred.Knowledge of fire safety practices, hot work procedures, and spark/fire watch requirements (training provided)

    Skills & Competencies:

    Ability to remain attentive and alert during extended monitoring periods.Strong communication skills and ability to follow detailed safety instructions and to report hazards and coordinate with emergency services.
