    Job DescriptionJob DescriptionDescription:

At Summer Consultants, finance is not just about closing the books. It is about helping the firm run better.

We are a project-based engineering consulting firm serving federal, institutional, and higher education clients. That means strong financial operations matter at every level of the business, from accurate project setup and billing to reliable reporting, clean data, and better decision-making. Job DescriptionJob DescriptionDescription:

When you walk into a building, do you immediately start analyzing it? Do you wonder how the building is protected, how people get out safely, where the fire alarm devices are located, or how automatic suppression systems are routed through the space? We do too.

Summer Consultants is looking for a recent graduate or early-career engineer with up to three years of experience to join our Fire Protection team in Greenbelt, MD. You do not need to have studied Fire Protection Engineering specifically to be considered. A degree in Fire Protection Engineering is great, but a Mechanical Engineering or Architectural Engineering degree with a strong interest in fire protection, life safety, fire alarm, and suppression systems can also be a strong fit.

Much of our work involves renovations, frequently focused on MEP/FP systems within existing buildings. That means our engineers spend real time in the field: walking buildings, surveying existing conditions, tracing systems, observing constraints, and figuring out how new designs can actually work inside spaces that were not built with a clean sheet of paper.

This is a good role for someone who wants to learn by seeing buildings firsthand. Field surveys are an important part of how our engineers understand existing systems, develop judgment, and design practical solutions. You will learn how to look at a building, ask the right questions, document what is there, and help turn those observations into high-quality fire protection design.

The fun and challenge of renovation work is solving real constraints: how to make equipment fit, how to route piping or devices through existing spaces, how to work around active building operations, and how to think through how a contractor will actually build the design. Clients choose Summer Consultants when they want the work done right the first time. We are proud that 95% of our clients would refer us to others.

We serve our clients’ missions as if they were our own, whether supporting the warfighter or our nation’s government, institutional, and educational clients.

With our office located in the Nation’s Capital Region, our interesting client list, and our focus on renovation, you will get to work in and survey some interesting buildings, sometimes seeing history from the inside out. Check out our projects page for examples of our work.

Curious about building systems, life safety, and how fire protection design works in the real world? Let’s see what we can do together.

We rarely have “typical” projects because buildings are unique, and so are their systems.Help you develop into a well-rounded consulting engineer through mentoring, project exposure, and field experience.Give you direct access to senior engineers, including time in the field observing existing conditions, building constraints, and project challenges.Offer a small, collaborative, and technically engaged environment where you can ask questions and build real competence.

    Job DescriptionJob DescriptionDescription:

Do you enjoy solving building problems that are not obvious at first glance?

At Summer Consultants, we do more than “just design.” Many of our clients come to us knowing the symptoms of a problem, but not the cause. Our work is to investigate, understand what is really happening, develop practical solutions, and help clients choose the right path forward.

Most of our projects are renovations, often focused on MEP/FP systems in existing buildings. That makes the work technically interesting and challenging. You may be figuring out how to fit new electrical equipment into an existing building, how to phase work around ongoing operations, how to coordinate with other disciplines, or how a contractor will actually build the design.

Clients choose Summer Consultants when they want the work done right the first time. We serve federal, institutional, and higher education clients whose facilities support important missions, including government, defense, research, education, and public service.

This role is designed for an Electrical Engineer who is ready for more than task completion. We are looking for someone who can own technical work, coordinate across disciplines, support project execution, communicate clearly, mentor earlier-career staff, and continue building the judgment required for future project and team leadership.

You do not need to have mastered all of that already. But you do need to want that trajectory.

What Summer Consultants Can Do for You

At SCI, you will have the opportunity to:

Work on varied and technically challenging renovation projects across multiple facility and client types. Expand your technical knowledge in lighting, power distribution, low-voltage systems, surveys, code analysis, calculations, equipment selection, specifications, and construction-phase support. Learn from experienced engineers who understand both design quality and practical constructability. Build project management skills through exposure to scope, schedule, budget, coordination, and deliverable accountability. Develop as a well-rounded consulting engineer, not just a production designer. Gain client-facing and field experience in facilities that are often interesting, complex, historic, occupied, or mission-critical. Contribute to a small, professional, collaborative firm where your work is visible and your growth matters.

    Requirements:

What You Should Bring With You

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Architectural Engineering with an electrical or lighting focus, or a closely related discipline. 4 to 9 years of relevant electrical design experience, preferably in building systems consulting. Experience with lighting and power design. Experience producing construction documents and supporting construction administration. Experience performing field surveys, preparing code analyses, calculations, equipment selections, and specifications. Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or Revit. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications. Experience with AGI32, SKM, and/or EasyPower is a plus. EIT, PE license, or active pursuit of PE licensure preferred. Strong written and verbal English communication skills. Strong planning, organization, and follow-through. Solid technical foundation and a willingness to keep learning. Ability to work effectively in a cross-disciplinary team environment. Interest in mentoring earlier-career staff and developing future project leadership skills. Professional, approachable, team-first demeanor. Ability to obtain site access at client locations. Ability to travel up to 12 nights per year, in addition to day-long field surveys. Ability to conduct day-long field surveys outdoors and indoors in conditioned and unconditioned spaces, including walking 10,000–20,000 steps in a day, climbing up and down a 6-foot ladder, kneeling, squatting, and bending.

    Company Benefits

100% company-paid employee-only health insurance, with 50% of family premiums paid. Dental and vision insurance available. 401(k) with total employer contribution opportunity of up to 7%. Company paid short-term and long-term disability insurance, plus life and AD&D coverage. Eleven (11) paid holidays. Twenty-two (22) days of PTO per year. Education Assistance Program. Flexible work environment, including hybrid work options.

    Why This Role Matters

Mid-career engineers are essential to SCI’s ability to deliver high-quality work, develop newer staff, support project managers, and build the next generation of technical and team leadership.

This role is for someone who wants to keep growing: technically, professionally, and as a future leader in a consulting engineering environment.

We are such great problem solvers that 95% of our clients would refer us to others. Clients choose us when they want the job done right the first time.

Clients also choose us because they like how involved our management is with the design process. And that’s why our senior engineers are typically our project managers. You’ll manage the project internally, but also be the face of Summer Consultants to the client, fostering that relationship. You’re also encouraged to seek out new clients.

We serve our clients' missions as if they were our own, whether supporting the warfighter or our nation's finest government and educational institutions.

With our office located in the Mid-Atlantic Region, our interesting client list, and a focus on renovation, you will get to go into some interesting buildings, sometimes seeing history from the inside out. Check out our projects page for some examples of our work.

This position will report to the Vice President in charge of electrical staff in the Virginia Beach Office.
