    Position Overview

    Spartan is seeking an experienced Network Security Administrator / Firewall Engineer to support enterprise network and cybersecurity operations for State of Colorado agencies.

    This role provides hands-on administration, troubleshooting, modernization, and security support for critical network infrastructure, with a strong emphasis on Palo Alto and Cisco ASA firewalls. The selected candidate will work closely with technical teams and state stakeholders to maintain secure, compliant, and highly available network environments.

    Candidates who are not U.S. Citizens or who do not currently reside in the State of Colorado will not be considered for this position.

    The selected candidate must also be able to successfully complete required criminal and financial background checks and a drug screening.

    Key Responsibilities

    Review, troubleshoot, and execute Firewall Service Requests (FSRs).Respond to network and firewall break-fix incidents and service tickets.Develop, review, and implement formal network and security change requests.Configure, administer, and troubleshoot Palo Alto next-generation firewalls.Configure, administer, and troubleshoot Cisco ASA firewalls.Create and maintain firewall security policies, access rules, NAT configurations, zones, and network objects.Configure and troubleshoot site-to-site VPNs and associated network connectivity.Support basic threat-prevention and network security controls.Assist with the replacement, refresh, and decommissioning of End-of-Life (EOL) network and security hardware.Perform recurring infrastructure modernization activities across supported environments.Implement and maintain security controls required to support applicable IRS, FBI, and Criminal Justice Information (CJI/CJIS) compliance requirements.Troubleshoot routing, subnetting, connectivity, and other Layer 2/Layer 3 network issues.Coordinate with infrastructure, cybersecurity, application, and agency teams to resolve operational issues.Maintain technical documentation associated with firewall configurations, changes, incidents, and infrastructure upgrades.Participate in planned maintenance activities and emergency network/security response when required.

    Required Technical Qualifications

    Candidates should demonstrate working knowledge and hands-on experience with:

    Palo Alto Firewalls

    Security zonesSecurity policies and rulesNetwork Address Translation (NAT)Site-to-Site VPNsFirewall objects and rule managementBasic threat-prevention capabilitiesFirewall troubleshooting and operational support

    Cisco ASA Firewalls

    Firewall configurationAccess Control Lists and rule managementNATVPN configurationTroubleshootingOperational administration and maintenance

    Networking Fundamentals

    TCP/IPIPv4 addressingSubnettingRouting concepts and protocolsVLANsDNS and DHCP fundamentalsOSI modelNetwork troubleshooting methodology

    Preferred Qualifications

    Previous experience supporting enterprise or government network environments.Experience working within formal ITIL, change-management, or ticket-management processes.Experience supporting regulated or compliance-driven environments.Knowledge of CJIS/CJI, FBI, IRS, or comparable government security standards.Experience performing firewall migrations, hardware refreshes, or EOL infrastructure replacements.Ability to independently troubleshoot complex network and firewall issues.Strong written documentation and communication skills.

    Schedule and Availability

    This position is expected to provide coverage comparable to a full-time technical staff member.

    40 hours per weekMonday through FridayParticipation in a rotating weekly on-call scheduleAvailability for scheduled after-hours maintenance windowsAvailability to support emergency incidents outside normal business hours when necessary

    Mandatory Candidate Requirements

    Applicants must meet all of the following requirements:

    Must be a U.S. CitizenMust currently reside in ColoradoMust be able to work the required full-time schedule.Must be able to participate in an after-hours/on-call rotation.Must successfully pass required criminal background screening.Must successfully pass required financial background screening.Must successfully pass a drug test.Must possess sufficient hands-on experience with Palo Alto and/or Cisco ASA firewall environments to independently support day-to-day network security operations.

    Candidates who do not meet the U.S. citizenship and Colorado residency requirements should not apply.
