AC Paving Superintendent (Heavy Civil – Caltrans Projects)
Position Summary
An AC (Asphalt Concrete) Paving Superintendent oversees asphalt paving operations for roadway, highway, and site development projects. This role manages field crews, equipment, subcontractors, schedules, safety compliance, quality control, and coordination with project managers and clients to ensure paving projects are completed safely, on time, and within budget.
Key Responsibilities
Supervise daily asphalt paving operations and field personnelCoordinate paving schedules, trucking logistics, and equipment utilizationEnsure projects comply with plans, specifications, and quality standardsMonitor asphalt placement, compaction, grade, and paving tolerancesLead and enforce company safety policies and OSHA complianceConduct daily job-site meetings and safety briefingsCoordinate with project managers, estimators, inspectors, subcontractors, and suppliersReview project drawings, specifications, and production targetsManage labor productivity and crew assignmentsTroubleshoot field issues related to paving, grading, traffic control, or materialsTrack quantities, production rates, delays, and daily reportsInspect equipment condition and coordinate maintenance needsEnsure proper traffic control and public safety procedures are followedSupport training and development of operators and labor crewsMaintain communication with clients, municipalities, and inspectors
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required5–10+ years of asphalt paving experience3–5+ years in a supervisory or superintendent role preferredStrong knowledge of asphalt paving operations, compaction methods, and roadway constructionAbility to read blueprints, grading plans, and project specificationsKnowledge of OSHA regulations and construction safety standardsExperience managing paving crews, equipment operators, and subcontractorsStrong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skillsValid driver’s license Ability to work extended hours, nights, weekends, and travel as needed
Preferred Skills
GPS grade control and paving technology experienceKnowledge of DOT specifications and testing requirementsExperience with milling, grading, and underground coordinationBilingual English/Spanish communication skills a plusProficiency with construction reporting software and scheduling tools
Physical Requirements
Ability to work outdoors in varied weather conditionsAbility to stand, walk, climb, and work around heavy equipmentFrequently lift up to 50 poundsAbility to work long shifts during paving operations

Compensation: $120,000- $150,000 annually. The exact starting compensation to be offered will be determined at the time of selecting an applicant for hire and will be dependent on a wide range of factors, including but not limited to skill set, experience, education, credentials, and Licensure when applicable.

Position Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Structural Superintendent with a strong background in heavy civil construction and direct experience working on Caltrans projects. This role is responsible for overseeing field operations, ensuring work is completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with all project specifications and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead and manage daily field operations for structural scopes (bridges, retaining walls, drainage structures, etc.)Coordinate subcontractors, crews, and material deliveriesEnsure strict compliance with Caltrans Standard Specifications, plans, and special provisionsMaintain project schedule and proactively identify/resolve delaysEnforce safety standards and ensure adherence to company and Caltrans safety requirementsConduct daily field meetings, inspections, and progress trackingCollaborate with project managers, engineers, inspectors, and stakeholdersReview plans, specifications, RFIs, and submittalsMonitor quality control and ensure work meets required tolerances and standardsMaintain accurate daily reports and documentation
Required Qualifications:
5–10+ years of experience in heavy civil constructionProven experience as a Superintendent or Foreman on Caltrans projectsStrong knowledge of:Caltrans specifications and proceduresStructural concrete, falsework, rebar, and formwork systemsBridge construction and/or transportation infrastructureAbility to read and interpret plans, specifications, and shop drawingsStrong leadership and communication skillsExperience managing multiple crews and subcontractorsProficiency in scheduling and construction management practices
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with large-scale public works or DOT projectsFamiliarity with Caltrans inspection processes and documentationOSHA 30 certificationBackground in CPM scheduling (Primavera P6 or similar)Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus
