Position Summary
The Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides hands-on support and assistance to individuals with developmental disabilities in their homes and communities. DSPs help individuals achieve greater independence, maintain their health and safety, and actively participate in community life.
This role requires compassion, professionalism, strong communication skills, and the ability to work independently while following each individual's support plan.
Key Responsibilities
Direct Care & Personal Support
Assist with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), including bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and meal preparationProvide supervision, companionship, and emotional supportSupport individuals in developing and maintaining independent living skillsEncourage personal choice, self-advocacy, and community participationAssist with mobility, transfers, and physical support when necessaryCommunity Integration
Accompany individuals to appointments, recreational activities, shopping trips, and community eventsProvide transportation as neededEncourage social interaction and relationship-building opportunitiesSupport participation in hobbies, employment, volunteer work, and community programsHousehold Support
Assist with light housekeeping and laundryHelp maintain a safe, clean, and organized living environmentSupport meal planning and preparationAssist with grocery shopping and other daily living tasksDocumentation & Compliance
Complete daily service documentation accurately and on timeReport incidents, concerns, or changes in condition promptlyFollow Individual Service Plans (ISPs) and Behavior Support Plans when applicableMaintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulationsFollow all DODD, Medicaid, and Safe Haven Home Care policies and proceduresParticipate in required training and continuing educationRequired Qualifications
High School Diploma or GEDValid driver's licenseReliable transportation and proof of insuranceAbility to pass state and federal background checksAbility to use a smartphone or tablet for documentationStrong communication and interpersonal skillsAbility to work independently and responsiblyAbility to assist with lifting, transfers, and physical support when requiredCPR/First Aid Certification (or willingness to obtain)Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilitiesExperience in healthcare, home care, education, behavioral health, or human servicesExperience supporting individuals with behavioral challengesKnowledge of person-centered planning principlesSchedule
