    POSITION SUMMARY This position is accountable for providing marine project supervision to job site crews working for Orion. The incumbent reports to the VP of Operations and directs field activities through the General Foremen and/or Foremen who report to this position. They are also influential in the hiring, firing, advancement, and promotion of other employees. Typically, this individual will work closely with the General Superintendent, Crane Operator, Foremen, Pile Driving Foremen, Project (Field) Engineer, Safety Representative, Boat Captain, Pile Drivers, Welders, Apprentices, and other skilled or semi-skilled craft persons on the work site. The incumbent must support the guiding beliefs and core values of Orion which are centered on Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Teamwork, each built upon the all-important foundation of Integrity. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES * Works closely with the Project Manager to plan and execute marine projects and ensure their successful completion. * Coordinates project objectives and plans with General Foremen and/or Foremen and subcontractors as may be required prior to actual construction. * Works with members of the project team to secure the equipment necessary for the project to be completed. * Attends pre-construction meetings to monitor the project status and obtain a grasp of the job scope and time schedule. * Reviews the job schedule and cost breakdown and meets with the Project Manager to gain a complete understanding of potential challenges and problems prior to beginning the job. * Maintains good working relationship with the Project Manager, seeking his/her assistance in the scheduling of materials, equipment, and subcontractors. * Sets up the job office and equipment trailers if required and ensures that permits, labor notices, safety rules, HR policies, and EEOC materials are posted in a conspicuous place. * Works with the Office Manager to identify and recruit qualified applicants for all craft openings that are required to adequately staff the project. * Provides input in the hiring, firing, advancement, and promotion of other employees. * Communicates with the General Superintendent or Project Manager daily to update him/her on project status. * Maintains inventory control over tools and equipment, ensuring that movable tools are returned to the tool room and all other equipment is adequately stored. * Works with the General Foremen and/or Foremen to ensure that safety barricades and signs are in the proper place as required by the job. * Troubleshoots and problem-solves as required on construction issues and problems that arise. * Ensures that all change orders are properly executed as directed by the Project Manager or General Superintendent. * Meets regularly with General Foremen and/or Foremen to ensure that construction project deadlines are being met and that project work is completed on time. * Inspects the project work for quality of workmanship to ensure that Company standards and government regulations are met. * Attends the weekly Project Manager meetings to discuss job progress and any problems currently being encountered. * Monitors project work expenditures versus projected costs for materials and supplies purchased and ensures that project expenditures are under budget. * Coordinates maintenance of heavy equipment on the project and supervises effective utilization. * Performs periodic inspections of the job sites to ensure that standardized construction procedures are followed. * Meets regularly with the Field Safety Representative to ensure that all safety equipment and first aid items are present at the job site in case of emergency. * Meets with and assists inspectors or auditors on their scheduled or unscheduled visits to the job site. * Works with General Foremen and/or Foremen to ensure that employees comply with Orion Marine Group Policies & Procedures, EEOC, and other regulatory guidelines. * Holds all employees at the job site accountable for complying with Orion Marine Group Safety/Operational Policies and mandated regulatory guidelines and demonstrating safe work practices at the job site. * Ensures that good housekeeping practices are observed and maintained and that any potential safety hazard is corrected. * Ensures that the project site is secured after work hours and that appropriate security measures are in place. * Ensures that new employees receive safety training and job-specific training prior to beginning their field assignments. * Updates the Project Manager regularly on estimated percent completion on each phase of the project. * Works closely with the General Superintendent, Pile Driving Foreman, Crane Operations Foreman, Crane Operators, Welders, Apprentices, and other skilled and semi-skilled crafts persons to complete current projects in a safe and environmentally sound manner. * Participates in Safety and Environmental initiatives that contribute to compliance with State/Federal regulations and improve existing Company programs. POSITION REQUIREMENTS * A minimum of eight (8) years marine construction experience on work barges or job sites or equivalent experience in a marine construction supervisory capacity is required. * Incumbents must be well-versed in receiving and handling equipment used for marine operations. * Knowledge of the integration of various crafts to successfully perform their work. Craft knowledge should include pile driving, crane operations, welding, carpentry, sandblasting, pipefitting, and related areas. * Previous supervisory experience and certification in First Aid and CPR. * Well organized to effectively oversee all aspects of the project. * Ability to hold Foremen and their crews accountable for safe work practices and work performance excellence. * Foresight to avoid potential problems before they arise. * Conscientious attitude towards controlling job costs and adhering to project schedules. * Ability to influence and motivate Foremen and their work crews. * Excellent communication skills. Ensures that the assigned projects meet budget, schedule, quality, and safety objectives. The incumbent must have the ability and flexibility to work varying shifts and long hours (8-12 hours). Weekend work and extra hours occur according to production needs. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES * Works with the VP of Engineering and Engineering and Structural Design team to achieve departmental business goals and objectives. * Leads the growth and development of our team by providing mentorship, technical guidance, and participation in the hiring and evaluation of junior staff. * Interfaces with engineering and project team members and/or customer/client to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the engineering services being requested. * Applies extensive and diversified knowledge of principles and practices in broad areas of assigned engineering projects. * Performs structural engineering analysis and design of new and existing marine structures (bulkheads, sheet-pile walls, retaining walls, concrete wharves, and mooring/breasting dolphins). * Performs finite element structural modeling of marine structures (SAP or STAAD). * Reviews complete project documents for conformity and quality assurance. * Develops new techniques and/or improved processes for design projects. * Provides technical advice on safe designs and construction. * Reviews and approves scopes, budgets, and schedules for assignments. * Prepares bid package proposals for upcoming engineering and project work. * Represents the Company at industry-wide conferences and symposiums. POSITION REQUIREMENTS * BS Degree in Structural Engineering from an accredited college or university and a minimum of eight (8) years of work experience is required. Prior work experience in the marine construction, heavy industrial, or engineering design industries is preferred but not required. The incumbent must have a working knowledge of Project Engineering Standards, Marine Construction Materials, Procurement, Estimating, Scheduling, Project Tracking Software, Cost Control, and Safety and Environmental Compliance. * The incumbent must have the ability to quickly learn the technical aspects of the business; be an effective communicator; have the ability to interface well with employees at all levels of the organization; and possess a high degree of personal integrity. * Discretion and trustworthiness and the ability to keep all Company information and materials strictly confidential (both internally and externally) are essential elements of this position. * Must be well organized, diligent, and be a self-starter with the ability to work with minimal supervision and to independently identify work to be done. Must be flexible and have the ability to adjust to sudden changes in work priorities. The incumbent must also have the ability to prioritize work generally and in order to accommodate those changes. Attention to detail and extreme care in performing tasks accurately and carefully are also essential. * The Company expects and requires incumbent and each of its other employees to observe and fulfill the above and all other safety responsibilities and actively work toward maintaining a safe workplace. PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS * The incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation. * The individual must also be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment if required to work or visit the jobsite. This may include hard hat, safety glasses, respirators, ear plugs, steel-toed shoes, personal flotation devices, or other equipment as required by the work performed and location the work is being done. * The incumbent must possess the ability to remain calm during emergencies and respond appropriately as dictated by the circumstance of the incident and as directed by the Safety Representative or other management personnel.
