The Medical Assistant is a member of the health care team primarily responsible for providing support to physicians, nurses, and other licensed medical staff by facilitating efficient patient flow, assisting with various patient care activities, and performing related administrative functions. The Medical Assistant is responsible for ensuring efficient patient flow through the clinic; maintaining neat, clean and safe patient care areas; promoting patient satisfaction by interacting with patients in a professional, friendly manner; safeguarding patient confidentiality. Responsibilities: * Assures efficient patient flow through the site: Escorts patient to exam room, identifies patient with 2 identifiers and prepares patient for examination. Obtains accurate vital signs, per organization standards. Documents reason for visit and updates/confirms, allergies, smoking history and pharmacy information. Promptly informs the provider and registered nurse of any significant change in vital signs or acute symptoms. Anticipates/sets up equipment or supplies needed for visit. Cleans and prepares exam room for next patient. Responds to needs to expedite visits and maintain flow of patients and prioritize tasks accordingly. * Assists practitioner with medical and surgical procedures in accordance with established protocols such as: Electrocardiogram (ECG), venipuncture, immunizations, setting up procedure trays, specimen collection and/or Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) waived testing as directed by Provider. * Provides high quality care by: Prepares and stocks all exam rooms in treatment area by following established protocols for disinfecting and sterilizing equipment and instruments. Participates in environmental safety rounds. Maintains vaccine/medication inventory. Monitors and maintains equipment and instruments according to clinic guidelines. Assists in ordering supplies and correctly disposes of all expired items. Adheres to office opening and closing procedures. * Functions as an integral part of the patient care team and promotes patient satisfaction by interacting with patients in a professional, friendly manner: Accepts and performs delegated responsibilities in a positive manner. Offers assistance to others. Attends and participates in staff meetings. Communicates appropriately and effectively with patients and patient care team (in the office and on the phone) * Performs delegated procedures common to the specialty area in a safe, effective, and efficient manner (see specialty practice addendum) * Performs all other duties as assigned by the Supervisor or Manager Qualifications Required: * High school diploma or GED. * Current certification in one of the below or must have written proof of meeting candidate eligibility requirements for writing one of the five eligible certification exams (AAMA, AMT, NCCT, NHA, NRCMA) * Accepted documentation: * New MA Graduates within six (6) months from date of graduation from an MA Program must submit: a letter from the school or a letter from the certifying body * Non-Certified MAs or new graduates past six (6) months from date of graduation from an MA program must submit: a letter from the certifying body * Within first six months of employment, will complete one of the following certifications after up to two test attempts: * Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) through American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) * Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) through American Medical Technologists (AMT) or * National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) through the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) * Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) through the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) * Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA) through the National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP) * Signed acknowledgement during onboarding that certification must be attained within six (6) months, as a condition of employment * American Heart Association accredited Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification. * Zero (0) to two (2) years' experience in a relevant role. * Strong computer skills. Must be able to work Monday and Thursday 9:30am - 7pm; Wednesday and Friday 9am - 4pm; Saturday 9am - 2pm. Must be able to work Monday through Friday 8am to 5:30pm and rotating weekends. Flexibility with hours is needed for clients who may start earlier or stay later than the posted hours. Will be scheduled to work every other weekend. Must be comfortable driving to client sites in Southside Chicago and various South suburbs of Chicago. Base hourly rate includes float differential compensation. Responsibilities: * Performs phlebotomy and other lab specimen collections per age related standards. * Provides appropriate post-phlebotomy patient care. * Identifies need for patient medical assistance and call code as appropriate. * Reviews/Records refrigerator temperature(s) and QC/QA records. Areas of concern are recorded through the Corrective Action Log and reported to maintenance for repair. Findings are reported to supervisor or manager. * Use manual requisitions and labels specimens appropriately. * Label and process specimens according to establishes protocols and policies. * Must effectively procure blood specimens from infant, adult, geriatric, and wheelchair bound patients. * Must demonstrate competency for age related responsibilities. * Understands the operation and maintenance of equipment pertinent to the job. * Follows up with all outstanding orders on manifest log, and communicates all timed, completed or uncompleted draws/charges/results to the client office staff and performs other duties as assigned. * Requests/obtains written physician orders with all required information necessary for lab services requested and accurately orders laboratory tests in computer system(s). * Prioritizes tasks and is able to multi-task. * Performs and collects phlebotomy specimens within cost and maintains efforts of a less than 2 percent recollection or cancellation rate. * Follows TJC National Patient Safety goals in regard to two patient identifiers and handwashing. * Presents a friendly, approachable, professional demeanor and appearance. * Provides accurate information and timely updates to patients and customers. * Addresses questions and concerns promptly, or identifies appropriate person or recourse to do so. * Demonstrates teamwork by helping co-workers within and across departments. * Communicates effectively with others, respects diverse opinions and styles and acknowledges the assistance and contributions of others. * Uses organizational and unit/department resources efficiently. * Manages work schedule efficiently, completing tasks and assignments on time. * Participates in efforts to reduce costs, streamline work processes and improve and grow services we provide. * Communicates and notifies Laboratory and/or Physician of problems with specimen procurement to ensure optimal care. * Provides follow up on test results to appropriate individuals in a professional and courteous manner. * Continuously updated on information by reading emails and demonstrates compliance in MediaLab. * Maintains a safe work environment, holds self-accountable for safe work practices, performs all aspects of daily work in a manner that contributes and ensures an environment of patient safety. * Adheres to all recommendations and requirements of the Lab and Hospital Safety Committee. * Performs all aspects of patient care in a manner that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors. * Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices. * Performs clerical duties directly related to handling and processing of lab specimens. * Performs clerical work; faxing, printing, filing, reviewing, and verbally releasing laboratory results. * Initiates the meeting of responsibilities without prompting and can complete tasks independently without immediate supervision. * Demonstrates the values of team concept on a consistent basis. * Interacts with all team members in a professional manner and aids/assists coworkers to complete assigned tasks. * Travel to additional sites when needed. Qualifications Required: * High School diploma or equivalent. * Phlebotomy certification through a nationally recognized organization or training from a phlebotomy school or medical institution or one or more years of phlebotomy experience in a healthcare setting.
