    New Mexico Legal Aid (NMLA) provides civil legal services to low-income New Mexicans to promote family and economic stability, helping clients access food, shelter, security, and to preserve their unique cultural heritages. NMLA has locations throughout the state, including Santa Ana Pueblo, Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Las Cruces, Gallup, Roswell, Silver City, and Taos.

    The Paralegal will provide litigation and administrative support to attorneys serving low-income clients across a range of civil legal matters. This role supports work in areas such as housing, domestic violence, consumer protection, family law, public benefits, and other areas of law based on community need and program priorities.

    The Paralegal plays a key role in supporting client services by assisting with case development, maintaining accurate records, and helping ensure cases move forward efficiently. This position involves regular client interaction and requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to client-centered service.

    This position is located in our Santa Fe office and reports to the Northern Managing Attorney and will work closely with the Litigation Director.

    The Paralegal will provide services through a combination of client support, case coordination, and administrative assistance. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    Conduct client intakes and assist with gathering relevant case information.Provide general support to attorneys in preparation for hearings and court proceedings.Draft legal documents, correspondence, and other written materials.Maintain and organize case files, ensuring accurate and timely documentation.Track deadlines, court dates, and case activities using case management systems.Communicate effectively and respectfully with clients, including those in crisis or under stress.Coordinate referrals to community resources and partner organizations as appropriate.Assist with data collection and reporting requirements.Support outreach efforts and community education activities.Collaborate with attorneys, staff, and external partners across multiple offices.Attend court proceedings with clients and/or attorneys as needed.Other duties as assigned.

    This role requires flexibility and adaptability, as priorities and case needs may shift based on client demand. The Paralegal is an integral part of the legal team and contributes directly to improving access to justice for low-income New Mexicans.

    Required Qualifications

    Paralegal experience preferred; exceptional entry-level candidates will be considered.Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively.Strong written and oral communication skills.Ability to work independently and as part of a team.Ability to build collaborative relationships with clients, staff, and community partners.Proficiency with computer technology, including Microsoft Office, shared online workspaces, and remote communication tools.Ability to learn and use case management systems effectively.Willingness and ability to travel as needed.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Experience working at a civil legal services or nonprofit environment.Experience working with low-income or underserved populations.Proficiency in Spanish.

    NMLA has established a Medical-Legal Partnership with Christus St. Vincent Hospital in Santa Fe and is seeking a Staff Attorney to provide legal services to patients referred by the hospital. This position is based in the Santa Fe office, reports to the Northern Managing Attorney, and includes significant on-site work at the hospital. A confidential workspace will be provided for use while at the hospital.

    The Staff Attorney will manage a broad range of civil legal matters for patients referred to the Medical-Legal Partnership, with some services extending to patients' family members. This work focuses on addressing social determinants of health that have legal implications and removing legal barriers that may impact patient care or discharge.

    Legal matters may include, but are not limited to, issues related to loss or denial of public benefits, housing instability, consumer debt and collections, threats to economic security, advance directives, and decisional capacity.

    The Staff Attorney will support the Medical-Legal Partnership through a combination of direct legal services, collaboration, and community engagement. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    Provide legal advice and representation to patients in civil legal matters.Prepare for and appear in court and administrative proceedings as needed.Collaborate with healthcare providers to identify and address legal issues impacting patient health.Conduct trainings and legal education for hospital staff to help identify potential legal needs.Assist in the preparation of reports on program activities and outcomes.Participate in hospital meetings, including potential board or stakeholder presentations.Engage in local bar and community activities to support outreach and program visibility.Contribute to team strategies and cross-office collaboration within NMLA.Other duties and casework as assigned.

    Staff Attorneys are part of the community lawyering model and are responsible for handling civil legal matters and outreach related thereto in areas that are responsive to community needs. As such, the Staff Attorney will be expected to maintain a case load that may include (but is not limited to) the following:

    Family law: domestic violence orders of protection, custody, kinship-guardianship, and divorce;Housing: eviction defense; mobile home sales and rental issues under the Mobile Home Park Act; and prevention of housing subsidy terminations before Federal or State entities;Consumer Protection: predatory lending; banking regulatory laws as they related to consumer accounts; auto sales and lending; and deceptive commercial practices;Public Benefits: social security disability overpayment cases; Medicaid, SNAP, and TANF access issues; SSI denials and benefit amount issues.

    This position is located in our Santa Fe office and reports to the Northern Managing Attorney.

    The Staff Attorney will provide services through a combination of direct representation, legal advocacy, and community engagement. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    Provide legal advice, brief services, and full representation to clients in legal matters.Interview clients, assess legal issues, and develop case strategies aligned with applicable law and program priorities.Prepare legal documents, including pleadings, motions, and other filings.Represent clients in court hearings, administrative proceedings, and appeals as needed.Conduct legal research, factual investigation, and discovery to support case development.Maintain accurate and timely case files and documentation in accordance with program requirements.Manage an active caseload, prioritizing urgent matters and meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment.Collaborate with colleagues, supervisors, and external partners, including co-counsel and community organizations.Conduct community outreach and legal education to clients, service providers, and community groups.Participate in program initiatives, special projects, and advocacy efforts that support low-income communities.Other duties as assigned.

    Working in a generalist role requires adaptability and sound judgment, as case types and priorities may shift based on client and community needs. This position plays a key role in advancing access to justice by addressing legal barriers that impact the day-to-day lives of low-income New Mexicans.

    Required Qualifications:

    NMLA's Native American Program (NAP) provides free legal services - both civil and criminal - to eligible low-income Native Americans living on or near the 19 Pueblos and the Mescalero Apache tribe in New Mexico. In addition to cases promoting family and economic stability, NAP prioritizes cases arising because of someone's status as a Native American, including tribal and Indian law, estate planning involving tribal property, racial discrimination, and tribal criminal court cases. Much of NAP's caseload is comprised of cases in Pueblo courts, but the program handles poverty law issues coming up in other fora as well.

    NAP does creative, challenging, and complex work in diverse client communities. We are looking for highly motivated candidates who are passionate and strongly committed to helping serve Native American communities, including developing effective team strategies to handle complex advocacy. The attorney shall be active in relevant bar and community activities. All NMLA staff attorney positions fall under a collective bargaining agreement. This position is based in NAP's office on Santa Ana Pueblo, New Mexico, and includes regular travel around the state.

    We are seeking two NAP Staff Attorneys, whose responsibilities include but are not limited to the following tasks, under the supervision and direction of the NAP Litigation Specialist and NAP Director:

    Provides legal services, from advice to full representation, to eligible clients within NAP's priorities.Participates in NAP's outreach activities, which include developing community education presentations and pro se materials responsive to the needs of NAP's client community members, meeting with tribal agency personnel regarding the legal issues of their communities, and staffing occasional NAP legal clinics.Analyzes NAP applicants' needs to highlight areas where systemic solutions or more dedicated focus would prove valuable.

    Requirements:
