    About The Role

    Among other responsibilities, uses cross-functional knowledge and highly-developed working relationships to develop a thorough understanding of the company’s business, its technologies, products, customers, collaborators and competitors to provide strategic guidance to internal clients and teams to facilitate the business and intellectual property objectives of the Company. Oversees and directs the patent and/or intellectual property function within an organization, including outside counsel, internal patent agents and patent attorneys as appropriate. Responsibilities may include overseeing the preparation, filing, prosecution and enforcement of: patent applications, trade secrets, trademarks, copyrights, licensing and research agreements, publications and intellectual property aspects of contracts and agreements. Advises and informs senior management of patent prosecution matters. Ensures that legal issues and recommendations are communicated to clients. Selects, develops, manages and evaluates personnel to ensure the efficient operation of the function.

    Your Contributions (include, But Not Limited To)

    Develop high level intellectual property strategy, identification of inventions, and management of patent drafting and prosecution relating to small molecule drugsProvide legal advice to assigned business partners on a broad range of topics involving intellectual propertyIdentifying opportunities for expanding the Company’s Intellectual property position and collaborating with members of various discovery, development and business groups within the CompanyWorking and communicating with collaborators and other external strategic partners in connection with developing a global IP strategyProvides leadership, personnel management, mentoring and coaching to attorneys, patent agents, paralegals, and/or support staffHarvest, protect and commercialize intellectual property arising from the company’s R&D programsLead stage-appropriate freedom-to-operate analysis and effectively manage the related litigation riskManage patent and IP-related contentious matters, together with internal legal staff and outside counselImplement internal processes, procedures and training centered on intellectual property identification and protectionWork with scientific team and technical leads to identify, evaluate and protect intellectual property arising from various R&D programsDraft, review and negotiate intellectual property provisions of manufacturing, process development, purchase, supply, license, and master service agreementsNegotiate and support other technology transactions, such as commercial in-licenses, non-disclosure agreements, material transfer agreements, testing agreements and other similar activitiesOther duties as assigned

    Requirements

    Juris Doctorate (JD) degree and 12+ years of practice as an attorney in a well-regarded law firm and in-house pharmaceutical industry experiencePhD in organic chemistry or allied chemistry discipline preferredMaster's degree in organic chemistry or allied chemistry discipline requiredActive license to practice law in any state or the District of Columbia is required (California preferred)Experience with Orange Book and Patent Term Extension practice for the US and SPC practice for Europe;A broad range of patent-related legal expertise required, including in patent preparation, both U.S. and foreign prosecution, IP due diligence, and strategic counselingExpertise in IP litigation and the aspects of regulatory affairs related to market exclusivityAbility to build consensus with diverse stakeholders and third parties and form strong, collaborative working relationships with clientsComfortable in front of collaborators, suppliers, peers and senior management in both leading and supporting rolesProven analytical capacity, superior legal and business judgment; ability to recognize business impact of legal adviceAbility to set aggressive deadlines, handle multiple complex legal matters and see projects through to conclusionRequires an individual who can work in new subject matter areas on a daily basis, assimilate information quickly and develop expertise in those areasCollaborates with all levels of management and requires the ability to work confidently, proactively and assertively with a high level of independenceActs as a "trusted advisor" across the company and may be recognized as an external expertProvides strategy, vision and direction regarding issues that may have company-wide impactRequires in-depth knowledge of the functional area, business strategies, and the company’s goalsPossesses industry-leading knowledgeWorks well in a matrix organizationAbility to make clear decisions in a fast-paced drug discovery environmentHighly proficient in both verbal and written communicationExceptional leadership and problem-solving skills to effectively manage and develop staff, including substantial successful personnel management experienceExcellent interpersonal, leadership and communication skills are required for interacting with both internal and external resourcesMust be self-motivated, detail-oriented, decisiveAbility to quickly learn and think independentlyDemonstrated ability to influence and lead others

    The annual base salary we reasonably expect to pay is $282,600.00-$409,200.00. Individual pay decisions depend on various factors, such as primary work location, complexity and responsibility of role, job duties/requirements, and relevant experience and skills. In addition, this position offers an annual bonus with a target of 35% of the earned base salary and eligibility to participate in our equity based long term incentive program. Benefits offered include a retirement savings plan (with company match), paid vacation, holiday and personal days, paid caregiver/parental and medical leave, and health benefits to include medical, prescription drug, dental and vision coverage in accordance with the terms and conditions of the applicable plans.

    About the Role:

    The Executive Director of Medical Affairs, based at Neurocrine headquarters in San Diego, will report directly to the VP of Medical Affairs & HEOR and lead the planning and execution of all medical strategies for Ingrezza and the broader psychiatry portfolio, aligning with business goals and market needs. This role involves deep collaboration with cross-functional and Medical leadership to define a clear vision and strategy for priority assets in the therapy area, ensuring tactical plans align to strategic objectives, compliantly supporting clinical development and commercial efforts, partnering with HEOR on Ph4 and RWD generation and strategy, and oversight and accountability for Psychiatry related Field Medical teams. Additionally, the Executive Director will advance key Medical Affairs and scientific research initiatives by building relationships with KOLs, closing educational gaps (internally and externally), and leveraging market insights to evolve strategy in accordance with compliance and regulatory best practices.

    Your Contributions (include, but not limited to):

    Collect and synthesize insights from external stakeholders to understand education and data needs of providers, payers, patients, and caregivers to inform Medical Affairs strategic planning

    Drive cross-functional alignment on medical affairs strategy, brand planning, and clinical development and data generation programs

    Develop and execute medical strategies for Ingrezza and the broader psychiatry portfolio that aligns with business goals and market needs including oversight of tactical planning for field medical teams

    Collaborate with cross-functional teams to generate real-world evidence, clinical data, and health economic research for products

    Provide guidance to Field Medical (e.g., MSL, CPL) and strategy and performance for Ingrezza and priority pipeline assets including supporting strategic disease education and engagement planning

    Advance the science related to company products and clinical development programs by growing relationships with Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) and partnering with research organizations

    Develop robust training initiatives to ensure the highest level of scientific technical acumen for all Medical Affairs team members

    Partner with the Health Economics and Outcomes Research (HEOR) function in the creation and execution of research

    Assess protocol grant submissions to the Investigator-Initiated Trial (IIT) program

    Assist the Medical Communications function in creating and implementing publications and data dissemination plans, including medical congress tactics

    Oversee the development and delivery of tailored medical programs and activities (e.g., presentations, publications, Advisory Boards) to support evidence-based decision-making among customers

    Provide monthly status updates and team performance reports to the VP of Medical Affairs & HEOR on key initiatives

    Ensure all Medical Affairs strategies, tactics, and initiatives are in compliance with regulations, guidelines, and ethical standards

    Perform other duties as assigned, contributing to the overall success of Medical Affairs initiatives

    Must reside locally, this is an office based role

    Requirements:

    MD required and 8+ years of relevant experience Preferred experience: Clinical Practice experience in Psychiatry

    Highly effective communicator and collaborator, both internally and externally

    Passion for education and addressing unmet medical needs in psychiatry

    Expert in Psychiatry with prior leadership in pharma

    Recognized as a subject matter expert and thought leader in psychiatry with extensive medical and business experience within a strategic organization

    Requires broad and comprehensive expertise in leading-edge theories and techniques within strategic job function

    Applies ingenuity and creativity to problem analysis and resolution in complicated and/or novel situations

    Influences internal/external business and/or industry issues
