    Position Summary

    The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is an exciting and prestigious research facility that plays a vital role in the study of the universe. The Observatory operates a variety of radio telescopes that span the globe, including the famous Very Large Array (VLA) in New Mexico, the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia, and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile. These telescopes are among the most advanced in the world, allowing astronomers to explore the universe in unprecedented detail.

    At the Green Bank Observatory, we are recruiting a Mechanical Engineer to join the Telescope Operations Division to support upcoming projects to bring new capabilities to our telescopes. In this role, you will take on impactful assignments across the breadth of telescope operations to deliver new infrastructure while maintaining existing telescope systems. Tasks include performing engineering analysis, driving design innovation, and executing projects that provide solutions to keep our world-class telescopes at the forefront of science. Your responsibilities will span the full project lifecycle: from design recommendations and procurement to manufacturing, construction, testing, and initial operations. This position requires a motivated person with high-level organizational skills who is comfortable working in an academic environment alongside engineers, scientists, and technical staff toward the overall mission of the Observatories.

    This position will be based on site at the Green Bank Observatory in Green Bank, WV. The position is initially available for a two-year appointment but may be extended or converted to a non-term appointment with budget and mutual interest.

    What You Will be Doing:

    Lead and contribute to the design, analysis, and integration of mechanical systems for major telescope subsystems, including thermal management, environmental enclosures, structural components, cable routing, and maintenance/access infrastructure Support the development, improvement, and deployment of mechanical assemblies associated with telescope instruments, receivers, and protective systems Coordinate with engineers, technicians, and cross-disciplinary teams to identify challenges, develop solutions, and ensure that designs meet functional, operational, and safety requirements Oversee or support the fabrication, installation, testing, and verification of mechanical systems, ensuring conformance with specifications, procedures, and quality standards Participate in observatory-wide engineering initiatives, contributing to both new development projects and the resolution of technical and operational issues Direct or collaborate with technical staff in the construction, maintenance, and repair of site equipment and support systems Assist in preparing project documentation including cost estimates, schedules, technical analyses, and recommendations for improvements or equipment procurement Maintain compliance with safety policies, identify and address unsafe conditions, and promote safe work practices Perform other engineering duties as assigned

    Work Environment

    Work is mission driven, team oriented and typically performed in an office setting within a research or development environment. Occasional field work in an industrial setting will be required.

    Who You Are:

    You have a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. You have at least 3 years' experience in related field. While not required, you may have a Master's Degree in Engineering and/or 5+ years of relevant experience.

    Competency Summary

    You are proficient in the use of computer and software packages such as Autocad and Inventor and be willing to learn such packages as Nastran (structural analysis software). You have high-level of competency in Microsoft software products and web-based systems, Visio and SharePoint. You have excellent communication skills - both verbally and in writing. You can apply critical attention to detail. You are highly organized. While not required, you may have experience with machining or manufacturing.

    Additional Requirements

    Will be required to stand and sit and perform fine hand manipulation. Must be able to operate a personal computer. Must work near moving mechanical parts and/or with electrical equipment. Occasionally required to climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, and crouch. May occasionally work and in high, precarious places and in outside weather conditions, and may be exposed to chemicals, or the risk of electrical shock. Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color and depth perception.

    Observatory employees must be authorized to work in the United States. The Observatory presently cannot sponsor H-1B Visas for this position.

    Tour guides must have a pleasant disposition, excellent communication skills, and patience and tact in working with the public. They must be comfortable with public speaking and be able to deliver presentations with a professional appearance.     What You Will be Doing:

    Leading guided tours, which includes giving auditorium presentations and driving tour buses. Creating a welcoming experience by greeting guests and providing excellent customer service. Assisting with school field trips and motor coach tours. Delivering informal docent programs to the public and youth groups. Monitoring exhibits and assisting with basic troubleshooting. Opening & closing the Science Center building and exhibit hall as scheduled. Assisting with cleaning and upkeep of buses and presentation and public spaces throughout the day.     Who You Are:

    You have a High School diploma; a ssociates degree with studies emphasizing science or science education or equivalent preferred.     The CDL seeks an experienced Electronics Engineer to lead its Cold Cartridge Group, currently working on engineering and production of the next generation of the 209 - 281 GHz receivers for the ALMA telescope.

    The successful candidate will be responsible for the personnel, programmatic, and technical management of a team of about five employees and coordinating with other engineering groups. This team is responsible for developing, and constructing hardware, firmware, and software used on radio telescopes or in the laboratories.

    The location for the position will be in Charlottesville, VA. A remote work arrangement is not desirable for this position.

    What You Will be Doing:

    Advising staff on technical and operational matters, prioritization, and conducting performance evaluations. Responsible for ensuring compliance with NRAO and government safety policies and procedures. Responsible for development and analysis of system and subsystem architecture and requirements. Developing technical proposals, reports, and other technical papers. Conducting tests and data recording and analysis for verification of performance and compliance with specifications. Responsible for oversight of the lifecycle of hardware, software, and firmware for group.

    Who You Are:

You are knowledgeable in the field of RF and microwave engineering theory and practice. Additionally, knowledge of radio astronomy theories and practice would be valuable, and experience in cryogenics practices is desirable.     The NRAO is seeking an Operations Specialist to join our Operations team at the Very Large Array (VLA) in New Mexico. The Operations Specialist provides skilled technical assistance, under limited supervision, in the execution of astronomical observing programs, basic analysis and archiving of data. The Operations Specialist operates an array of 27 telescopes as one system ensuring the acquisition of data from the instrument delivers a high level of data quality while ensuring the safety of personnel and equipment. Candidates with preferred experience and education will be considered for a higher-level Operation Specialist ranking; duties and responsibilities increase with each level. This is a "Safety Sensitive" position as described in the Position Requirements below.

    The position is based at the VLA, 50 miles west of Socorro, NM. Socorro is a small, historical town in the Rio Grande Valley, 75 miles south of Albuquerque

    What You Will be Doing:

    The essential responsibilities of an Operations Specialist include:Operating and monitoring telescopes and supporting equipment;Cross training to operate the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA);Troubleshooting and taking corrective action when errors and faults occur;Communicating with personnel working on the array and tracking activity, notifying personnel of dangerous weather conditions, monitoring fire alarm systems and responding to emergencies;Initiating telescope control and preparing the antenna, receivers, clocks, recording systems, and other hardware/software for operation;Receiving observing instructions from on-site or remote observers and executing observing programs including, but not limited to, processing incoming observe files, verifying against published schedules, annotating files on the observation schedule, executing observing programs, and sending pointing results to observers;Aiding and accommodating requests from, observers, scientific staff, engineers, and technicians in regards to basic commands for telescope controls and data analyses;Monitoring readings and alerts on multiple computer screens to detect unsafe equipment conditions and ensuring all systems are configured correctly and operating normally;Monitoring fringe amplitude readings and data flagging codes to check data quality;Performing system tests to measure values used to finely tune each antenna. Verifying antenna functionality and receiver performance and updating system parameters, following antenna moves or a major hardware upgrade, in consultation with a system expert;Taking prescribed actions to protect telescope equipment;Making necessary personnel call-outs when equipment safety is compromised and/or when major problems occur;Maintaining an accurate observing log of failures, abnormal conditions, significant events, equipment status changes, procedural changes, or special instructions from observers or staff;Writing detailed maintenance reports for hardware and software problems;Documenting operational procedures and assisting with their upkeep;Collecting meteorological data for the National Weather Service;Driving daily shuttles to/from the VLA and the NRAO facility in Socorro;Proactive compliance with all NRAO policies and procedures is required;Other duties may be assigned.
    Additional responsibilities of an Operations Specialist II include:Providing advanced troubleshooting support and corrective actions when errors and faults occur;Performing ongoing analysis of operator's tools and methods, and documenting improvements;Developing procedures and documentation for new equipment based on technical information supplied by engineers or supervisors;Writing technical reports to describe operating characteristics, abnormal conditions, and functional limitations;Providing input/feedback on related and proposed hardware/software developments/issues and assisting in troubleshooting any detected problems;Training new operators;Assisting scientists in basic data analysis; Work Environment

    The Operations Specialist will work as part of a team that supports a 24 hour / 7-day rotating shift pattern consisting of day, evening and night shifts. A typical workweek is 4/10hr days with days off between shift changes. The work is indoors at a console with multiple computer terminals. Operators must be available for emergency call out and may be required to work overtime to cover vacant shifts or in emergencies until relieved. The employee will work at high altitudes and self-drive an Observatory vehicle to the VLA site. The Operator may be required to drive at night and possibly in adverse weather conditions.

    Who You Are: You have an Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from an accredited two-year college or technical school in math, physics, science or a related technical field. While not required, you may have a bachelor's degree in a related field and three or more years of experience in operating an industrial-sized astronomical telescope is preferred.
