    Examples of Duties:

    Assist with projects related to the economic development programs (Competitive Advantage, Local Economic Assistance, Freight Planning, CEDS/EDD)Gather, summarize, and analyze data on topics such as economic outlook and impact, demographics, best practices and morePrepare detailed factsheets distilling the information in Notice of Funding Opportunities to assist the internal team and external partners better understand a grant or loan opportunityDesign and create flyers, presentations, and other marketing materials, as needed, using online tools like CANVA and othersCommunicate across departments at MORPC (Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission), including making presentations at meetings, and externally with county partners and key stakeholders about technical assistance, funding tools and resourcesAssist the Economic Development team with the content and format for the Drive Investment newsletterConduct online research on programs related to economic and community development, transportation, infrastructure development and housing, as neededAttend external meetings hosted by regional partners along with other important webinars and meetings such as MORPCs State of the Region and the CEDS Committee meetingsAssist with event planning and organization of workshops and meetings related to economic developmentPerform special projects and other duties as assigned by the Economic Development team

    Qualifications Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:

    Strong interest in economic development, regional planning, and community development issues.Ability to work as part of a team or individually with little supervision.Strong writing and verbal communication skills.A strong work ethic and excellent interpersonal skills are necessary.Experience with Microsoft Office software, specifically Outlook and Excel, is required.Experience with Canva, ArcGIS, Adobe InDesign for projects is helpful.A valid drivers license and access to reliable transportation for occasional travel within the region.

    Training and Experience:

    Applicants must be enrolled in a college or university with preference given to an upper-class of a four-year degree or a graduate student. Fields related to Urban and Regional Planning, Public Policy, Economics, Public Administration, or a related field are preferred.A combination of training, experience and education will be considered.

    Examples of Duties:

    Assignments may include specific activities or policy issues related to transportation improvement program, traffic analysis, safety planning, transit planning, mobility management, and transportation demand management including:

    Collects, summarizes, and analyzes data including drawing inferences necessary for projects.Performs statistical analysis of data and prepares interpretive reports.Maintains various databases.Develops data profiles and reports.Prepares interpretive maps for reports, presentations, and meetingsAssists with survey preparation, execution, and analysisConducts field surveysConducts general research on transportation issues via internet and other sourcesCollects transportation related data from the fieldAssists with data analyses for annual reporting on transportation safety in the region.Assists with update/implementation of the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP), MORPC Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP), Central Ohio Rural Planning Organization (CORPO) Long Range Plan, the Central Ohio Active Transportation Plan (ATP), and the Central Ohio Transportation Safety Plan (COTSP).Assists with MORPC Technical Assistance Program and related services to members.Provides particular support on active transportation, transportation safety, and rural transportation planning work itemsProvides information to members, staff, and the general public.Assists with Gohio Mobility marketing/outreach and monitoring QA/QCAssists with the update/implementation of the 5310 Transit Asset Management and Program Management Plan, MORPC Transit Technical Assistance, and Central Ohio Mode Shift CoalitionProvides support to the Gohio Commute team and OARC Rideshare CommitteeAttends MORPC events to promote multimodal transportation optionsIdentifies new and emerging pilots, technology, and policies to promote multimodal transportation

    Typical Qualifications-Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    This position requires strong communication skills (both written and verbal) and organizational skills. Working knowledge of MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) is essential. Good statistical analytical abilities are desired. Familiarity with statistical software is a plus. Experience with ArcGIS and Access software is helpful. This is a team-oriented position, although the applicants must possess the ability to work independently. A strong work ethic and excellent interpersonal skills are a must.



    Acceptable Experience and Training:

    Applicant must be enrolled in a college or university, with preference given to an upper class of a four-year degree or graduate student. Fields related to Engineering, Transportation, City and Regional Planning, Urban Planning, Geography, or Economics are preferred. A combination of training, experience, and education equivalent to this will be considered.



    Essential Functions:

    The ideal candidate should be able to conduct independent research, have solid experience in databases, math, and statistical analysis, and be able to gather, analyze, and summarize disparate data. Must have ability to read and interpret maps, graphs, charts, and aerial photography.

    Job DescriptionJob DescriptionSalary: $15 to $20 per hour

    The MORPC Local Government Summer Internship Program provides the opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to obtain practical work experience with a local government within MORPCs 15-county region to prepare them for possible careers in public service. MORPC coordinates the recruitment and placement of students to match each hosts request; hosts make the final hiring decision and provide an hourly wage. Interns work for a host for a minimum of 16 hours to a maximum of 40 hours per week for a 10- to 14-week period, which means there are both part-time and full-time positions available. The summer 2026 internship program will begin on May 12th and will end on August 14th.


    Interns gain applicable knowledge to enhance classroom learning by working with current government professionals throughout Central Ohio and acquire insights into the services provided by a regional planning commission. Interns also can attend monthly commission meetings as well as special MORPC-sponsored events and are paired with a MORPC staff member to serve as their mentor during the summer internship program.


    Previous Economic Development interns have gained experience using Canva, Lightcast, Microsoft Excel, ArcGIS, OpenGov, and other software programs on the job. Specific past assignments include:

    Creating a downtown revitalization strategies planUpdating community profiles with current local demographic and transportation statisticsConducting impact analysis using Lightcast softwareResearching impact fees, zoning fees, and zoning codes to help planners rewrite community zoning code(s)Conducting follow-up inspections to ensure the completion of pending small development projectsCo-authoring housing strategy study and presenting to community board for approvalActivities designed to foster business retention, attraction, and expansionCreating new resident packets, distributing resident surveys, and other duties as assigned


    Qualifications

    Students must meet the following requirements:

    30 hours of completed college courseworkInterest in public service careersGPA 3.0 or higher (preferred)Legally eligible to work in the United StatesReliable transportation to and from workAttend a Central Ohio college OR attend other college and have access to local housing
