    Mercy Nursing Externship is a unique hands on learning experience designed to help nursing students bridge the gap between the classroom and real world practice. Offered in two 4 week summer sessions, this paid externship ($18/hr.) gives you the opportunity to work approximately 36 hours per week, rotating through a variety of units while learning directly at the elbow of a Mercy nurse.

    Participating in a Mercy Externship will assist in:

    Deepen your understanding of the nursing role within an acute care settingBuild confidence in delivering both direct and indirect patient careEnhance your clinical skills through dedicated preceptor time, including: IV therapy Foley care NG tube care and tube feeding Ostomy care Point-of-care testing, phlebotomy, and specimen collection Simple dressing changes Head to toe assessments Trach care

    You'll gain meaningful exposure to diverse patient populations, strengthen your critical thinking skills, and work closely with experienced nurses who are committed to supporting your learning and growth.

    Externship Requirement: Applicants must have completed at least 2 semesters of nursing school, including a minimum of one round of clinicals, by the start of the externship.

    About the Unit

    Our Medical Telemetry units (7E & 7W) care for a diverse mix of adult patients who require telemetry monitoring. Common diagnoses include cellulitis, pneumonia, urinary tract infections, chest pain, gastrointestinal issues, COPD exacerbations, and medically stable COVID patients.
    This is an excellent environment for nurses looking to strengthen assessment skills, broaden clinical experience, and grow within a supportive Med Surg/Telemetry team.

    Licensure: Must hold and maintain a current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Missouri or possess compact licensure, in accordance with state board of nursing regulations.

    Experience: Previous hospital experience is preferred and may be required depending on the unit.

    Certifications:

    Required: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association, or completion within 30 days of hire.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Education: BSN preferred

    Licensure: Additional state licensure or specialty certifications preferred

    We are high-paced, high-energy unit specializing in Obstetrics and Mother Baby, Well Newborn Care along Post Women's Surgical unit.

    Within our unit we have:

    40-MB rooms

    15-LDR rooms

    4-LIBC Birthing Suites

    4-Pre Post Rooms 3-OR suites (where we circulate all of our own cases

    Within our unit we also have Full time Lactation Consultants who see both inpatient and outpatients. Mercy OKC is the leading delivering hospital in Oklahoma City and second leading in the Ministry. Our teams offer a comprehensive suite of services at the Love Family's Women's Center.

    Nurses are expected to maintain competencies in Labor & Birth, Antepartum, and OB Emergency Department, and may be assigned to float between these departments based on patient care needs.
