    Your Opportunity + Impact

    The Hydraulic Designer is an entry‑level technical role on the Professional Engineer licensure track. This position applies basic to intermediate hydraulic engineering principles to support design computations, technical reports, drainage plans, and hydraulic modeling. Under the guidance of senior hydraulic engineers, the associate contributes to NCDOT drainage design, bridge and culvert replacement projects, and hydrologic/hydraulic analyses using CADD and OpenRoads Designer (ORD).

    Key Responsibilities

    Prepares and reviews hydraulic design computations, drainage layouts, and plan drawings.Supports NCDOT bridge and culvert replacement projects, including hydraulic reports, scour analysis, and drainage design tasks.Utilizes CADD and OpenRoads Designer (ORD) to develop drainage models, storm drain systems, and plan sheets.Assists with NCDOT drainage design, including stormwater conveyance systems, ditches, channels, and erosion control features.Reviews submittals and assists with project documentation and submissions.Prepares and reviews specifications, draft letters, and written technical reports.Researches, interprets, and applies NCDOT design standards, codes, and permitting requirements.Maintains accurate documentation of work and project records.Develops technically accurate, clean, and deliverable hydraulic drawings.Promotes and supports quality assurance and quality control processes to reduce design errors and improve deliverable quality.

    Education and Experience

    Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering or related field from an ABET‑accredited program.Experience: 0–2 years of relevant experience; prior internships in transportation, hydraulics, or A/E consulting preferred. Experience with CADD / OpenRoads Designer (ORD).Licensure/Certification: Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) preferred.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Strong desire to expand hydraulic engineering knowledge and take on new responsibilities.Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).Excellent organizational and time‑management skills to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.Strong oral and written communication skills; able to work independently and collaboratively within a project team.

    Your Opportunity + Impact

    The Engineer functions as a technical leader and is required to have a Professional Engineer (PE) license and commensurate work experience. This position coordinates overall design activities, project submission schedules, and is responsible for additional Quality Assurance and Quality Control duties to help ensure the final products meet the technical requirements and goals of the client.

    Key Responsibilities

    Performs independent planning and design tasks, review the work of others, prepare construction documents, and successfully deliver projects to completion.Works on technically complex projects and applies advanced knowledge to resolve challenges.Maintains collaborative inter-departmental and cross-functional working relationships with members of the project team.Conducts initial QA/QC reviews of project submissions to ensure compliance with client requirements and technical standards.Assists senior management in developing schedules, technical proposals, and labor hour estimates.Works closely with project teams to effectively communicate and deliver the scope of work.Promotes, utilizes, and supports quality assurance and quality control processes to enhance deliverables and reduce design errors or omissions.Performs and verifies design calculations, develops technical specifications, and prepares cost estimates.Develops and manages design budgets for routine scopes of work.Provides guidance, training, and support to engineering associates and interns, helping them develop technical skills, design intuition, and professional growth. 

    Education and Experience

    Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in position relevant Engineering field from ABET accredited school.Experience: Minimum of five (5) years’ of job-related experience.Licensure/Certification: Professional Engineer (PE) required.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Demonstrates a strong desire to expand knowledge and take on new responsibilities within the engineering field. Proficient in Revit, AutoCAD Civil 3D, Microstation/InRoads, and/or Hydrologic and Hydraulic Software Packages to be used for Site Layout, Grading, Utility, and Storm Water Management Plan design and/or other discipline-specific programs preferred.Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Power Point, Outlook). Excellent organizational and time management skills to handle multiple tasks and meet project deadlines effectively. Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a project team. Exhibits strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, with a commitment to technical excellence and innovation.
