The Controller is responsible for managing the companys financial operations with a strong emphasis on job cost accounting, project profitability analysis, and financial accuracy in a construction environment. This role oversees all accounting functions, supports strategic decision-making, and ensures the integrity of financial data and reporting. The Controller serves as a key partner to operations and leadership, providing insight into job performance, cost trends, and financial health. Key Responsibilities
Financial Management & Reporting
Manage month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring accuracy and timelinessPrepare financial statements, supporting schedules, and leadership reportsMonitor financial KPIs and analyze overall company performanceOversee general ledger activity and ensure proper account classificationEnsure timely and accurate completion of all account reconciliationsJob Cost Accounting & Project Analysis (Critical Focus)
Oversee job cost accounting and ensure accurate, real-time tracking by projectAnalyze job profitability across labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractorsPartner with operations to review job performance, cost overruns, and margin trendsMaintain WIP, backlog, and earned revenue reportingIdentify trends and recommend corrective actions to improve profitabilityProvide historical cost and margin data to support estimating and operationsAccounts & Transaction Oversight
Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and billing functionsEnsure timely invoicing, collections, and cash applicationMonitor AR aging and support collection effortsTrack and manage overhead and administrative expensesManage vendor relationships related to office and operational supportBudgeting, Forecasting & Cash Flow
Lead budgeting and forecasting processes across departmentsMonitor actual results vs. budget and analyze variancesSupport cash flow planning and financial forecastingProvide insights to support strategic planning and company growthInternal Controls, Compliance & Audit
Maintain internal controls to safeguard company assetsEnsure compliance with accounting standards and regulatory requirementsPrepare documentation and support audits and financial reviewsAssist with insurance renewals and ongoing risk managementSystems, Technology & Process Improvement
Oversee financial and office systems, ensuring accuracy and data integrityOversee implementation and effective use of office software and systemsIdentify and implement process improvements to increase efficiencySupport basic IT coordination and troubleshooting for office systemsLeadership & Cross-Functional Support
Serve as a key financial partner to operations and leadershipProvide backup and support to the President/CFOEnsure cross-training and coverage across accounting functionsCollaborate with operations, service, and sales teams on financial performanceCommunicate financial insights clearly to non-financial stakeholdersPerform additional duties as neededKey Performance Indicators (KPIs)

Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field requiredCPA or CMA preferred5+ years of progressive accounting experience with leadership responsibilityConstruction, roofing, or service-based industry experience preferredStrong knowledge of job cost and WIP accountingExperience with ERP/accounting systems and advanced ExcelStrong communication, analytical, and organizational skillsAAP/EEO Statement
