    POSITION: CONTROLLER

    Position Overview

    Joe Bland Construction LLC (JBC) and its affiliate Central Texas Stone and Aggregate, LLC (CTSA) are seeking an experienced, hands-on Controller to lead all accounting operations across our consolidated entities. JBC is a general contractor based in Austin, Texas, specializing in subdivision site improvements, utility distribution, road and bridge construction, and street paving. CTSA is a quarry and aggregate mining operation supplying base materials throughout Central Texas.

    This is a senior leadership role reporting directly to the CFO. The Controller will inherit a well-established accounting function and will be responsible for mentoring a newly hired staff accountant, managing external audit relationships, and ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting across two consolidated entities with a combined annual revenue exceeding $200 million.

    The ideal candidate is a CPA with 10 or more years of progressive accounting experience in the construction industry, a deep command of percentage-of-completion revenue recognition, and the maturity to operate with significant autonomy while serving as the CFO’s primary financial partner.

    Compensation & Benefits

    Key Responsibilities

    Financial Reporting & Close

    Lead all month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness of consolidated financial statements across JBC and CTSAPrepare and publish monthly financial statements and management reports for CFO and ownership reviewManage the preparation and review of all consolidating entries and intercompany eliminationsMaintain and reconcile the general ledger across both entitiesOversee revenue recognition under ASC 606, including percentage-of-completion accounting for construction contractsMaintain and review WIP schedules, job cost reports, and contract profitability analysis

    Fixed Assets, Leases & Debt

    Manage fixed asset subledger including capitalization, depreciation, disposals, and reconciliation to the general ledgerAdminister lease accounting under ASC 842, including right-of-use asset and lease liability schedules for financing and operating leasesMaintain debt schedules across all long-term debt facilities, including amortization, covenant tracking, and lender reportingCoordinate lender compliance reporting and ensure ongoing adherence to financial covenants

    Tax & Regulatory Compliance

    Prepare and file monthly Texas sales and use tax returnsCoordinate Texas franchise tax provisions and filings in conjunction with external advisorsResearch and document technical accounting issues to ensure compliance with US GAAP and applicable regulationsCoordinate regulatory reporting requirements as needed

    Audit & External Relationships

    Lead the annual external audit engagement from planning through issuance, serving as primary liaison with CD Bradshaw & Associates, P.C.Prepare all audit schedules, supporting workpapers, and requested documentationManage relationships with external auditors, tax advisors, lenders, and surety providers

    Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable & Payroll

    Oversee all A/R, A/P, billing, and collections functions, including contract receivables, retainage tracking, and trade payablesSupervise payroll processing and maintain internal controls around payroll approval and disbursementReview and approve payroll prior to processing in coordination with the CFO and HRManage inventory accounting and cost of sales tracking for CTSA aggregate operations

    Team Leadership & Internal Controls

    Directly supervise and develop a staff accountant, providing coaching, task delegation, and performance feedbackDesign, implement, and monitor internal controls across all accounting functionsMaintain and improve accounting policies, procedures, and documentationSupport CFO on financial analysis, modeling, and ad hoc reporting as neededServe as a key resource to operations and project management teams on job costing, billing, and financial questions

    Systems & Technology

    Serve as the accounting team’s primary administrator and power user of the Company’s fully integrated ERP systemLeverage advanced Microsoft Excel capabilities for financial modeling, reporting, and analysisIdentify and implement process improvements and system enhancements to increase efficiency and accuracy

    Qualifications

    Required

    CPA license required - active certification in good standing10 or more years of progressive accounting experience, with a minimum of 3 years in a Controller or equivalent senior accounting leadership roleDeep working knowledge of percentage-of-completion (POC) revenue recognition and WIP schedule management under ASC 606Strong command of US GAAP, including ASC 842 lease accounting and fixed asset accountingDemonstrated experience managing month-end and year-end close processes and leading external auditsExperience with fully integrated ERP systems (construction-focused ERP preferred)Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, financial modeling, and complex formulasProven ability to manage and develop junior accounting staffBachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
