    Job Summary

    We are looking for an experienced Diesel Technician specializing in Freightliner, Detroit Diesel, Allison Transmissions, Cummins products, and other heavy-duty vehicle systems. The Second Shift Diesel Technician will perform diagnostics, repairing, maintaining diesel engines and diesel components used in various vehicles and diesel equipment to ensure operational efficiency and compliance with safety standards. This role requires a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently during evening hours.

    Key Responsibilities

    Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues on Freightliner trucks, Detroit Diesel engines, Allison Transmissions, Cummins engines, and other heavy-duty equipment.Perform routine preventative maintenance, including oil changes, tire rotations, brake inspections, and fluid checks, to ensure vehicle reliability.Conduct thorough inspections to identify potential issues and recommend corrective actions.Utilize diagnostic tools and software to troubleshoot complex engine and transmission problems.Maintain accurate records of repairs, parts used, and maintenance performed using fleet management software.Ensure compliance with DOT regulations, safety standards, and company policies.Collaborate with the first shift team and supervisors to prioritize repair schedules and maintain workflow.Keep the workshop clean, organized, and compliant with safety protocols.Stay updated on the latest industry technologies, tools, and repair techniques for Freightliner, Detroit Diesel, Allison, and Cummins products.

    Qualifications

    Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of experience as a Diesel Mechanic, with specific expertise in Freightliner, Detroit Diesel, Allison Transmissions, and Cummins products.Certifications: ASE certifications (T2-T8 series preferred) or equivalent. Manufacturer-specific certifications (Freightliner, Detroit Diesel, Allison, or Cummins) are a plus.Skills:Proficient in diagnostic tools (e.g., Detroit Diesel Diagnostic Link, Cummins Insite, Allison DOC).Strong knowledge of diesel engine systems, transmissions, and heavy-duty vehicle components.Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and wiring diagrams.Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.Ability to work independently and manage time effectively during the second shift.Education: High school diploma or GED; technical school or vocational training in diesel mechanics preferred.Physical Requirements: Ability to lift to 75 lbs., stand for extended periods, and work in various weather conditions.License: Valid driver’s license required; CDL (Class A or B) preferred but not mandatory.Other: Must provide own tools (specialty tools provided by the company).

    Work primarily in a shop environment with occasional outdoor tasks.Exposure to noise, fumes, and heavy machinery; adherence to safety protocols is mandatory.Second shift schedule requires flexibility for occasional overtime or weekend on-call rotational work.

    Diesel Mechanic/Technician Job Duties:

This role is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a wide range of heavy-duty equipment, including over-the-road trucks, heavy equipment, workover rigs, fracturing (frac) equipment, and generators.

    This is a field-based position, ideal for a technician who enjoys working independently, communicating directly with customers, and performing hands-on work in real-world environments. Most workdays will begin from home, traveling directly to customer sites.

    Key Responsibilities

    Diagnose, repair, and maintain heavy-duty trucks, over-the-road equipment, workover rigs, frac equipment, generators, and related machinery.Perform routine and preventative maintenance to ensure equipment safety, reliability, and uptime.Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems efficiently in the field.Accurately document service work, including labor hours, parts used, and detailed repair notes.Communicate clearly and professionally with customers and internal teams regarding equipment status, repair timelines, and service recommendations.Work safely and comply with all company and regulatory safety standards while in the field.Manage tools, service parts, and inventory to ensure readiness for daily service calls.Travel to customer locations throughout the Gillette and surrounding areas as required.

    Qualifications

    Required

    High school diploma or equivalent; technical or vocational training in diesel mechanics, heavy equipment repair, or a related field preferred.Minimum of 3 years of hands-on field service experience working on heavy equipment and trucks.Documented field experience working on equipment, over-the-road trucks, mining equipment, and fracking (frac) equipment.Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to diagnose and repair complex systems.Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in a field environment.Strong communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with customers and internal teams.Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and respond to emergency or after-hours service calls as needed.

    Interstate Power Systems’ is looking for a Journeyman Diesel Truck Mechanic/Technician to join our second shift team (3:30pm - 12:00am) at our Carol Stream, Illinois location. We are currently seeking Journeyman Diesel Mechanic/Technician(s) to join our in-shop service team who are specializing in Freightliner, Detroit, Allison, Cummins, CAT products, MTU and more!

    A Journeyman Diesel Truck Technician will be a resident expert within their assigned field. They will have the ability to work a job from start to finish independently from assignment. Has expertise on all internal systems within their job scope. A Journeyman will mentor other employees by providing training and guidance on use of internal systems. This individual will proactively identify improvements, responds in times of need, and makes themselves available to service team. A Journeyman will have more than 5 years’ experience as a mechanic in the heavy-duty truck industry.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Diagnose and Repair: Troubleshoot complex mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic systems on heavy-duty diesel trucks using advanced diagnostic tools, schematics, and technical manuals (e.g., Cummins Insite, Detroit Diesel Diagnostic Link).Perform Maintenance: Conduct routine preventive maintenance, including oil changes, filter replacements, tire inspections, brake adjustments, and chassis lubrication to ensure truck reliability and compliance with federal and state regulations.Component Replacement: Replace or repair critical components such as diesel engines, transmissions, differentials, turbochargers, or brake systems.Welding and Fabrication: Perform minor welding, cutting, or fabrication tasks to repair or modify truck frames, bodies, or components as needed.Documentation: Complete detailed service reports, document parts used, and record maintenance activities for warranty, billing, DOT compliance, and inventory purposes.Customer Interaction: Communicate with fleet managers or drivers to explain repairs, provide maintenance recommendations, and ensure satisfaction with service.Safety Compliance: Adhere to OSHA, DOT, and company safety regulations, maintain a clean work environment, and follow manufacturer protocols.Tool and Equipment Management: Maintain and organize tools, service vehicles, and diagnostic equipment to ensure operational readiness for field service.

    Qualifications:

    Education: High school diploma or equivalent; technical diploma or certification in diesel mechanics or heavy-duty truck repair preferred.Experience: 5+ years of experience repairing and maintaining heavy-duty diesel trucks (e.g., Kenworth, Peterbilt, Freightliner, Volvo, or Mack).Skills:In-depth knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and electronic controls (e.g., ECM diagnostics).Proficiency with diagnostic tools (e.g., Cummins Insite, Detroit Diesel Diagnostic Link, or OEM software) and hand/power tools.Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and hydraulic schematics.Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.Basic welding and fabrication skills (preferred).Excellent communication and customer service skills for interacting with fleet managers and drivers.Certifications: Manufacturer-specific training (e.g., Cummins, Detroit Diesel, Paccar) or ASE Heavy Duty Truck certifications (e.g., T2–T8 series) are a plus.Physical Requirements: Ability to lift heavy parts (up to 50–75 lbs.), work in confined spaces (e.g., under truck chassis), and perform tasks in various weather conditions.Driver’s License: Valid driver’s license required; CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) with appropriate endorsements strongly preferred.
