    GRE HERC Services LLC (GHS) has an opening for a full-time Maintenance Mechanic Welder at its downtown Minneapolis facility. GHS operates the Hennepin Energy Recovery Center (HERC), on behalf of Hennepin County. HERC provides the county with cost effective resource recovery in harmony with a sustainable environment. We help the county manage waste by burning garbage to create energy for the electric grid and steam for nearby buildings.     In the Maintenance Mechanic Welder position, you help the team by performing various mechanical maintenance and repairs to ensure the safe and efficient operation of equipment in accordance with established plant operating procedures. This includes: 170kph boilers, pumps, conveyors, mag drum, air compressor systems, pugmill and ash metering screw, bag house, cooling tower, fans, valves, hydraulic systems, overhead cranes, and condensers.

    Responsibilities of this position include:

    Conducting standard preventive maintenance procedures within the facility to ensure the essential care, maintenance and operation of equipment, including taking vibration readings and pulling oil samples.Assisting operations with deslagging furnace.Maintaining a neat and organized work area in the shop and when completing work orders.Completing assigned tasks with professionalism – i.e., Tasks completed safely and to high standard, clean work areas after jobs are completed, maintain positive teamwork attitude.Self-supporting when completing assigned tasks by coordinating LOTO, confined space entry permit, hot works, pulling parts from inventory, requesting basic parts to order, etc.Notifying lead mechanic when assigned work orders are completed so new ones can be assigned.Conducting troubleshooting and repair activities, both scheduled and non-scheduled, to ensure that the plant works at optimum levels.Rebuilding conveyor systems, performing alignments, maintaining pumps, replacing fan shafts and bearings, completing shaft alignments, replacing wear parts in the boiler furnace and ash dischargers, replacing screw conveyor assemblies, replacing gearboxes and performing troubleshooting procedures in a logical manner.Using various shop equipment in the performance of assigned tasks, such as port-a-power and accessories, torch, plasma cutter, stationary and portable band saws, hydraulic press, mill and lathe, vibration analysis, trim balance, shaft alignment, and welding with stick, mig and tig welding. Cleaning and lubricating various equipment as required. Assisting with and performing rigging activities.Reporting any malfunctions or potential equipment problems to the lead mechanic and maintenance leader via email.Be available to be on call periodically over evenings, weekends, holidays and in emergency situations.Exchanging necessary information with team members.Complying with facility policies and procedures.Performing other duties as assigned by the maintenance leader or lead mechanic.

    To qualify for this position you must:

    Possess a high school diploma or equivalent Formal technical training is also required. Certificates in scaffolding, rigging, welding, and mobile equipment (forklift and scissor lift) preferred. A minimum of five years of experience in the repair and maintenance of mechanical equipment is mandatoryKnowledge of how various kinds of equipment work and how to maintain and repair themAbility to learn new skills and tools that enable the department to be more self-supportive and less reliant on contractorsKnowledge of safe work policies and practicesSkill to use hand tools, power tools and equipment to service and repair facility machineryBe able to read blueprints / piping and instrumental diagramsAbility to problem solve and analyze equipment issues to successfully repair themAbility to communicate effectively with team members and supervisorsBe proficient with computer software and usage with maintenance management system, e-mail system, time entry, etc.Be willing and able to be on call periodically over weekends and holidays as well as being willing to respond to plant emergencies on short notice.Be able to work in dirty areas and in confined spaces for extended periods in full face respirator and possibly in fall protection gear.Be able to climb onto equipment, walk and stand for long periods, lift up to 50 pounds and be unafraid of working at heightsComplete a successful background check, drug/alcohol test and references

    Working Conditions:

    This position typically works Monday through Friday. Hours are: 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM. The ability to work overtime and on-call is required. Be available to be on call periodically over evenings, weekends, holidays and in emergency situations. This position is designated as a safety-sensitive position for drug, cannabis and alcohol testing purposes.

    Compensation and Benefits:

    In the Relief Shift Supervisor position, you provide relief plant operations leadership as required to cover the Shift Supervisor position during PTO and other absences, including the monitoring of the boilers, turbines, and steam plant. You optimize operations to ensure the efficient conversion of MSW to maximum output of generation. You also ensure the safe, reliable operation of the facility within all environmental limits and permits.

    Responsibilities of this position include:

    Ensure utilization of standard operating procedures processes through knowledge sharing and identification of business improvementsEnsure compliance with safety policies and procedures, laws and regulations. Reports and investigates accidents, maintains safety awareness, and promotes all aspects of GRE HERC Services (GHS) safety program. Conducts regular safety meetings with crew teamsEnsure continuous compliance with facility operating permit and other regulatory requirementsActs as expert and mentor to department staff members encouraging knowledge transfer among staffEstablish performance goals in support of the department goals and facility strategic imperatives. Provide regular feedback with all assigned employeesPrepare and justify training for employees while providing support for training and development to employees Promote positive employee accountability, responsibility and relationships in a self-directed work team environmentFacilitate conflict resolution between the staff members, GHS departments, and othersRecommends staffing needs in support of business needsUtilize and teach tools and concepts of continuous business improvementFamiliar with collective bargaining agreement and participate in discussions and meetings, dispute resolutions and other labor/management relationsPrepare reports of unusual occurrences, emission exceedances, equipment failures and other reports required by the regulatory agencies or GRE HERC Services managementPrepare recommendations and justification for plant betterment projectsFacilitate meetings to determine root cause and find solutions to operating or equipment upsets and/or failures


    To qualify for this position you must:

    Working Conditions:

    The schedule for this position could be 4x4 12-hour shifts days and nights when covering shifts with a regular schedule of four 10-hour days M-F when not covering shifts. This position is designated as a safety-sensitive position for drug, cannabis and alcohol testing purposes.

    Pay range: $119,583 to $155,427 (dependent on experience and qualifications)

    As a licensed Auxiliary Operator, you will operate and inspect various waste systems and equipment as assigned. These include the boilers and their associated systems such as fans, grates, ash and emission systems.

    Responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

    Making certain that boilers and their associated systems such as fans, grates, ash and emission systems are functioning properlyOperating various types of equipment safely, including boilers, pumps, motors, valves, fans, dampers, conveyors and other auxiliary systemsMaintaining work areas in a clean, orderly and safe mannerMonitoring and inspecting equipment to ensure its safe and efficient operationCommunicating information to supervisors and team members

    To qualify for this position you must:

    Hold a current ASME Provisional or MN Waste Combustor provisional and MN 2nd Class A Boiler License or be able to obtain the licensure within two years of taking the positionAuxiliary Operator on-the-job training (OJT) must be completed within 12 months of starting the positionHave experience servicing and adjusting boilers and related systemsKnow and practice excellent safety practicesBe able to adjust to rotating shifts every 8 daysBe able to work in a wide range of climatic conditionsBe able to lift up to 50 pounds and physically qualify for use of respirator equipment

    Responsibilities of this position include:

    Act as relief for the Control Room Operator in monitoring, controlling and maintaining all of the generating plant operations and systems of the facility Monitor and maintain boilers and their related systems, including fans, grates, ash and emission systems, to ensure they are functioning properlyEffectively and safely operate and maintain the front-end loader, crane, ash loader and all related equipment when assigned to one of the crew positionsRelieve operators for breaks and vacations Exchange necessary information with team members and shift supervisors Assist in the training of new operators Report any malfunctions or potential equipment problems to the shift supervisorPerform required documentation and record keeping activities

    To qualify for this position you must:

    Hold a current MN 1st Class A Boiler LicenseComplete an ASME Provisional or MN Waste Combustor provisional and Utility, Crane and Auxiliary on-the-job training (OJTs) within one year of starting the positionPossess a high school diploma or equivalent and additional technical trainingKnow and practice excellent safety practicesPossess strong communication, problem solving and flexibility skillsBe able to lift up to 50 pounds and physically qualify for use of respirator equipmentMust have a valid driver’s license

    This position normally works a 6AM – 4:30PM shift Monday - Thursday or 6 AM – 4:30 PM shift Tuesday – Friday. There is flexibility in the schedule depending on plant needs and situations. As a union position pay starts at $48.40 per hour. We offer medical, dental, vision, life, disability, paid time off, retirement plan, free on-site parking and more.
