          About the Position:

          The Associate Director of Planned Giving has the primary responsibilities of maintaining a personal portfolio of planned-giving donors and supporting the comprehensive fundraising campaign. The Associate Director's primary responsibilities include working closely with the Director of Planned Giving, Deans, Faculty, and Senior Staff members to develop fundraising priorities and strategies. The position also partners with Advancement colleagues to advance philanthropic giving to key priorities. The Associate Director follows up on leads generated from planned giving outreach, and coordinates with various schools/colleges/units.

          This is a position that is heavily focused on networking and building relationships and committed to the tracking of measures and metrics to build a pipeline of donors to support the aspirations of the University as a whole.

          This position has regional and national travel which may include overnights and weekends.

          Responsibilities:

          Maintain Personal Portfolio and Support Comprehensive Fundraising Program

          • Carry and manage a portfolio of planned giving donors and prospects for cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship;
          • Implement short- and long-term planned giving goals and strategies to build upon existing commitments and expand the current donor base pipeline to support George Mason University;
          • Support the overall long-term financial strength and support of the University by visiting with donors and prospective donors about a variety of gift possibilities, particularly deferred and planned gifts;
          • Follows leads generated from planned giving outreach;
          • Assists Director of Planned Giving with complex leads generated;
          • As appropriate, is personally responsible for the direct solicitation of gifts and for preparing the CDO, Deans, members of School/College's advisory boards, members of the school's Advancement team, faculty, staff, and other members of the School and/or University to make solicitations;
          • Works with offices across campus to coordinate related activities that further the University's mission and achieve fundraising goals; and
          • Conducts discovery visits with prospective donors as identified by Central Advancement Research and will also hand-off or disqualify individuals from their portfolio based on an unwillingness to connect, lack of affinity, or philanthropic interest in another aspect of Mason.

          Coordinate with Central Advancement and Schools/Colleges/Units

          • Coordinates fundraising with other departments and utilizes services as appropriate;
          • Ensures consistent and adequate communication between School/Unit and Central Advancement; and
          • Works closely with Central Advancement services including, but not limited to Annual Giving, Parents and Family Philanthropy, University Priorities, Alumni Relations, Communications, Systems, Operations, Donor Relations, Gifts and Records, etc.

          Other Duties as Assigned within the scope of the role

          • Attend fundraising events, as needed;
          • Conduct trainings and seminars for colleagues to enhance knowledge around planned giving;
          • Regional and national travel which may include overnights and weekends;
          • The ability and willingness to travel utilizing standard, commercial, and/or personal modes of transportation; and
          • The ability to work nights and weekends to attend university events as needed.

          Required Qualifications:

          • Master's degree in related field;
          • Considerable (generally three - five years) experience designing and executing planned giving-level donor identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies;
          • Considerable (generally three - five years) successful professional advancement and/or fundraising-related experience or any equivalent combination of education and/or experience;
          • Experience with successful collaboration with teams or stakeholders;
          • Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously and meeting continuous deadlines;
          • Experience documenting appropriate information in a donor management database system;
          • Experience interacting with a wide variety of constituents, such as, donors, prospects, trustees, and faculty and staff;
          • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills;
          • Demonstrated writing skills associated with proposals, solicitation letters, etc.;
          • Ability to interact positively with a wide range of constituencies in person, via telephone, email and in writing;
          • Strong interpersonal skills necessary to build relationships with internal and external constituents;
          • Ability to handle highly personal information and maintain confidentiality;
          • Excellent research, writing and interpersonal communication skills;
          • Familiarity with CRM fundraising software; and
          • Possess understanding and the ability to articulate, the accomplishments and goals of a complex organization.

          Preferred Qualifications:

          • Significant (generally six - nine years) experience in major gifts fundraising, preferably in higher education;
          • Skill in Salesforce; and
          • Familiarity with MicroStrategy, or similar reporting platform.

                About the Position:

                As an integral member of the University Advancement team, the Director of Prospect Management and Research is responsible for implementing a comprehensive program of research including the identification and qualification of prospects sufficient to support university-wide fundraising goals, through prospect research performed with the highest standards of quality, confidentiality and accuracy.

                This position leads two teams, prospect research and prospect management, which are responsible for delivering insightful, actionable research and for developing systems that ensure fundraisers have robust portfolios to support major, principal, and planned giving strategies.

                This role works closely with development officers and senior advancement leadership to align donor prospects with institutional priorities, drive prospect pipeline growth, and facilitate data-informed decision-making across all phases of donor engagement.

                Responsibilities:

                Prospect Research
                • Provide high-level, detailed research and analysis on individuals, corporations, and foundations using a wide variety of biographical, organizational, and financial sources, including online database services, websites, library and government sources, and other external repositories of public information;
                • Analyze and synthesize accumulated information to assess financial capacity, affinity, philanthropic tendencies, etc;
                • Compose documents (profiles, mini-bios, prospect lists, and research in support of events) using style, grammar and content appropriate to specific audiences;
                • Interpret and translate complex financial, legal, and corporate language into easily comprehensible terms, while adhering to University standards of discretion and confidentiality;
                • Attends Advancement strategy meetings to provide data-driven analysis to inform action plans for donors and prospects;
                • Leads the analysis of current donor pools of the fundraising officers and recalibrates to help meet the fundraising goals, and analyzes data to search for new prospects;
                • Consolidates large amounts of information gleaned from web sites, proprietary databases, analytics, and other sources, into concise, properly formatted research profiles/reports that provides critical intelligence to inform decision-making of engagement and solicitation strategies;
                • Assists the Vice President for Advancement and Alumni Relations with preparation of research reports and other documents for the Office of the President, and external Boards (i.e. Board of Trustees, Board of Visitors, and Alumni Association);
                • Identifies and recommends high-capacity individual and corporate and foundation donor prospects to select departmental staff and donor/prospect strategy discussions;
                • Develops an expert understanding of the institution's donor/prospect management and business intelligence systems with an emphasis on donor/prospect identification, including use of data extraction and reporting tools;
                • Responsible for developing and conducting training to introduce new processes, procedures, and initiatives that facilitate improved prospect research services; and
                • Actively involved in industry specific organizations, such as the Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement and the Council on the Advancement and Support of Education, in order to share knowledge and keep abreast of industry best practices and trends.
                Prospect Management
                • Develop policies, procedures, and best practices for portfolio development, moves management, and pipeline reporting;
                • Analyzes constituencies (market areas, affinity-based, etc.) to identify and prioritize donors and prospects, and completes analyses to ascertain the organization's strength and fundraising viability in particular sectors;
                • Makes data-driven recommendations to increase overall philanthropic support and works cooperatively with gift officers and prospect management staff in the management of officer portfolios with strategic emphasis on effectively moving top prospects and donors through the fundraising cycle; and
                • Works collaboratively with fundraisers and university leaders and the Advancement team to monitor progress toward fundraising goals through performance analytics, works on all data and gift processing systems, and contributes to defining policies and procedures about how the system will be used to support fundraising operations.
                Supervision of Staff
                • Manages job duties and performance; communicates a clear and consistent message regarding goals to produce desired results, develops professional development and training plans for staff, and holds staff accountable to meet commitments and follow GMU's policies;
                • Responsible for setting goals for performance and deadlines in ways that comply with the university's plans and vision and communicating them to subordinates;
                • Organize workflow and ensuring that employees understand their duties or delegated tasks;
                • Monitor employee productivity and providing constructive feedback and coaching; Receive complaints and resolving problems;
                • Maintain timekeeping and personnel records;
                • Disseminate information from upper management to employees and vice versa;
                • Prepare and submitting performance evaluations;
                • Determine rewards and promotions based on performance;
                • Hire and train new employees;
                • Ensure adherence to legal and university policies and procedures and undertaking disciplinary actions if the need arises;

                Required Qualifications:
                • Master's degree in related field;
                • Extensive (a minimum of 10 years) experience producing profiles, analysis, and reporting to drive fundraising strategies and support organizational priorities;
                • Significant experience consolidating large amounts of information into concise, properly formatted research products, including profiles, mini-bios, and prospect lists, that provide critical intelligence to inform engagement and solicitation strategies;
                • Significant experience proactively identifying and verifying new prospects by utilizing a wide range of resources, including both proprietary and third-party databases;
                • Significant experience in prospect and pipeline management and development;
                • Considerable supervisory experience (generally three - five years);
                • Significant knowledge of prospect management processes including significant knowledge of prospect tracking and management through the development cycle;
                • Significant knowledge of current trends in prospect research;

University Career Services (UCS), a unit within the Division of University Life (UL), is the centralized career center for George Mason University (Mason), serving 40,000 undergraduate and graduate students. UCS is dedicated to helping students identify and pursue opportunities where they can make a positive impact in a complex and quickly evolving world. In partnership with our strong network of employers, alumni, and faculty, we are able to break down barriers and successfully connect students with meaningful opportunities in their industries of interest to help them reach their full potential and advance not only themselves socio economically, but their families too. Existing services and programs include one-on-one appointments, career exploration, industry-specific programs, career fairs, experiential learning opportunities and graduate school preparation.

                                        About the Position:

                                        Provides career advising virtually and in-person for students/alums on all aspects of their career development including goal setting, career planning, and internship/job searching to increase students' career readiness and post-graduation outcomes. Includes career counseling in complex areas that require specialized expertise, such as career assessments, mid-life transitions, balancing work and family, imposter syndrome, international student hiring in the U.S., etc. Incorporates depth of knowledge in assigned career fields to educate students/alums about industry-specific recruiting/hiring trends, top employers, application processes, and changing workplace norms. Ability to support students at distributed campuses (e.g., Fuse at Mason Square (Arlington) and SciTech (Manassas) through in person meetings, workshops and other career related events.

                                        Responsibilities:

                                        • Provides career advising to students/alums representing a broad range of career concerns including:
                                          • Choosing/changing majors;
                                          • Choosing/changing careers and planning for graduate school; and
                                          • Interprets vocational assessment instruments (e.g., Strong Interest Inventory, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Skillscan Driver, CliftonStrengths);
                                        • Assists students in exploring career options and identifying sources of experiential learning to further clarify their career and industries of interest and to develop necessary skills/knowledge;
                                        • Provides advising to students/alums interested in the assigned career fields (Technology, Engineering, etc) and educates students on how to research employers, network, and engage in the internship/job search process using current technology;
                                        • Serves as center specialist on assigned industry areas, maintaining current information on recruiting practices, timelines, and industry trends;
                                        • Educates and prepares students on the specifics of their job/internship search strategy, including document review, networking techniques, interview preparation, and salary negotiation;
                                        • Prepares and updates annual outreach workshops and presentations for various campus audiences, delivers as requested;
                                        • Assists students in leveraging the use of social media and other technology in their search strategy;
                                        • Uses career management system (e.g., Handshake) to track all interactions with students/alums and to track their progress;
                                        • Compiles and understands data to evaluate and address students needs in a timely fashion;
                                        • Develops content for and conduct workshops, career panels and training sessions on a variety of career topics to educate and prepares students for the world of work;

                                        • Contributes to UCS strategic plan development and implementation; and
                                        • Participates in all-staff meetings, trainings and symposia for UCS and the division.

                                        Required Qualifications:

                                        • Knowledge of career development theories and job search strategies;
                                        • Demonstrated proficiency in designing and delivering presentations, virtually and in-person;
                                        • Familiarity with career assessments (e.g., Strong Interest Inventory, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, SkillScan Driver, Clifton Strengths);
                                        • Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively on team projects/initiatives;
                                        • Demonstrated commitment and ability to work with diverse populations; and
                                        • Prior experience in a higher education setting counseling/advising students on academic, career, internship, and job search issues, or in human resources/talent acquisition working in college recruiting.

                                        Preferred Qualifications:

                                        • Masters degree or equivalent combination of education and experience;
                                        • Knowledge of majors/careers in Technology and Engineering;
                                        • Experience working with international students;
                                        • Knowledge of career management systems (e.g., Handshake);
                                        • Proficiency in using career assessments (e.g., Strong Interest Inventory, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Skillscan Driver, CliftonStrengths);
                                        • Ability to research and quickly develop knowledge of employer recruiting strategies, job market trends;
                                        • Experience working in relevant professional environments; and
