Hazardous materials Technicians are individuals who respond to releases or potential releases for the purpose of stopping the release. They assume a more aggressive role than a first responder at the operations level in that they will approach the point of release in order to plug, patch or otherwise stop the release of a hazardous substance.
Primary Responsibilities and Daily Duties
The role of a HAZMAT Technician goes far beyond simply handling chemicals. It's a job that requires a thorough understanding of the properties of the materials they work with, as well as the regulations in force for their management. These professionals must also be equipped to respond to emergencies, such as accidental spills, and be able to advise other professionals and the general public on best handling and disposal practices.
· Identification and classification: Recognize and classify hazardous materials according to their composition and level of risk.
· Safe storage: Ensure that materials are stored under appropriate conditions to prevent any risk of leakage, incompatibility or contamination.
· Handling: Use appropriate PPE and techniques to handle hazardous materials, to minimize minimizing risks of all kinds;
· Disposal: Organize and supervise the safe disposal of materials, whether by incineration, recycling or other approved methods.
· Emergency response: Respond rapidly to incidents or accidents involving hazardous materials, implementing response protocols to contain and manage a situation.
· Advice and training: Provide advice to colleagues, companies and the general public on the safe handling of hazardous materials, and offer training when required.
· Regulatory watch: Stay aware and keep up to date on the latest regulations and standards in hazardous materials management.
· Emergency response: In emergency situations like transportation accidents or industrial spills, HAZMAT Technicians often work under pressure in collaboration with other emergency services to manage and mitigate risks.
Required Skills and Qualities
HAZMAT Technicians must understand and be able to implement their Emergency response plan, have a working knowledge of the Incident Command System, be able to work in the proper PPE, proficient in contamination assessment, decontamination and operating within an approved Incident Action Plan.
Training and qualifications
HAZMAT Technicians are trained to the 29 CFR 1910.120 (q)(6)(iii) standard. Hazardous materials Technicians shall have received at least 24 hours of training equal to the first responder operations level and in addition have competency in the following areas and the employer shall so certify:
(A) Know how to implement the employer's emergency response plan.
(B) Know the classification, identification and verification of known and unknown materials by using field survey instruments and equipment.
(C) Be able to function within an assigned role in the Incident Command System.
(D) Know how to select and use proper specialized chemical personal protective equipment provided to the hazardous materials Technician.
(E) Understand hazard and risk assessment techniques.
(F) Be able to perform advance control, containment, and/or confinement operations within the capabilities of the resources and personal protective equipment available with the unit.
(G) Understand and implement decontamination procedures.
(H) Understand termination procedures.
(I) Understand basic chemical and toxicological terminology and behavior.
Essential technical skills and soft skills
· Knowledge of hazardous materials: HAZMAT Technicians need a thorough understanding of the different categories of hazardous materials, their properties and associated risks.
· Mastery of regulations: Up-to-date knowledge of applicable local regulations concerning the storage, transport and disposal of hazardous materials;
· Laboratory skills: Hamzat Technicians must perform tests, analyze samples and use laboratory equipment as required.
· Communication skills: HAZMAT Technicians may need to explain complex information clearly and effectively to a variety of audiences, including colleagues, managers and the general public.
· Problem solving: It is also necessary to be able to quickly assess a situation, identify potential solutions and act decisively.
· Adaptability: The unpredictable nature of hazardous materials incidents means that HAZMAT Technicians must be able to adapt quickly to changing situations.
