    Recent advances at the European XFEL have led to lasing in a cavity-based X-ray free-electron laser oscillator (XFELO). This milestone opens new opportunities for X-ray generation and high-precision experiments. To advance the XFELO program to the next level, we are seeking a highly motivated Precision Mechanics Design Engineer to support a joint team of engineers and scientists from European XFEL and DESY.
    For our Mechanical Engineering group we are looking for an

    The Position Contribute to the development, realization, and commissioning of ultra-precision mechanical systems for the new phase of the XFELO project Perform computer-aided engineering tasks, including concept development, detailed mechanical design, structural and thermal assessment, and design optimization of mechanical components and assemblies Take responsibility for the production and procurement of mechanical components, as well as for the assembly, testing, and installation of the designed mechanical systems Participate in shift work in the control room during experimental testing and commissioning of XFELO mechanical systems with beam Analyze technical experimental data, document results, and contribute to publications, internal reports, and technical notes. Requirements Master's degree in mechanical engineering, applied physics, or an equivalent discipline Initial experience in mechanical design, preferably in a scientific, research, or other high-technology environment Understanding of mechanism design, structural mechanics, and thermal aspects relevant to precision mechanical systems; familiarity with UHV requirements is an advantage Ability to understand technical requirements, develop design concepts, and propose feasible mechanical solutions Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, combined with creativity, motivation, and a hands-on approach Experience with 3D CAD modeling and the preparation of engineering drawings; experience with Siemens NX would be beneficial Experience with numerical simulation and FEA tools such as Ansys and/or COMSOL Good written and spoken English and the ability to work successfully in an international and interdisciplinary team

The diverse scientific facilities at European XFEL enable scientists from across the globe to carry out a wide range of experimental techniques.
    The Lighthouse Visitor Centre at European XFEL informs visitors about the facility and its research. Within the Lighthouse, the Xcool Lab is a place for extracurricular education and consists of two school labs, one for physics and one for molecular biology and chemistry. School classes can come for one day and attend one of our courses, usually from 9 am to around 3/4:30 pm. They will perform different experiments, present their results and discuss the science behind. As a student assistant you will work one full day per week.

    The Position The successful candidate will: Work as a tutor in the Xcool Lab working closely with the teaching and outreach staff Prepare experiments before the start of a Xcool Lab day Teach, supervise and support school students in doing experiments Help with summary and discussions of experimental results Ensure safe working environments for students under supervision of responsible Xcool Lab staff Guide tours of the exhibition and experiment hall, providing information and answering questions Possibly contribute to new and further development of materials and experiments Possibly contribute to outreach programmes and events and help out at the information desk in the Lighthouse Requirements Currently studying towards a Bachelor or Master in the subjects of biology, molecular biosciences, biochemistry, microbiology, chemistry or a related field for at least one more year (please indicate the expected completion date of your studies in the application). Studying in a course targeted at future teachers (Lehramt) is an advantage, but not mandatory. Practical laboratory experience with the following experimental techniques: PCR, agarose gel electrophoresis, restriction enzyme digests Experience with some of the following would be an asset: UV-visible spectrophotometry, bacterial transformations, bacteria culture, DNA extraction, practical experience with bioinformatics tools, particularly sequence analysis, primer design or structural biology models Ability to communicate concepts in molecular biology and chemistry in an easy-to-understand way Organisational and communication and problem-solving skills Ability to work in a team, independence, sense of responsibility Fluency in German (C1) and a working knowledge of English A certain degree of flexibility on weekdays (one working day per week; the specific day may vary from week to week)
