JOB SUMMARY
We are seeking a Cardiac Sonographer to join our large, academically focused, and team-oriented echo lab at Duke University Hospital. As a member of our team, you'll perform advanced cardiovascular imaging across ambulatory and inpatient settings-including critical care units and procedural spaces-and contribute to the diagnosis and treatment of some of the most complex heart conditions in the region.
You'll gain hands-on experience with heart transplant patients, adult congenital heart disease, left ventricular assist devices, ECMO, Impella, TAVR, TEER, and even total artificial hearts, while learning from and collaborating with nationally recognized cardiovascular experts.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform a variety of echocardiographic procedures, including 2D, 3D, Doppler, Transesophageal Echocardiograms (TEE), Stress Echos, and strain imaging in both routine and emergency settings. Deliver services across ambulatory clinics, inpatient floors, ICU, and procedural areas. Evaluate pathology following current ASE, ACC, and lab-specific guidelines. Analyze patient medical records to obtain history and inform tailored imaging. Operate and maintain advanced ultrasound equipment, report malfunctions, and perform preventive maintenance. Prepare preliminary reports and compare with previous studies to assist interpretation by cardiologists. Participate in quality improvement activities and IAC-Echo reaccreditation processes. Administer general anesthetics to render patients insensible to pain during surgical, obstetrical, and other medical procedures; take necessary remedial action to aspirate secretions from throat larynx and trachea as required. Determine, set up and prepare necessary drugs, supplies and equipment for the administration of anesthetics; assemble gas machine and test to insure proper functioning; ensure availability of proper type blood for emergency use. Study patient records to determine probable effects of anesthetic on patient; monitor vital signs during course of procedure; take necessary action to ensure a near normal physiological status of the patient. Prepare patients for anesthesia to include explaining procedures and positioning patient on operating room table; record condition of patient and type of anesthetic used on patient's chart. Assist in moving patient from operating room to recovery area; check patient periodically and take remedial measures to alleviate unfavorable post anesthesia effects as required. Supervise and instruct student nurse anesthetists in the administration of general anesthetics; assist in evaluating clinical performance and progress; instruct residents, interns and allied health students in the procedures and techniques of anesthesiology. Provide drug information and educate providers, caregivers, patients and students regarding medications and their proper use and monitoring.
Oversee and monitor all aspects of the medication process; collect data and present reports and recommendations regarding issues with the medication systems.
Ensure that appropriate medications are available for patients and properly procured, prepared, stored and maintained.
Supervise the process and technical personnel who assist in preparation, maintenance and dispensing of drugs and supplies.
Provide support, education and oversight for investigational medications for patients; provide information regarding their preparation, labeling and availability within the medication system; maintain appropriate and required records and documentation for investigational drugs.
Provide specialized pharmaceutical services to improve drug usage and therapeutic outcomes including advising physicians on issues concerning drug therapy, the inherent toxicity of drugs and side effects, as well as assisting in the prescription of appropriate doses.
Contributes to the education of students and pharmacy residents.
Maintain liaison relationships with medical and nursing staff; provide timely information pertaining to pharmaceutical supplies, drug usage and compatibility, state and federal regulations regarding drug controls, and Joint Commission standards.
Conduct and evaluate medication histories, assess compliance and suggest modifications so as to achieve desired outcomes; instruct patients in the proper use of prescribed drugs; participate in patient care rounds with multidisciplinary teams to evaluate patient progress.
Individualize medication regimens using sound principles, accounting for pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic variations in drug absorption, distribution, metabolism and elimination with responsibility for establishing and continually improving the delivery of pharmaceutical care to patients within areas of direct responsibility and assisting others in the department with the same.
Conduct and participate in research including, but not limited to, performing as the primary investigator or co-investigator for research programs which will impact on the delivery of quality care or examine the pharmacoeconomic impact of providing care to the patients in the Duke Health System.
