This role represents a foundational hire in the market, with the opportunity to combine technical excellence with project leadership, client development, and long-term team growth. The ideal candidate brings initiative in client development, project management, and contributing to the expansion of the structural practice. The position would involve producing structural designs, analyses, and permit documents for a variety of building types, including steel, concrete, post-tensioned concrete, and wood structures. This position reports to the Principal-in-Charge of the Charlotte office, with technical oversight from the Chief Structural Engineer. The Structural Engineer is responsible for: Working with the structural team to deliver engineering solutions and construction documents on multiple projects, on budget and on schedule Coordinating structural team activities necessary to complete projects, including supervising and checking the work of structural designers and sub-consultants Designing structural systems for multi-family, commercial, institutional, and manufacturing facilities. Managing and leading client projects as they pertain to structural work, including scope development, fee input, scheduling, and coordination with internal and external stakeholders Coordinating technical project requirements with project team members, including clients, project managers, designers, and engineers, as well as other disciplines Leading client communication with confidence, including meetings, coordination, and issue resolution Identifying, developing, and supporting new business opportunities, including participation in proposals, client meetings, and relationship development Helping establish standards, workflows, and best practices for a growing structural team in the Charlotte market Mentoring junior staff and helping to build team capabilities as the department expands Taking ownership of project outcomes, including quality, financial performance, and client satisfaction, with awareness of project profitability Professional Growth and Leadership Opportunity: Demonstrates initiative to take ownership of projects and client relationships Interest in contributing to business development and helping establish and grow DEVITA’s structural presence in the Charlotte region Ability to lead project teams and coordinate across disciplines Potential to grow into a formal leadership role as the structural group expands Qualifications: Minimum 5 years' engineering experience; 8+ years preferred to include engineer-of-record responsibilities on a variety of project types B.S. degree in civil, structural, or related field of engineering Professional Engineering licensure required, with the ability to become licensed in multiple states Structural Engineering (SE) licensure preferred Demonstrated project management experience, with exposure to client development or business development activities preferred Experience with mentoring less experienced staff preferred Experience with a variety of structural systems including steel, concrete, wood, and masonry Post-tension and podium design experience preferred Proven ability to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment Proficiency in REVIT preferred Strong computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook Candidates seeking a purely technical production role without client or project leadership responsibilities may find this position is not the right fit This role is well-suited for an engineer who is ready to move beyond execution and take an active role in shaping projects, client relationships, and the growth of a practice
