This role is crucial in maintaining the highest standards of clinical practice, ensuring strict adherence to regulatory requirements, and promoting operational efficiency throughout the inpatient pharmacy. The Pharmacist Supervisor oversees the orientation and training of pharmacy staff, ensuring that team members remain competent and compliant with relevant standards and regulations. The supervisor is tasked with evaluating workflow processes, addressing and resolving operational challenges as they arise, and supporting efficient departmental operations-all with the goal of delivering consistent, high-quality pharmaceutical care. This position involves direct supervision of staff pharmacists, technicians, and interns. The Pharmacist Supervisor is responsible for coaching team members, providing ongoing feedback, and conducting performance evaluations. Additional duties include managing training and development initiatives for direct reports. The supervisor may also make recommendations concerning personnel actions such as hiring, termination, promotion, disciplinary measures, leaves of absence, work scheduling, and performance reviews, all in accordance with established hospital policies. Beyond supervisory functions, the Pharmacist Supervisor is expected to fulfill all responsibilities associated with the role of a clinical generalist pharmacist. Clinical generalist pharmacists deliver comprehensive pharmaceutical care by integrating drug distribution and clinical services. All activities are performed in compliance with State Board of Pharmacy regulations and other applicable regulatory agencies, including the maintenance of an active pharmacist license in good standing. The pharmacist is responsible for reviewing and verifying medication orders and completing the final check for medication dispensing. The pharmacist monitors patient drug therapies, provides drug information, and promotes medication safety. The pharmacist supports and supervises the pharmacy technicians. In the absence of the pharmacy manager, the pharmacist may be required to assume the essential responsibilities and perform the duties of the pharmacy manager. Calculates dosage based on mg/kg and verifies patient allergy information prior to dispensing medications. Intervenes with physicians when medication order is not appropriate for the patient. Documents intervention in computer system or on hardcopy of prescription Dispenses medication safely and accurately for the patient. Appropriately labels all medications prior to dispensing. Clinical Skills Collaborates with patient, caregivers, and other healthcare professionals. Attends educational programs and reads material relevant to pharmacy and health care to keep abreast of current information. Maintains continuing pharmaceutical education requirements as mandated by the State Board of Pharmacy and Joint Commission Serves as a resource for nurses and physicians with drug related questions, and actively seeks to provide the most up-to-date drug information to their customers by utilizing drug references appropriate to age. Provides pharmacological information by answering questions and requests of health care professionals and counseling patients on drug therapies. Drug Information Knowledgeable of the drug information resources available, including LexiComp and Micromedex. Provides accurate drug information to health care providers when called upon. Makes clinical decisions based on drug information provided. Knowledgeable in pediatric specific dosing and works to ensure that medications are dispensed accurately and efficiently. Pharmacy Functions Responsible for preparing and compounding medications, checking doses, giving pharmacological information to multidisciplinary health care team, and monitoring patient drug therapies. Prepares medications by reviewing and interpreting physician orders and detecting therapeutic incompatibilities. Ensures that prescriptions are filled accurately and in a timely manner with respect to workflow. Completes pharmacy operational requirements by organizing and directing technicians' workflow, verifying their preparation and labeling of pharmaceuticals, and verifying order entries, charges, and inspections. Ensures the safe and appropriate processing and delivering of medications to patients. Compliance Works under supervision of the managers following established policy and procedures set forth by the hospital and Pharmacy Department. Adheres to safety practices in order to ensure quality care for patients Maintains biannual and annual competencies for USP guidelines Shows familiarity with pharmacy practice settings, legal requirements and limitations, prescription information and calculations, drug identification and generic equivalents, drug manufacturing, packaging and labeling information, and proper drug handling and storage practices Leadership Skills Oversees the duties of the technicians to ensure the team is working efficiently and effectively.
