    How you'll contribute

    A Registered Nurse (RN) who excels in this role:

    Appropriately performs duties of triage nurse when assigned including identifying emergent patients and performing the quick triage process facilitating patient flow, and hourly waiting room checks. Provides primary nursing care to all patients assigned, functioning within a team, throughout the length of stay in the department. Accurately identifies arrhythmias and provides intervention according to established procedures. Anticipates arrhythmias and complications based on knowledge of pathophysiology takes appropriate actions as needed and communicates information to physicians in a timely manner. Demonstrates an ability to start IV's, administer medications and IV fluids, assess patient's response and titrate dosages as per physician order. Demonstrates an ability to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation in the ED, functions as code nurse at "CPA" situation within the hospital and provides needed cart exchange. Manages critically ill patients during transfer to other departments or health care facilities. Give appropriate report to provide continuity of care. Regularly tests monitoring equipment/alarm systems to ensure proper functioning when needed. Demonstrates a complete knowledge of the location, care and operation of all ED equipment. Demonstrates appropriate safety precautions (e.g. with invasive line, during defibrillation, etc.) and utilizes infection control practices to minimize incidence of nosocomial infections. Participates in special procedures and examinations performed by the physician, prepares the patient and provides emotional support, as required. Consistently assesses the nursing care provided in the critical care areas and identifies any problems or needs for improvement. Always assesses the patient's condition utilizing the nursing process and professional judgment in individualizing emergency nursing care. Always documents observations and interventions, including medication and treatment therapies. Always assesses the patients' immediate needs and priorities patient care accordingly upon arrival to the emergency room, obtains pertinent patient history. Notify family/S.O. of patient's progress and includes them in plan of care, whether admitted or discharged if applicable, i.e. minors or POA's. Participates in bedside change of shift report. Ensures that the standards of the emergency nursing practice are maintained. Maintain assessment, knowledge and intuition skills when triaging patients. Continuously assesses and improves the performance of care and service provided. Orients and mentors new members of the team in the department.

    What we're looking for
    Applicants should be graduates of an RN program and hold a current nurse's license in the state of Pennsylvania or a current multistate license (MSL) from compact member states/territories. Additional requirements include:

    Associate's degree is required; a Bachelor's degree is preferred. Basic Life Support (BLS). Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) or obtained within 6 months. Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or obtained within 1 year. Basic Trauma Nurse Course (BTNC) or equivalent training (ATCN, TCRN, TNCC) obtained within 1 year of hire is required.

    Medical/Surgical offers a team environment with extra support staff such as (CNA's, MA's, Nurse Externs, MT's). Working hours are flexible and custom to each individual. Employees are always willing to help each other and work as a team. Typical patient to nurse ratio is 5:1.

    How you'll contribute

    A Registered Nurse (RN), who excels in this role: Demonstrated effective utilization of nursing process as basis for nursing practices. Develops an individualized care plan to meet the patient's physical, emotional and psychological needs of each patient. Plans appropriate nursing intervention, regularly evaluates the patient's response to care and regularly reviews and updates to reflect changing needs. Develops a discharge plan with the physician, patient, and family and works to prepare patient for discharge. Completes discharge instruction record as per physician direction and reviews information with patient/family to assure knowledge of self-care in a timely manner. Completes transfer and obtains appropriate consents when patient is transferred to another facility and gives complete report to care giver who will be accepting responsibility for care of patient. Completes education record and/or transfer record in EMR. Demonstrates effectiveness in coordinating care, identifying needs and making appropriate referrals. Demonstrate clinical competence in caring for patients and provides care according to hospital policies, procedures, and standards of practice. Administer medications and IV therapies accurately in a safe and effective manner, monitors effect identifies and reports any adverse effects. Educates patients on new medications, provides info on reason for med and adverse effects to watch for. Accurately accounts for narcotics as per procedures and documents all medications administered. Recognizes errors and adverse reactions and reports them in a timely manner. Functions according to the State Nurse Practice Act and delivers care that is consistent with the policies, procedures and standards of Conemaugh Nason Medical Center. Provides for patient safety and security needs by maintaining a clean and safe environment and placing call bell within patients reach at all times. Demonstrates understanding of hospital infection control procedures and utilizes appropriate handwashing and universal precautions at all times. Promptly answers patient call lights and fulfills patient request as soon as possible. Makes patient rounds hourly and as needed to assess patient needs. Maintains patient care equipment, reports malfunctions and requisitions service appropriately. Utilizes effective communication skills in interpersonal relationships with patients, family members and other members of the health care team to maintain an environment in which staff work together. Communicates pertinent patient care information at the change of shift via BSSR. Communicates significant changes in patient's condition to the team leader, physician and supervisor in a timely manner. Monitors patients hourly or every 2 hours. Regularly reports complaints of patients, visitors and physicians through personal action or referral to a higher authority. Completes and documents performance improvement activities, participates in problem identification and carries out actions to improve patient care. Demonstrates leadership abilities and assumes leadership role. Functions independently by demonstrating responsibility for the delivery of care to all assigned patients on the unit. Directs, supervises and evaluates care delivered by ancillary staff members. Serves as a professional role model for staff and a preceptor for new personnel. Manages conflict and frustration in a positive and constructive manner and accepts constructive criticism regarding own nursing judgments or actions. Utilizes appropriate lines of authority within the organizational structure. Demonstrates competence in assessing patient care needs and utilizing appropriate staff to provide for patient care. Uses supplies efficiently and with regard to both effectiveness and cost. Maintains an orderly and therapeutic environment by keeping patient rooms and nurses' station clean, safe, uncluttered, and free of unneeded supplies/equipment. Demonstrates accountability for personal and professional standards. Maintains current knowledge in area/s of present nursing practice, appropriate certification and completion of competencies for assigned unit. Demonstrates understanding of emergency and internal/external disaster plans as evidenced by appropriate response to these situations.     How you'll contribute

    A Registered Nurse (RN) who excels in this role:

    Makes decisions and judgments in preventing, analyzing, and resolving patient care concerns. Reports patient status refers problems when necessary and anticipates situations that prevent/minimize adverse outcomes. Maintains competency in patient sedation assessment and management. Maintains competency in Pain Assessment and management of pain. Maintains confidentiality of all patients, hospital, and employee-related information. Participates in Performance Improvement based activities and hospital based as directed. Demonstrates ability to adapt to various age specific patient populations. Understands and applies principles of aseptic technique. Provides patient assessment, education, intervention, documentation and management of patients while in the Cath Lab. Acts as a resource for the technicians, secretaries, and other staff. Assumes responsibility as team leader as assigned to assist with patient management, coordination of patient flow, delegation of duties. Assumes responsibility for patient care management and is the team leader during emergency call in cases. Performs the role of circulator or monitor during the Cath procedure. Cross train to scrub assistant. Provides input in the development of policies, procedures, quality control and marketing of the Cath Lab. Demonstrates ability to operate and maintain all equipment in accord with instructions, policies and procedures. Notifies the Cath Lab Manager and/or Charge RN of any problems with the equipment. Oversees the restocking of rooms to assure readiness for emergent cases. Responsible for cleaning Cath Lab, equipment and holding area between procedures according to infection control policy and procedures. Assumes responsibility, authority and accountability for clinical practice. Follows safety procedures and guidelines. Reports unsafe conditions. Maintains safe handling of hazardous and infectious materials in accordance with Hospital policy. Enters complete and accurate data into the established database. Uses all Cath Lab computer system for work related activities. Safeguards all computer information and maintains confidentiality. Proves ability to navigate all computer programs. Adheres to time scheduling exhibiting flexibility. Assumes on call responsibility, with required response time of 30 (thirty) minutes or less. Assists in OPSU and ICU/CCU area as directed. Assists with the performance of all lab procedures, including, and not limited to, cardiac pacemakers, TEE, and cardioversion procedures and recoveries. Demonstrates clinical competence in basic cardiac physiology/pathology, 12 lead EKG interpretation; physiologic monitoring (intra cardiac pressure waveform knowledge), pacemaker operations (implantable and external) and other radiographic equipment related to cardiac care. Management of critically ill patients during transfer to other health care facilities.
