The KDIS faculty have a key role in developing and implementing a program that serves as an incubator for new approaches and fosters a culture of inclusion, creativity, and continuous improvement. The department is housed in the new Robert Day Sciences Center.

    The candidate must demonstrate potential for establishing an active research program that involves undergraduate students, as evidenced by a track record of high-quality scholarship and a research statement that outlines a clear plan for their research effort at CMC. The candidate must also demonstrate potential for excellence in teaching through a thoughtful teaching statement and supporting evidence from prior teaching experiences.

    The teaching load at CMC is two courses per semester. The candidate will help develop and teach a two-semester foundational chemistry curriculum that will be taken by all Integrated Sciences majors and will include integration with the foundational curriculum in biology, physics, and computation. Additional teaching will include upper-division courses in organic chemistry and/or biochemistry, upper-division electives in the candidate's area of expertise in support of the department's three themes, and/or a natural science general education course taken by all CMC students.

    Integrated Sciences Laboratory/Animal Manager

    Job Details and Requirement:

    BASIC FUNCTION:

    The Integrated Sciences Laboratory/Animal Manager has dual functions as laboratory animal manager and Integrated Sciences laboratory manager. The anticipated start date for this position is August 1, 2025.

    As the laboratory animal manager (50%), this position will be responsible for overseeing the general operations of the Kravis Department of Integrated Sciences laboratory animal facilities, approximately 2,400 sq. ft., which will be used by five to six faculty members and their lab groups. This will include hiring and supervising student animal care workers; ordering supplies; managing inventory; maintaining records; communicating with faculty, veterinarians, the joint Claremont McKenna College and Harvey Mudd College IACUC; and ensuring standards of animal care and maintenance of the animal facility according to institutional, regional and federal regulation. This role will include some evening and weekend responsibilities.

    As a teaching laboratory manager (50%), this position will support the teaching of laboratories in Integrated Sciences. More information on courses can be found in the CMC catalog . This role will include preparation of materials for teaching laboratories, set-up and take-down of lab materials, aiding in the development and implementation of laboratory activities and providing assistance to students and faculty during the laboratory periods.

    DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
    • Ensure standards and document animal care and maintenance of the animal facility according to institutional, regional, and federal regulations.
    • Hire and supervise student animal care workers.
    • Manage animal care-related inventory and order supplies.
    • Communicate with faculty, veterinarians, and the joint Claremont McKenna College and Harvey Mudd College IACUC.
    • Work closely with department chair and faculty to support the development and operations of teaching laboratory curricula.
    • Set up, take down, and assist laboratory sessions; prepare laboratory reagents and other materials.
    • Provide administrative and operational support for teaching laboratories.
    • Maintain inventory for laboratory supplies, tools, and equipment.
    • Evaluate lab equipment as used on a daily/weekly/monthly basis for usability.
    • Oversee inventory control for lab equipment and re-order supplies as needed.
    Regular attendance is considered an essential job function; the inability to meet attendance requirements may preclude the employee from retaining employment.

    The successful candidate will also be able to perform the following essential functions:
    • Experience working within a laboratory environment and familiarity with laboratory safety measures.
    • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
    • Ability to manage multiple ongoing projects and shift between work duties seamlessly.

    QUALIFICATION STANDARDS & SKILLS:

    EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) in biology, physiology, neuroscience or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Master's degree (MA/MS) in biology, physiology, neuroscience or a related field preferred.

    EXPERIENCE: Three years relevant work experience. Full-time work experience in a laboratory setting including working with animals. Laboratory instructor or teaching assistant experience preferred.
