Role Summary
We are actively hiring a Field Surveyor – Lead for our Lafayette team. This is a mid-level role for a surveyor ready to take on independent field responsibility — serving as the sole field representative on assigned projects and, when needed, directly supervising a second field surveyor.
This is primarily an outdoor, field-based position. You should expect early starts, work across varied terrain and weather conditions, and travel to project sites throughout the region. Office time — for research, drafting, and calculations — complements but does not define the role.
Responsibilities
Serve as sole field representative on assigned projects, exercising independent professional judgment with minimal oversight.Managing your own schedule and equipment in the field independently.Arriving at project sites early to set up and execute field measurements, control traverses, and construction layout with precision and efficiency.Directly supervise and coordinate a second field surveyor when assigned, ensuring quality and site safety.Execute ALTA, boundary, topographic, construction layout, R/W, route, and control surveys across varied project types.Operate Trimble Robotic Total Stations, GPS/GNSS systems, and 3D scanners with proficiency.Perform survey research, drafting, and construction staking calculations using AutoCAD Civil 3D and Trimble Business Center.Maintain accurate field notes and project documentation; communicate findings clearly to project managers.Supporting unmanned aerial survey operations when applicable (FAA Part 107 certification a plus).Qualifications
Experience
3+ years of field surveying experience including boundary and ALTA surveys, construction layout, topographic and utility surveys, R/W or route surveys, and control networks. Prior experience working independently in the field without daily on-site supervision is strongly preferred.
Education & Certification
Degree or coursework in Land Surveying, Geomatics, or a closely related field is preferred. FS (Fundamentals of Surveying) certification is preferred or actively being pursued. The expected long-term goal for this role is PLS (Professional Land Surveyor) licensure — Chastain covers qualifying exam fees and provides full support toward that credential.
Technical Skills
Proficiency in Trimble Business Center, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and Microsoft Office. Working knowledge of Trimble Robotic Total Stations, GPS/GNSS systems, scanners, and field data collection systems. FAA Part 107 certification is a plus.
Leadership & Independence
Demonstrated ability to manage field work independently and coordinate the work of another surveyor. Strong professional judgment, communication, and reliability in the field are essential.
Physical Requirements
Extended outdoor work in all weather conditions across varied terrain. Must be able to stand, walk, and operate field equipment for extended periods. Valid driver's license required.

Responsibilities

Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Surveying, Geomatics, or Civil Engineering preferred.
Licensure
Illinois PLS required (out-of-state PLS with a path to reciprocity may be an acceptable alternative). Additionally, Indiana licensure, as well as licensure in neighboring states is desired as well.
Software & Tools
Experience and proficiency with Autodesk Civil 3D and Trimble Business Center (TBC), and with Trimble GPS/GNSS equipment and data collectors is all preferred, familiarity with these systems is essential. Experience with Bentley OpenRoads Designer (ORD) or MicroStation knowledge is a plus. Microsoft 365 proficiency expected.

This position will also include some Construction Inspecting duties out of our Decatur office. This role is responsible for construction oversight, contractor and client coordination, quantity calculations, material certifications, and field inspection/sampling on municipal streets/sidewalks, water, wastewater, storm sewer, and bikepath projects.

We are hiring a Project Engineer to join our land development team in Lafayette. You will work within a focused team of seven — four core members and three supplemental — on projects that typically involve two to three engineers, always including at least one PE. Experience
5+ years of hands-on experience with land development projects at a civil engineering firm in the United States, with a focus on site planning, design, and/or construction. Experience across commercial site development, residential subdivision, industrial projects, or stormwater design is particularly relevant. Candidates at the 5–7 year mark with demonstrated project lead experience and an active PE are strongly encouraged to apply.
Education
Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
Licensure
PE (Professional Engineer) license in Indiana is preferred. Candidates licensed in another state with a clear path to Indiana reciprocity will be considered. Candidates who have passed the FE exam and are actively accumulating PE-qualifying experience are also encouraged to apply. Chastain covers qualifying exam fees and supports the full licensure process.
Technical Skills
Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D and Microsoft 365 is required. Working knowledge of HydroCAD or StormCAD for drainage and stormwater design is a strong plus. Familiarity with federal, state, and local agency submittal requirements is an advantage.

Ability to build and maintain client relationships, communicate clearly with agency partners, and work collaboratively within a small project team. Candidates should be comfortable taking ownership of deliverables while also supporting and mentoring less experienced staff.

What You’ll Do as the Transportation Senior Project Manager
You will oversee and mentor multiple Project Managers across various offices while managing and tracking the department's backlog.
Manage client relationships, cultivating new business connections, and collaborating with the Business Development Team to identify IDOT PTB items to pursue.Managing PMs current IDOT Phase I, II or III engineering projects as well as County and Municipal Transportation projects.Build and maintain strong, long-term relationships with clients, ensuring satisfaction, retention, and alignment with business objectives.Monitor and manage the transportation department's backlog, ensuring accurate tracking, prioritization, and timely resolution to meet operational goals.What you will need to thrive in this role:
Licensure: Professional Engineer (PE) License in the state of Illinois or ability to obtain
Education: A Bachelors degree in Engineering (Civil Engineering is preferred)
Experience: 15+ years of experience working on IDOT roadway and bridge design projects, and managing/mentoring civil engineering staff
Location: Rockford, IL - Hybrid schedule is available
Software skills: Microsoft 365, MicroStation/Open Roads and Adobe (AutoCAD Civil 3D beneficial)
