This person will operate at the intersection of engineering, product, design, data, security, and operations, partnering directly with the CTO to turn complex, ambiguous company priorities into clear plans, operating rhythms, and shipped systems. You'll help orchestrate some of Charlie Health's most important technical initiatives: rebuilding core platforms, scaling AI-native workflows, improving clinical and operational systems, and ensuring our technology can support life-saving behavioral healthcare at national scale.

This is a high-leverage role for someone who can zoom from executive strategy to implementation details; who understands how modern software systems get built; and who can bring structure, urgency, and clarity to complex, regulated environments.

    What Success Looks Like

The CTO and technology leadership team have clearer visibility into priorities, tradeoffs, risks, and execution health.Cross-functional technical programs move faster because ownership, sequencing, and dependencies are explicit.Engineering, Product, Design, Data, Security, IT, Clinical, and Operations teams are better aligned on what matters most and why.AI-native ways of working become more consistent, practical, and embedded across the organization.Critical platform and systems initiatives are delivered with more rigor, less chaos, and stronger connection to client, clinician, and business outcomes.

We're a team of passionate, forward-thinking professionals eager to take on the challenge of the mental health crisis and play a formative role in providing life-saving solutions. If you're inspired by our mission and energized by the opportunity to increase access to mental healthcare and impact millions of lives in a profound way, apply today.

    Responsibilities

Partner directly with the CTO to define, operationalize, and track the highest-priority initiatives across Engineering, Product, Design, Data, Security, and IT.Drive execution of complex system builds from strategy through delivery, including platform rebuilds, workflow orchestration, internal tooling, AI-native products, data systems, and cross-functional infrastructure initiatives.Create and manage operating cadences across the technology organization, including planning cycles, roadmap reviews, program reviews, dependency tracking, executive updates, and decision forums.Translate ambiguous business and clinical needs into clear technical workstreams, owners, milestones, risks, and tradeoffs.Serve as a connective layer between technology and business teams, ensuring Engineering, Product, Clinical, Operations, Compliance, Legal, and Go-to-Market teams are aligned on priorities and sequencing.Identify and resolve cross-team blockers, especially where technical dependencies, operational process, compliance requirements, or change management could slow execution.Support AI-native transformation across the organization, helping teams adopt AI tools, agentic workflows, automation, and new product development patterns responsibly and effectively.Build lightweight but durable systems for visibility and accountability, including dashboards, planning artifacts, technical program documentation, and executive-ready reporting.Help mature the technology organization's planning, communication, and decision-making practices as Charlie Health continues to scale.Operate with urgency, judgment, and care in a mission-critical healthcare environment where system quality, reliability, privacy, and clinical impact matter.

    Requirements

8+ years of experience in technical program management, product operations, engineering operations, chief of staff, strategy & operations, product management, or a similar highly cross-functional role.Experience working directly with senior technical executives, ideally a CTO, VP Engineering, Head of Product, or equivalent.Demonstrated ability to orchestrate complex system builds involving multiple engineering teams, product stakeholders, data dependencies, operational workflows, and executive stakeholders.Strong technical fluency across modern software architecture, data systems, APIs, workflow automation, cloud infrastructure, AI/ML systems, and/or internal platform development.Experience working in a regulated industry such as healthcare, fintech, insurance, education, government, or another environment with meaningful privacy, security, compliance, or operational risk.Strong understanding of how AI-native teams work, including practical experience with LLMs, AI-enabled product development, automation, agentic workflows, or AI-assisted engineering/productivity tools.Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to synthesize technical complexity into crisp narratives, decisions, and executive updates.Highly organized and systems-oriented, with a track record of creating clarity in ambiguous, fast-moving environments.Strong analytical orientation; comfortable using data to inspect progress, identify bottlenecks, and drive better decisions.Low-ego, high-ownership operator who can influence without authority and build trust across technical and non-technical teams. Please note that this is an in-office position in Charlie Health's New York City office four days per week Monday through Thursday Benefits

    About the Role

AI FDE is a forward-deployed engineering team. Our customers are the people across Charlie Health who know a workflow best but cannot yet build software for it: Strategy, Clinical Operations, Admissions, Finance, Growth, People, and more. We sit with them and put AI to work on their highest-leverage workflows, whatever shape the right answer takes: a real internal app, an automation, a scheduled agent, or retiring a manual process outright. We run the platform that keeps what they build safe, and we measure success by the builder we leave behind, not the solution we ship.

As the Staff Forward Deployed Engineer leading AI FDE, you will own the team's roadmap and the platform behind it. Our paved road today is a vibe coding platform: a non-technical user completes the right training, builds a real application with AI, and ships it behind security controls, while Engineering keeps the rails safe. The platform will evolve as the tools change, but the bar stays fixed: idea to live in under a working day, without ever compromising guardrails. You will own those rails, run the engagements where we build with our customers, and own the training programs that decide who can build what.

This is a hands-on technical leadership role without direct reports. You lead through technical direction and the example of your own work. Most of your time goes to engagements, building alongside a customer, and the rest splits between the platform and training programs. We build with AI as the default: agents write most of the code, humans drive the product and review what ships, and the guardrails are what keep that safe in a HIPAA-regulated clinical business.

ResponsibilitiesLead the AI FDE team: its engagement model, operating cadence, and platform roadmap, in partnership with leadershipOwn the builder platform: the application templates, deployment pipelines, authentication, database, security scanning, and observability that make building safe by defaultRun forward-deployed engagements through their gates, from scoping the request, including saying no when an app is the wrong answer, to handing back a working solution and a builder who can change it without usDevelop the builder training and certification programs, from the leveled curriculum to the gates that decide who can ship what, while IT owns seats and tooling accessHold the guardrails that make the platform safe and patient data secureBuild with AI in front of non-technical users and make it teachable, modeling the skeptical review that keeps agent output safeGeneralize the second instance of any request into a template feature or a paved-road pattern rather than a second bespoke buildAssist in hiring and onboarding engineers to the team as it growsFeed engagement patterns and field notes back into the org's agentic toolingRequirements7+ years of software engineering experience, with a meaningful stretch spent working directly with customers or non-technical users (forward deployed, solutions, or product engineering close to the people who use what you build)You ship quick prototypes and MVPs that turn a vague workflow into a working tool in daysA teacher's instinct: you make technical concepts land for non-technical users without jargon or condescensionYou measure your success by what people can do without you, leaving a capable builder behind rather than a dependency on youSound judgment under pressure: you hold a security or compliance line when the person across from you is senior and in a hurry, and you recognize when a workflow is too high-stakes to live on a builder platform at allA bias toward action: you would rather ship a rough thing to a real user and iterate than perfect it in isolationFamiliarity with the agent tooling ecosystem: skills, MCPs, harnesses, and agent orchestration for software developmentYou build with AI agents daily, treat their output with skepticism, and turn the failure patterns you spot into checks and boundaries that raise quality over timeStrong communication and genuine empathy for how non-technical users actually workComfort owning a platform in a regulated environment, where guardrails are not optionalThis role requires 4 days per week in our NYC office (Flatiron District)Nice to HavesFounder, early-startup, or other generalist background where you owned a product end to end (a strong signal for this team)Healthcare or other experience engineering in a HIPAA-regulated environmentYou have built an internal platform, developer tooling, or a low-code or prototyping systemCurriculum, enablement, or developer-advocacy work where you grew other people's skillsFamiliarity with our tech stack: Python, TypeScript, React, Postgres, Terragrunt, and AWS LambdaBenefits
