    THE OPPORTUNITY

    Manhattan Justice Opportunities seeks to rethink justice in Manhattan and build a justice system that is more responsive to individuals’ and communities’ needs. Manhattan Justice is a centralized, court-based screening, resource, and referral hub that provides judges, prosecutors and defense attorneys at New York County Criminal Court and Supreme Court with a wide array of social service-based sentencing options in misdemeanor and felony cases. Manhattan Justice offers onsite case management, psycho-educational groups, and restorative justice programming, and provides referrals to community-based service providers for mental health, substance use, employment, primary health care services and more. These services, which are open to anyone who needs them—including mandated participants’ families and friends, and others affected by the criminal justice system—help people address underlying issues in their lives, build stability, and decrease their likelihood of further justice involvement. 

    Manhattan Justice is seeking a Social Worker to engage and assess program participants and connect them to a full range of wraparound services, including, community-based social services and evidence-based interventions. Reporting to the Clinical Supervisor, the Social Worker will be responsible for conducting assessments and intakes, making referrals to community-based service providers, offering comprehensive trauma-informed case management and individual counseling sessions, facilitating psychoeducational groups, and providing compliance monitoring for people with open misdemeanor and felony cases.

    An essential and dynamic feature of the Social Worker’s role will be close collaboration with the Manhattan Misdemeanor Alternative to Incarceration Court, a new problem-solving court.  The Social Worker will assess and prepare treatment recommendations for potential participants and provide long-term care coordination and compliance monitoring for a caseload of participants. Court-based social work is an exciting, unique, and demanding area of practice, and the Social Worker role involves navigating and constructively engaging with differing and, at times, competing stakeholder perspectives. 

    Responsibilities include but are not limited to: 

    Conduct intakes and clinical assessments for mandated and voluntary program participants; Develop treatment recommendations for potential participants to be shared with court stakeholders (judge, defense counsel, prosecutor and court staff), when necessary; Provide comprehensive, clinically-informed case management and individual counseling services to a caseload of participants charged with misdemeanor and felony offenses;  Facilitate and help to develop and/or revise curricula for a range of on-site psychoeducational groups and individual case management sessions; Provide referrals to community-based services that address issues such as substance use, mental health issues, trauma, domestic violence, housing, and educational/vocational needs; and other challenges in participants’ lives (e.g. family court cases and other civil legal issues); Manage and monitor compliance with treatment mandates, including care coordination with providers; Provide written and verbal compliance reports to legal parties and coordinate responses to non-compliance issues, including re-engaging participants and arranging return on warrants;  Provide crisis intervention and de-escalation, as needed; Assist with outreach to participants and defense attorneys to ensure all mandated participants are effectively engaged; Enter and maintain appropriate up-to-date participant information, including assessment, case management, attendance, and case outcome data; Provide clinical services as described above to program participants on a voluntary basis post-mandate; Facilitate coordinated service delivery from on-site agencies and community-based partners for mandated services and voluntary referrals; Collaborate closely with intake specialists, case managers, and social workers on the clinical team; Collaborate closely with staff at the Midtown Community Justice Center and other Center for Justice Innovation operating projects; Assist the Clinical Supervisor with the development and implementation of new initiatives; including best clinical practices, and appropriate evidence-based interventions; Participate in clinical group supervision, staff meetings, and trainings, as scheduled; Attend evening court and community-based events and meetings, as needed; and Additional tasks as necessary. 

    Qualifications:   

    LMSW, with a minimum of 3-4 years in criminal justice and/or related fields, such as healthcare, substance use and mental health treatment, homelessness and housing services, education, job training/workforce development, child welfare and family services, youth services, elder care services, domestic violence programming, sex offense treatment, and services for people with development disabilities, is required;Experience in a court or criminal justice settings, including working with incarcerated people, preferred;Knowledge and/or lived experience related to the criminal justice system and its impacts on communities; Experience with co-occurring disorders, trauma-informed and strengths-based approaches preferred; Commitment to being participant-centered and using holistic and strengths-based approaches, as well as the cultural humility to work with people from diverse backgrounds; Willingness and ability to work collaboratively with a variety of court personnel and on-site partner agencies in a high-pressure/fast paced work environment; Skill and openness to constructive engagement with differing and, at times, competing stakeholder perspectives; Excellent organization and time management skills; Strong writing and verbal communication skills; Bilingual (English and Spanish-speaking) preferred; and;SIFI eligible preferred.

    Compensation: The compensation range for this position is $57,500 - $75,700 and is commensurate with experience.

    THE OPPORTUNITY

    The Center for Justice Innovation is seeking a Social Worker to join a team of staff—including social workers, case managers, and a peer navigator—who work with defendants participating in the Manhattan Felony Alternative to Incarceration (ATI) Court. The Felony ATI Court, which is led by Administrative Judge Ellen Biben, seeks to forge a new response to individuals charged with felonies by linking them to community-based social services. The Court is the first of its kind, providing an innovative model for other jurisdictions seeking to develop and implement meaningful post-conviction sentencing options for individuals facing felony charges.

    Reporting to the Clinical Director of Felony ATI, the Social Worker will be part of a team that provides neutral, third-party assessments and case management services to the Felony Alternative to Incarceration (ATI) Court. The Social Worker will be responsible for conducting independent clinical assessments, providing referrals to community-based services, offering comprehensive clinical case management, and monitoring participant compliance.

    An essential and dynamic feature of the Social Worker’s role will be close collaboration with key stakeholders. The Social Worker will work regularly with the judge and court staff from New York Country Supreme Court who oversee the Felony ATI Court, as well as with other stakeholders, including the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office and New York City defense organizations. Court-based social work is an exciting, unique and demanding area of practice, and the Social Worker role involves navigating and constructively engaging with differing and, at times, competing stakeholder perspectives.

    Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    Conduct detailed risk-need profiles and clinical assessments for potential Felony ATI Court participants;Develop treatment recommendations for services for potential Felony ATI participants to court stakeholders (judge, defense counsel, prosecutor and court staff);Provide comprehensive, clinically-informed case management services to a caseload of pre-plea and court-mandated Felony ATI participants to help address issues such as substance use, mental health issues, trauma, domestic violence, housing and vocational needs, and other challenges in a participant’s life (e.g. new arrests, family court cases and other civil legal issues);Make appropriate community-based referrals for a variety of social service needs;Manage and monitor compliance with treatment mandates, including care coordination with providers;Provide written treatment updates for court stakeholders for all court-involved participants;Participate in regular interdisciplinary case conferences with court stakeholders;Coordinate with court stakeholders on any non-compliance issues and assist clients in getting back into compliance, including re-engaging clients, arranging return on warrants, and implementing graduated responses to encourage future compliance;Facilitate and help to develop and/or revise curricula for a range of on-site psychoeducational groups and individual case management sessions;Attend court on calendar days, as needed, to help clients navigate court and collaborate with court staff and stakeholders;Collaborate and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including the resource coordinator, prosecutors, defense attorneys, and other court and programmatic staff;Assist with toxicology testing and reporting, as needed;Provide crisis intervention and de-escalation, as needed;Provide voluntary referrals to community-based services, as needed;Establish and maintain linkages with community partners who can support program work;Assist the Clinical Director with the development and implementation of new initiatives; including best clinical practices, and appropriate evidence-based interventions;Enter and maintain appropriate up-to-date participant information, including assessment, case management, and case outcome data;Provide clinical services as described above to program participants on a voluntary basis post-mandate;Participate in clinical group supervision, staff meetings, and trainings, as scheduled;Attend evening community-based meetings and events, as needed; and;Assist with other programmatic and administrative tasks to support the Felony ATI Court’s activities, as needed.

    Qualifications:

    THE OPPORTUNITY

    Brooklyn Justice Initiatives (BJI) seeks to reengineer the experience of criminal court in Brooklyn, New York by providing judges and attorneys meaningful alternatives to bail, fines, and jail sentences. Operating out of Kings County Criminal Court and nearby satellite offices, Brooklyn Justice Initiatives is a team of social service providers, court-based resource coordinators, and others who seek to improve the quality of justice. By providing meaningful pre-trial supervised release and post-conviction sentencing options, Brooklyn Justice Initiatives seeks to use an arrest as a window of opportunity to change the direction of a participant’s life and avoid the harmful effects of incarceration.  

    Brooklyn Justice Initiatives Diversion team is seeking a Social Worker! While the Social Worker's primary focus will be with those engaged in our Alternatives to Incarceration (ATI) program, they will also be expected to provide occasional support for our pre-arraignment diversion program, Project Reset. Responsibilities include conducting intakes and assessments; providing comprehensive case management; offering individual counseling; facilitating psychoeducational or therapeutic groups; and supporting participants engaged in ATI and early diversion programming. The Social Worker will monitor participant engagement, send court date reminders, promote compliance with court conditions when applicable, submit progress and compliance updates to the court, and provide voluntary referrals and ongoing support beyond the initial mandate when appropriate.

    This position requires strong clinical judgment, flexibility in a fast-paced court environment, and the ability to build effective partnerships with legal system stakeholders and community-based providers. The ideal candidate will have 1-2 years of experience in social service settings; experience working in the criminal-legal system or with impacted individuals is preferred. Candidate must be a skilled writer and communicator, organized, able to work in a fast-paced multi-disciplinary setting, and maintain strong relationships with multiple agencies and stakeholders. They must be able to take initiative, work independently, and feel comfortable navigating multiple computer/online based systems simultaneously including online case management databases, Microsoft Office, Google Suites, Slack, Zoom, etc. Prior experience working with young adults, un-housed individuals, or those with mental health, substance use, or co-occurring disorders is a plus. Bi-lingual preferred.

    THE OPPORTUNITY

    The Center for Justice Innovation is seeking a Social Worker, Jail Diversion to join a team of clinicians who assess the clinical and services needs of defendants currently being held in pretrial detention. This will include coordinating closely with the Manhattan Felony Alternative to Incarceration (ATI) Court to identify and assess potential participants.     Reporting to the Senior Social Worker of Jail Diversion, the Social Worker, will be responsible for conducting independent clinical assessments and drafting treatment recommendations for defendants being held in pretrial detention. The Social Worker will conduct these assessments and complete these treatment plans according to a strict timeline, ensuring that the process is completed as quickly as possible. The goal is to provide information that will enable defense attorneys, prosecutors, and judges to resolve cases as quickly as possible, significantly reducing the time people spend in pretrial detention.

    An essential and dynamic feature of the Social Worker’s role will be close collaboration with key external stakeholders. They will work regularly with New York City defense organizations and other defense attorneys, prosecutors from the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office and the Office of the Special Narcotics Prosecutor, staff at the Department of Correction and Correctional Health Services, the judge and court staff from New York County Supreme Court who oversee the Felony ATI Court, and an array of community-based alternative to incarceration and community-based providers. Court-based clinical work is an exciting, unique and demanding area of practice, and the Social Worker role involves navigating and constructively engaging with differing and, at times, competing stakeholder perspectives.

    THE OPPORTUNITY

    Midtown Community Justice Center seeks a Community Navigator for the Community First program. The aim of Community First is to create an upstream diversion from arrest and justice system involvement by building supportive relationships with people in need of services and creating linkages to mental health services, housing support, substance use services, and other kinds of social services as needed. Community First is a partnership between Midtown Community Justice Center, Breaking Ground, Fountain House, Times Square Alliance, Housing Works, and Ryan Health.

    Reporting to the Clinical Director, the Community Navigator will be tasked with engaging community members frequenting the Times Square and Midtown Manhattan area who are experiencing housing insecurity or homelessness and often have co-occurring behavioral health challenges. In keeping with the Community First model, the Navigator will build trusting relationships with those individuals, and facilitate linkages to social services and other community-based resources. The Community Navigator will also work with clients of MCJC’s onsite programs, including court-based and diversion programs, who are unstably housed. Community Navigators are peers who share some lived experience with clients and use their own experience in establishing trusted relationships.

    Responsibilities include but are not limited to:  Perform community outreach in the Times Square area and broader Midtown community; Identify and build relationships with individuals who are experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity, substance use disorders, mental health crises, or in need of other supportive services in the Midtown area;  Work with a diverse population in a mutually respectful manner, using a strengths-based and client-centered approach; Develop and maintain working knowledge of local resources for health and wellness as well as public benefits;Develop and maintain relationships with local businesses that can provide additional support (e.g., employment opportunities, access to bathrooms, access to free food and supplies);Provide clients with support and linkages to programs and opportunities in the community (e.g., benefits, job programs, health, housing, and treatment services); Provide mobile case management and accompany clients to appointments and external service providers;Provide peer support and case management to court-involved clients struggling with housing insecurity or other behavioral health challenges;Know how to properly administer Naloxone and train community members how to use harm reduction tools including Naloxone and drug test strips;Adhere to policies and procedures of the Community First program and Midtown Community Justice Center;Accurately and efficiently document client interactions and assigned tasks;Contribute to data collection, documenting case management efforts and adding to the monthly report due to stakeholders; Communicate effectively, and in a timely manner, with Midtown staff to provide client updates;Attend weekly supervision, trainings, and staff meetings, and keep supervisor informed of all work-related activities;Participate in community engagement projects, meetings, and events, including during evenings and weekends, as needed;Support Midtown Community Justice Center's initiatives more broadly, as needed; andAdditional relevant tasks, as needed.

    THE OPPORTUNITY

    The RISE Project addresses the intersection of gun violence, intimate partner violence, and gender-based violence in communities most impacted by harm. A project of the Center for Justice Innovation, RISE partners with community members, credible messengers, and local organizations across New York City to build safety, accountability, and healing outside of carceral systems

    The Social Worker will provide individual and group counseling, action planning and interventions, crisis intervention, and community-based responses to intimate partner and gender-basaed violence. The social worker will work with a group of 15-20 participants who have caused harm in their relationships providing individual and group counseling. The social worker will work collaboratively on the transformative initiatives team comprised of social workers, facilitators, and coordinators to provide a range of community-based therapeutic interventions engaging in individuals causing harm in their relationships. 

    Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    Individual Support & Advocacy: 

    Support outreach and recruit eligible participants into the program;Provide weekly individual counseling and support to a group of 15-20 youth and adults who have caused harm in their intimate relationships and/or who have been impacted by intimate partner, dating or gender-based violence;Provide holistic advocacy and resource coordination;Provide crisis intervention support;Conduct home visits and community visits with participants;Provide mitigation support including working with lawyers and defense teams to create packets;Provide court advocacy and support;Provide family-based support including crisis intervention, short-term family counseling, and resource coordination; andWork collaboratively with community partners to coordinate support and intervention.  

    Group Programming:

    Plan group curricula and facilitate therapeutic group sessions for youth and adult programming designed to voluntarily engage individuals who have caused harm in their relationships;Create innovative therapeutic group programming to support community care and wellness; Facilitate a range of workshops and programming to support communities impacted by violence;Support community healing through community-based events and activations;Form partnerships with community stakeholders, organizations, and agencies to strengthen systems of support for participants; andPlan and coordinate special events for participants and their families. 

    Community Engagement:

    Work closely with RISE partners in community including the NYC crisis management system and gun violence prevention organizations, as well as resident stakeholder teams at public housing developments;Provide community trainings on gender-based violence;Support community wellness and healing through community-based events and activations;Form partnerships with community stakeholders, organizations, and agencies to strengthen systems of support for participants;Work collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team;Participate in promotion of programmatic resources, community outreach, and community engagement;Canvass community alongside gun violence prevention teams citywide;Attend community stakeholder meetings, including community board, resident association, precinct council, and other related recurring meetings; andParticipate in community events and collaborative meetings representing the program. 

    Data, Documentation & Compliance:

    Complete all required documentation and enter accurate, timely data into designated databases;Assist with data tracking and reporting in accordance with program and funder requirements; and Support grant-related documentation and reporting as assigned.

    Professional Development & Organizational Participation:

    Attend staff meetings, trainings, and ongoing professional development opportunities;Participating in Justice Center community events and initiatives; andPerform additional relevant duties as assigned.

    Qualifications:

    THE OPPORTUNITY

    Neighbors in Action (NIA), formerly known as the Crown Heights Community Mediation Center, provides anti-violence programs, youth programs, and resource links to community residents in the Crown Heights and Bedford-Stuyvesant (Bed-Stuy) neighborhoods of Brooklyn. Its mission is to encourage communication and understanding, prevent future conflicts, and help foster stronger, healthier neighborhoods. The organization also houses two Cure Violence sites in partnership with the NYC Mayor’s Office: Save Our Streets (S.O.S.) Crown Heights and S.O.S. Bed-Stuy, collectively known as Save Our Streets Brooklyn.

    The Social Worker will provide individual and group counseling, action planning and interventions, youth advocacy and mitigation, crisis intervention, family support, and facilitate community healing events and practices.
