Carilion Clinic Department of Anesthesia and Virginia Tech Carilion (VTC) School of Medicine are accepting applications for a highly skilled Fellowship Trained Obstetric Care Anesthesiologist.
This is an exciting time to join our team as we develop a new Anesthesia Residency Program targeted to begin in Summer 2026.
Clinical responsibilities include patient care in the Anesthesia Department at Carilion Medical Center (CMC), an 835-bed tertiary academic health center. CMC is one of the largest and busiest Level 1 adult and pediatric trauma centers in the region with 49 anesthetizing locations and NORA rooms. CMC is the only regional perinatal health care center in Southwest Virginia and performs over 2000 vaginal and 1000 cesarean deliveries annually. The Birthplace has 12 labor rooms and 2 dedicated obstetric operating rooms located in the unit. Inpatient obstetric coverage is provided by an experienced team of Academic Specialists in General Obstetrics and Gynecology as well as Maternal Fetal Medicine physicians.
The position includes an academic appointment at Virginia Tech in the tenure track at the rank of Clinical Assistant, Associate, or Professor based on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in obstetric anesthesia, a passion for teaching and research, and a commitment to providing exceptional patient care in a high-risk obstetric setting. Research interest with Fralin Biomedical Research Institute-VT is supported.
Responsibilities
Provide anesthesia care during labor, delivery, and postpartum period, ensuring comfort and safety
Collaborate with obstetricians, midwives, and other healthcare professionals to develop individualized anesthetic plans for pregnant patients
Administer epidurals, spinal blocks, and other regional anesthetics to manage pain during labor
Monitor patients' vital signs and anesthesia levels during the delivery process
Conduct pre-operative assessments and consultations to evaluate medical history and determine the appropriate anesthetic technique
Teach and supervise medical students, residents, and fellows in anesthesiology during clinical rotations and academic lectures; research opportunities in interested
Requirements
Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) degree from an accredited institution
ABA Board certification or Board eligibility
Completion of ACGME accredited Obstetric Care Fellowship
Strong knowledge of obstetric anesthesia techniques and medications
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to work effectively in a team-based healthcare environment
Commitment to ongoing professional development and staying up to date with the latest advancements in Obstetric Anesthesiology
Attention to detail and ability to remain calm and focused in high-pressure situations
