Role Overview
The Civil Litigation Associate will independently manage day-to-day file handling and support litigation activities across all phases, including discovery, depositions, motion practice, and trial preparation. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple cases while meeting deadlines.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct initial case analysis and investigation of claims.
Prepare written status reports, including analysis of case developments and procedural impact.
Draft and review pleadings, motions, and discovery documents (interrogatories, requests for production/admission).
Prepare clients for depositions and conduct or defend depositions.
Draft and argue motions, including motions for summary judgment.
Prepare case management conference statements and appear at hearings and ADR proceedings.
Conduct legal research and draft briefs, declarations, and points and authorities.
Assist with trial preparation and litigation budgeting.
Delegate and supervise work assigned to paralegals and support staff.
Preferred Practice Areas
Public entity defense, including dangerous condition of public property and negligent conduct of government employees.
Civil rights (Section 1983) litigation.
Automobile and premises liability defense.
Commercial general liability defense.
Probate and trust litigation (a plus).
Qualifications
J.D. degree from an accredited law school.
Active member of the California Bar.
Minimum 3+ years of litigation experience.
Strong knowledge of civil procedure, evidence, discovery, and motion practice.
Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills.
Ability to prepare and manage litigation budgets.
Experience with California Personal Injury Liens, Medicare, or Howell issues preferred.
Familiarity with trust and probate litigation is a plus.
Technical Skills
Proficient in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
Experience using case management and legal billing software (e.g., Clio, HotDocs, Acrobat).
Familiarity with electronic filing in federal and state courts.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
