Position: Production Planner
Hours: Mon-Fri, 8:00a - 4:30p
Responsible for developing, coordinating, and maintaining production schedules to ensure customer orders are fulfilled on time while optimizing inventory levels, labor utilization, and manufacturing capacity. This role serves as a key link between sales, purchasing, inventory control, manufacturing, and customer service.
Primary Responsibilities:
· Release production packages to the shop floor by procedure R4-8-1 so shop load is balanced across similarly capable workstations to avoid bottlenecks and to meet customer expectations as defined by BETE quality standards and/or the Customer Requirement Plan.
o Select a machine plan using a solid understanding of machine capabilities such as max work-holding size, travel lengths and cutting speeds.
o Select primary or alternate paths for work depending on delivery timelines and quantity restrictions. Identify when product produced on an alternate path is inconsistent with the primary and notify engineering of changes in form, fit or function.
· Monitor shop workload on a daily basis for delivery performance against customer ship dates.
o Collaborate with Lead people to schedule work according to procedure PL3-1-1.
o Proactively resolve overall capacity bottlenecks of the shop by transferring work from highly loaded workstations to underutilized ones so all jobs can be completed by designated due dates.
o Inform Shift Supervisor as soon as capacity changes so staffing can be adjusted to proper levels. Solicit feedback from Shop Manager, Shift Supervisors and Lead People to standardize the process of communicating capacity changes.
o Notify customer service person who entered the order via EDA job review of orders that are late or in danger of being late.
· Provide delivery date estimates for customer orders that are achievable, challenging and backed by statistical analysis.
o Understand shop workload and how current capacity can affect future delivery promises.
o Develop standards and tools for providing delivery dates using input such as total par hours currently in the shop/department and average weekly output.
· Process Change Orders within an average of 2 days. Drive toward mistake-free change orders by standardizing the process and by consistently eliminating waste such as over processing and waiting.
o Update active jobs by adjusting process plan and schedule as dictated by the change order.
o Notify Customer Service as soon as it is known if a Change Order is not possible due to schedule, capacity or other constraints. If a Change Order is not possible, seek to understand why it was ever released by asking questions and looking for training/standardization opportunities.
· Create and release Purchase Orders (PO) for jobs. Ensure expectations for delivery and quality requirements are clearly conveyed to the vendor.
· Manage level of finished goods (FG)/work in process (WIP) inventory to have all catalog items available within a maximum of 21 days. Continuously drive inventory down, striving for the ideal of zero inventory.
o Maintain trigger and targets on product by creating and refining standard formulas that account for order history, raw material lead times, inventory turns and other related metrics.
o Lower inventory levels by reducing total items that have triggers and targets and setting a purge plan for existing inventory. Review triggers and targets on a quarterly basis to identify items that do not need to be stocked. Present findings to manager in a format of your choosing.
· Be a leader in practicing lean by identifying and eliminating manufacturing and process waste.
o Make kaizen improvements to the production control processes on a weekly basis. Report improvements during team meetings.
o Produce measurable process improvements within your domain such as reducing time to release jobs or Change Orders. Collaborate with Production Process Engineer to define metrics, set baselines and set improvement targets; collaborate with manager when questions arise.
· As Needed: Serve as first backup to Material Requirements Planner and Production Process Engineer.
o Participate in Interdepartmental Design Reviews (IDR) by reviewing design packages and anticipating potential manufacturing process or scheduling concerns. Feed this information back to Design and Customer Service via the IDR.
o Create parts lists by interpreting newly released and/or revised drawings.
o Process Design Changes (DC) by updating inventory items and parts lists.
Interpersonal/Communication Skills:
· Actively participate in team meetings by asking questions, proposing creative ideas and giving appreciative and constructive feedback.
· Contribute consistently to positive morale.
· Must have interpersonal skills necessary to effectively work closely with the various technical and support disciplines at BETE. This includes giving and receiving useful feedback, resolving conflicts, relentlessly seeking the root of a problem and devising creative, win-win solutions.
· Ability to manage multiple priorities within set timelines and follow through autonomously. Must consistently meet ‘by when’ dates. Must collaborate with involved parties to create a win-win solution when dates cannot be met.
· Self-motivated with the ability to solve problems independently and creatively.
Education & Qualifications:
· High School Diploma or GED
· 3years’ minimum production planning experience within a manufacturing environment.
