Summary:
The ASPCA Animal Hospital (AAH) is designed to provide life-saving care and relieve suffering for animal victims of cruelty and neglect who come to us through internal partners (our own ASPCA adoption center, kitten nursery, and community advocate team) and external partners (NYPD and other NYC organizations). Additionally, we provide subsidized care exclusively for animals whose owners are experiencing financial challenges and could not otherwise afford medical care for their pet.
The ASPCA Animal Hospital (AAH) Licensed Veterinary Technicians are passionate, level-headed nurses committed to animals living good lives, and who excel in a fast-paced environment. Our nursing staff collaborates effectively with the entire veterinary medical team to provide high quality, practical veterinary care and deliver skilled, efficient, and compassionate treatment to outpatients and hospitalized patients within hospital medical parameters. In addition, AAH nurses provide support and coverage for the Animal Recovery Center (ARC) as needed.

The target hiring range for this role is $34.60 - $37.00. In addition to a competitive salary this role offers a signing bonus and a relocation bonus is available for people living in a qualifying distance from our facility. Summary:
The ARC (Animal Recovery Center) facility is dedicated to the recovery and rehabilitation of victims of cruelty and neglect admitted through NYPD and the ASPCA’s Humane Law Enforcement (HLE) and Community Engagement (CE) programs.
Our dedicated team of more than 45 sheltering, medical, and animal behavior professionals work closely with the ASPCA Animal Hospital, Forensics, Legal Advocacy and Investigations, Behavioral Sciences, Shelter Medicine Services, Community Engagement, Placement, and the Adoption Center teams to ensure coordinated response and operations, and holistic, balanced, high quality care for the animals we serve.
The Licensed Veterinary Technician is responsible for a broad range of medical and administrative tasks in the ARC that serves animals admitted through the NYPD Partnership program. The LVT delivers compassionate nursing care and has a broad knowledge of animal science, medicine, and husbandry, including a basic knowledge of pharmacology, shelter medicine, behavior, and proficient mathematical skills.
One of the most critical functions of this role is serving as a member of a team of medical, behavior and sheltering operations personnel, all dedicated to working together to provide holistic care for victims of cruelty and neglect.
Responsibilities:

Nursing and Shelter Population Care (50%)
Possess in depth knowledge and understanding of veterinary medical concepts
Care for up to 40 cats/dogs per day.
Provide compassionate and quality patient care at all times utilizing Fear Free/Low Stress handling,
Proficiency in various technical nursing skills, including, but not limited to, venipuncture, catheter placement, intubation, anesthesia monitoring, diagnostic imaging, critical care, pharmacology, and dentistry.
Possess critical thinking and multi-tasking skills
Ability to prioritize and re-prioritize based on hospital, ARC and new case needs
Be familiar with infectious diseases, including their prevention and steps to reduce or eliminate transmission
Administer injections, animal vaccinations, medications, treatments, and supportive care measures as directed by departmental Standard Operating Procedures and attending Veterinarian.
Perform venipuncture, run diagnostic tests, and administer fluids as needed.
Maintain and compile weekly order of medical supplies inventory, including emergency drugs.
Ensure that supplies are in-date.
Ensure that all structures and equipment are functional. When equipment is not working properly report to the appropriate team or department for timely repair.
Maintain all necessary logs, inventory, DTM plates and patient records and checklists.
Create and manage accurate treatment sheets, surgery and procedure requests and medication orders
Stay current in knowledge of emergency drugs and protocols.
Accurately communicate information about an animal’s condition to the direct care team.
Support the Medical Supervisor and other veterinarians in the planning and performance of humane euthanasia.
Team, Administrative, Training (30%)
Maintain open mind regarding changes and be willing to learn, implement, and teach new protocols
Provide leadership, onboarding and training to the direct care team and train new hires
Remain composed while working in fast-paced environment with changing priorities
Work well both independently and cooperatively as part of team.
Provide medical information and representation to other ASPCA departments.
Communicate all relevant and necessary patient information to ARC management and veterinarians
Communicate thorough and detailed patient updates (including behavior and operational information) to the on-coming LVTs.
Keep the veterinarians apprised of all medical issues.
Keep the behavior, management and medical teams apprised of all behavior and safety issues.
Adhere to all protocols put forth by Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
Follow, support and model all departmental Standard Operating Procedures.
Follow all behavior sedation procedures and communicate any needed deviation from the plans immediately to ensure the safety of the animals and the team.
Attend all daily shift rounds, monthly staff meetings and scheduled training sessions.
Give presentations/trainings to new and existing staff as directed
Delegate appropriate tasks to the direct care team.
Communicate in effective and professional manner with public and all ASPCA staff members
Administrative duties as needed

What you’ll do:
As the Licensed Veterinary Technician Staff and Floor Manager at the Community Veterinary Clinic (CVC), you’ll be a vital member of our veterinary medical team. You’ll support two medical functions–high quality/high volume spay neuter surgery (HQHVSN) and primary pet care (PPC), which provides preventive and basic veterinary care–for pet cats and dogs living with their families in ASPCA service areas and animals in the care of the rescue community. Throughout the day, you’ll be responsible for directing workflow on the floor, assisting the veterinarian in administering medical treatments and communicating with clients. Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
Medical/Floor Management
Veterinary Technology:
Perform a broad range of veterinary technician functions, including venipuncture, anesthesia monitoring, surgical preparation and assistance, diagnostics, pharmacy and patient recovery
Work side by side with staff veterinarians, technicians, and assistants to support both HQHVSN and PPC for cats and dogs
Use low-stress, gentle animal handling techniques to provide a safe and compassionate environment for animals in our care, our staff, and for our clients
Communicate effectively with clients using a kind, nonjudgmental approach - assist with intake, obtain history and discharge patients
Floor Management:
Oversee workflow on the clinic floor and ensure that all medical staff are efficiently using their time and skills to help the optimal number of patients daily
Be a consistent and visible presence in the clinic to answer questions, make timely adjustments, offer support, receive/give feedback, lend a hand, and foster understanding and commitment to ASPCA’s mission
Ensure staff consistently delivers high-quality patient care and adheres to CM’s standard operating procedures and guidelines
Coach nursing staff to handle patients in a gentle, low-stress manner; instill the guiding principle that everyone can – and should – actively support the animals’ behavioral and mental health in everything they do
Coach staff to communicate effectively with clients, to accurately relay information and to gather patient history and other information using open ended questions and a non-judgmental approach
Ensure technicians comply with DEA regulations and CM protocols for handling and dispensing controlled drugs. Monitor drug logs for accuracy and completeness; correct and report issues to clinic director
Ensure staff take all mandatory rest and meal breaks and adhere to time and attendance guidelines
Training:
Train and onboard new nursing team members, including hands-on skills training and weekly online training modules
Monitor and assess trainees’ progress, provide regular developmental feedback and coaching
Assist with training rotating Interns and Residents and veterinary and technical students through coaching, discussion and demonstration
People Management & Operations
Serve on the CVC Leadership Team
Support a culture of kindness, respect, belonging and teamwork through regular 1:1s, recognition, developmental coaching, performance evaluation and feedback
Work with the CVC Leadership Team to achieve daily clinic goals
Lead a culture of safety and security in the clinic – report safety incidents promptly and address root causes to prevent future injuries or accidents
Assist with hiring new staff
Schedule nursing staff for optimal coverage
Manage team time and attendance - review time sheets for accuracy, review and approve time off requests according to clinic guidelines
Facilitate daily huddles to ensure staff have information they need each day
Meet regularly with the CVC management team; provide open communication, feedback and solutions when things aren’t working as they should
Attend required workshops or meetings

Education and Work Experience:
Must have graduated from an accredited school of veterinary science technology (2 or 4 year program) or the equivalent as determined by the New York State Education Department
Minimum five years experience as a Registered Veterinary Technician in small animal medicine and surgery; experience in shelter medicine and/or high volume spay/neuter surgery strongly preferred
Minimum two years people management experience

The maximum of the hiring range is reserved for candidates with the highest qualifications and relevant experience. The CRC team takes the ASPCA's commitment to the very heart of where help is most urgently needed. We are looking for a VP to lead our team, improving the lives of vulnerable animals who need us most.
The CRC provides intake, care, and outcomes for animals impacted by cruelty and natural disasters, serving as a vital part of the ASPCA’s national efforts to help communities respond effectively to animal cruelty—particularly in cases involving large populations of animals. At the CRC, sheltering, veterinary, and animal behavior professionals work side by side to deliver compassionate, high-quality care. The CRC team is comprised of staff, responders, and a growing number of volunteers and foster families. For the planning of new cases, CRC leadership joins a multi-disciplinary group of ASPCA departments who collaborate to ensure coordinated operations and excellent care, supporting animals at the CRC facility in Columbus and in temporary shelters established in the field.
What You’ll Do
The Vice President of the CRC oversees the ASPCA’s Columbus-based shelter, ensuring consistent, efficient, and forward-thinking operations for animals in the CRC’s care. Reporting to the Senior Vice President of Shelter and Rehabilitation Operations (SVP SRO), the VP leads teams in delivering fully integrated care, while ensuring medical, behavioral, and operational teams work seamlessly together. Under this leadership, pathway planning is a shared responsibility across all functions, balancing excellent care with the urgency required to be ready for the next critical request for assistance. The role also plays an important part in strengthening local engagement, building relationships within the Columbus community to grow adoptions, foster participation, and on-site volunteer support.
The Vice President is a strategic, people-centered leader who drives excellent operations, models collaboration within a complex, matrixed organization, and helps advance the field of animal sheltering. This is an on-site position based at the ASPCA’s Cruelty Recovery Center in Columbus, OH.The regular schedule for this position is Monday through Friday and requires flexibility, as some early mornings, evenings and weekends are required based on operational needs in support of a 7-day per week operation. Work with partnering teams to oversee the management of a contingent workforce that supports CRC operations in Ohio and in temporary field shelters

Provide training, supervision, modeling, coaching and ongoing guidance for direct reports and the teams they lead

Oversee the program operations and day-to-day leadership of the CRC
Continually assess and ensure that departmental policies and practices are aligned within and across ASPCA shelters, including animal pathway planning and outcome decisions; provide guidance to facilitate complex decision-making as needed
Shape, propose, and oversee the CRC budgets under the guidance of the SVP SRO to ensure ongoing alignment with mission and goals; oversee execution of yearly plans, regularly monitoring progress towards key results
Collaborate effectively with infrastructure teams such as: Media & Communications, Development, People, Legal, Real Estate & Facilities Operations, Finance, Information Technology; reaching decisions that support the best practices of all involved
Provide staffing support for the National Field Response team for removals, as well as temporary field shelter set-up and demobilization, and for the Behavioral Sciences and Veterinary Forensic teams during exams and evaluations
Collect and analyze data to identify key metrics, communicate persuasively with key stakeholders, translate into data-driven decision making and drive strategic goals that enhance service delivery, improve animal outcomes, and ensure financial stewardship
Create and maintain communication systems, protocols and procedures that allow the CRC to use resources flexibly in response to ever-changing needs, dividing resources between the home-base facility in Ohio and temporary field shelters
Provide comprehensive, ongoing support for staff members to build resilience and combat the stress often experienced by those working in animal welfare; model maintaining good work/life balance
Testify as needed in criminal cases and provide evidentiary information to support LACR casework
Work closely with the ASPCA’s Learning Lab and facilitate the critical work of this team by hosting groups of learners at the CRC facility

Who We Are
Our Veterinary Support Associates provide a communication pathway for clients, answering over 25,000 inbound calls and making over 15,000 outbound calls annually. Our work includes providing veterinary triage, appointment scheduling, and program support for the ASPCA Adoption Center and ASPCA Animal Hospital in New York City, Community Engagement, Community Medicine (New York, Miami, Los Angeles), ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance (North Carolina), Los Angeles Feline Program Team, and Strategy & Research teams. Who We Are
At the Cruelty Recovery Center (CRC) in Columbus, Ohio, a dedicated team of sheltering, veterinary and animal behavior staff work together to care for animals rescued in ASPCA national cruelty cases and disaster responses. This team works closely with the ASPCA’s National Field & Disaster Response (NFDR), Forensics Sciences, Legal Advocacy, Criminal Practice & Investigations, Behavioral Sciences (BST) and Shelter Medicine Services (SMS) teams to ensure well-coordinated operations and high-quality, collaborative care for animal victims of neglect, abuse and natural disasters. The CRC team also provides care for animals housed in ASPCA temporary field shelters.
What You’ll Do
Veterinarians at the Cruelty Recovery Center will play a critical role on this team ensuring a high quality of care and timely treatment decisions for all animals. They will collaborate with the Senior Director, Veterinary Services (SDVS) and current CRC Veterinarians to provide veterinary care for all animals on-site and must be able to quickly adjust focus and shift priorities based on patient and operational needs. The Veterinarian will also support the Forensic Sciences team in the examination, documentation, and collection of evidence from victims of animal cruelty. The Veterinarian will be providing care for animals housed at the CRC facility and animals housed in temporary shelters, based upon the current needs of the National Field & Disaster Response team.

This position is based at the ASPCA Cruelty Recover Center (CRC), located in Columbus, OH. Compensation
Starting pay for the successful applicant will depend on a variety of factors, including but not limited to education, training, experience, location, business needs, internal equity, market demands or budgeted amount for the role. The target hiring range is for new hire offers only, and staff compensation may increase beyond the maximum hiring range based on performance over time. The maximum of the hiring range is reserved for candidates with the highest qualifications and relevant experience. The expected hiring salary range for this role is set forth below and may be modified in the future.

Veterinary Care and Clinical Case Management
Provide timely, high-quality veterinary care to dogs, cats, and other species as needed, in accordance with ASPCA medical protocols and shelter medicine principles and best practices at the CRC and in temporary shelters
Monitor the health and welfare of the shelter population, identify potential disease outbreaks, and implement appropriate mitigation measures. Ensure appropriate use of quarantine and isolation spaces to manage individual patient needs and protect population health effectively
Provide skilled and efficient diagnosis and treatment of patients with timely recognition of medical conditions requiring care through outside veterinary partners. Work with partner veterinary hospitals as needed, including referring animals for advanced workups and specialty care. Ensure animals receive medical exams upon admission and are provided with ongoing care as appropriate, whether on-site, in foster homes, boarding facilities, or other off-site locations; ensure veterinary care provided is aligned with, and contributes to, timely decisions and efficient outcomes for animals once ownership is obtained
Complete certificates of veterinary inspection, as appropriate, for transfer of animals between facilities and/or placement of animals released from care
Safely and efficiently perform sterilization surgeries, other common soft tissue surgeries, and dental extractions
Direct and manage the treatment of in-house intensive care patients including infectious diseases
Perform humane euthanasia following disposition decisions and/or in the event of urgent medical need, sometimes for a large number of animals at a time
Assist with planning of small- and large-scale case responses and participate in assessment and management of these case animals in the field and on criminal scenes
Support the collection of evidence and documentation of examinations of live and deceased victims of animal cruelty, including but not limited to the performance of clinical forensic exams and gross necropsies, completion of reports for law enforcement, and testifying as an expert witness, as needed
Obtain relevant continuing education as required by the ASPCA and state licensing boards. Remain current on best practices in shelter medicine
Collaboration and Administration
Regularly participate in MBS population rounds with behavioral and sheltering staff: review medical concern boards and collaborate in the moment to ensure timely delivery of integrated care
Closely collaborate with other teams including but not limited to Sheltering, Behavior, Criminal Practice & Investigations, and Forensic Sciences to ensure the overall well-being of each animal, to effectively share information in a timely fashion with relevant stakeholders, and to ensure that decision-making regarding treatment and outcome of each animal is informed by all relevant considerations (medical, behavioral and legal status)
Communicate regularly with other branches using objective language and established communication systems to inform and advise regarding medical conditions of animals at the shelter and in foster care, including outbreaks of infectious disease
Participate in pathway planning to ensure appropriate and timely disposition decisions that consider animals’ physical, medical, social and behavioral needs collectively, for animals on-site as well as those housed at off-site locations
Regularly attend Veterinary Services meetings as well as appropriate interdepartmental and all-staff meetings
Provide oversight to ensure adequate communication and facilitate continuity of care for medical responders in temporary shelters
Maintain accurate and thorough medical documentation in accordance with principles of medical record-keeping, document all exam findings, test results, and treatments. Produce administrative reports and communicate animal status updates as needed
Utilize appropriate chain of custody, evidence transfer and disposition procedure for forensic evidence
Support the medical staff with identifying inventory and ordering needs
Assist in staff training in all areas of sheltering best practices including preventive care, disease outbreak management, and proper use of PPE
Competently and compassionately explain animals’ conditions to staff and responders with easily understood language. Provide mentorship for student externs and other potential teaching opportunities
Offer input and feedback on medical protocols and standards of care
Follow, enforce, and provide input to all CRC and ASPCA protocols and procedures (e.g. information sheets, data sheets, etc.)
Model a standard of continual commitment to improvement in all aspects of CRC care and handling of dogs, cats, and other species
Practice and model low-stress handling techniques to minimize animal fear, anxiety and stress
Education and Work Experience:
Doctorate: Veterinary Medicine or equivalent degree from an accredited veterinary college required
Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Ohio or eligible for licensure; must obtain license within 30 days of hire; Willing and able to maintain veterinary licenses in multiple states to support field work
Clinical experience as a veterinarian working primarily or exclusively with dogs and cats required
Clinical experience with poultry, horses, and other species preferred
Fear Free® and Fear Free Shelters certified or completed within 60 days of employment
USDA Category 2 accredited or obtained within 3 months of employment
Knowledge of and experience working within Incident Command System (ICS) structure preferred; completion of ICS 100, ICS 200, IS0010.a, IS0011.a, and IS0700.b training courses within 3 months of employment

Medical
Care for 35-40 cats and dogs per day in spay/neuter surgery
Administer injections including anesthetics, pain medications, vaccinations and other medications
Intubate animals, place intravenous catheters, perform venipuncture and administer fluids as needed
Monitor vital signs of sedated and anesthetized patients in pre-operative, operative, and post-operative phases
Provide treatments and supportive care according to the CM Standard Operating Procedures and as directed by attending Veterinarian
Provide a safe and compassionate environment for animals in our care, our staff, and for our clients by using low-stress handling techniques
Assist with patient exams, take medical history, perform diagnostic testing, and prepare medications to go home with the client/patient
Maintain all necessary controlled substance drug logs and patient records
Stay current in knowledge of emergency drugs and protocols
Ensure anesthetic machines, pulse oximeters, scales, and other equipment are functional and report equipment that is not working properly
Assist with humane euthanasia in accordance with ASPCA policy and CM protocols
Work with coworkers to clean and disinfect animal areas, equipment, instruments and facility while utilizing appropriate personal protective equipment
Provide support and medical services in special cases as needed, including evaluation of animals living in hoarding situations

The ASPCA Animal Hospital (AAH) is designed to provide life-saving care and relieve suffering for animal victims of cruelty and neglect who come to us through internal partners (our own ASPCA adoption center, kitten nursery, and community advocate team) and external partners (NYPD and other NYC organizations). Additionally, we provide subsidized care exclusively for animals whose owners are experiencing financial challenges and could not otherwise afford medical care for their pet.
The ASPCA Animal Hospital (AAH) Licensed Veterinary Technicians are passionate, level-headed nurses committed to animals living good lives, and who excel in a fast-paced environment. Our nursing staff collaborates effectively with the entire veterinary medical team to provide high quality, practical veterinary care and deliver skilled, efficient, and compassionate treatment to outpatients and hospitalized patients within hospital medical parameters. In addition, AAH nurses provide support and coverage for the Animal Recovery Center (ARC) as needed.

Summary:
The ARC (Animal Recovery Center) facility is dedicated to the recovery and rehabilitation of victims of cruelty and neglect admitted through NYPD and the ASPCA’s Humane Law Enforcement (HLE) and Community Engagement (CE) programs.
Our dedicated team of more than 45 sheltering, medical, and animal behavior professionals work closely with the ASPCA Animal Hospital, Forensics, Legal Advocacy and Investigations, Behavioral Sciences, Shelter Medicine Services, Community Engagement, Placement, and the Adoption Center teams to ensure coordinated response and operations, and holistic, balanced, high quality care for the animals we serve.
The Licensed Veterinary Technician is responsible for a broad range of medical and administrative tasks in the ARC that serves animals admitted through the NYPD Partnership program. The LVT delivers compassionate nursing care and has a broad knowledge of animal science, medicine, and husbandry, including a basic knowledge of pharmacology, shelter medicine, behavior, and proficient mathematical skills.
One of the most critical functions of this role is serving as a member of a team of medical, behavior and sheltering operations personnel, all dedicated to working together to provide holistic care for victims of cruelty and neglect.
Responsibilities:

Nursing and Shelter Population Care (50%)
Possess in depth knowledge and understanding of veterinary medical concepts
Care for up to 40 cats/dogs per day.
Provide compassionate and quality patient care at all times utilizing Fear Free/Low Stress handling,
Proficiency in various technical nursing skills, including, but not limited to, venipuncture, catheter placement, intubation, anesthesia monitoring, diagnostic imaging, critical care, pharmacology, and dentistry.
Possess critical thinking and multi-tasking skills
Ability to prioritize and re-prioritize based on hospital, ARC and new case needs
Be familiar with infectious diseases, including their prevention and steps to reduce or eliminate transmission
Administer injections, animal vaccinations, medications, treatments, and supportive care measures as directed by departmental Standard Operating Procedures and attending Veterinarian.
Perform venipuncture, run diagnostic tests, and administer fluids as needed.
Maintain and compile weekly order of medical supplies inventory, including emergency drugs.
Ensure that supplies are in-date.
Ensure that all structures and equipment are functional. When equipment is not working properly report to the appropriate team or department for timely repair.
Maintain all necessary logs, inventory, DTM plates and patient records and checklists.
Create and manage accurate treatment sheets, surgery and procedure requests and medication orders
Stay current in knowledge of emergency drugs and protocols.
Accurately communicate information about an animal’s condition to the direct care team.
Support the Medical Supervisor and other veterinarians in the planning and performance of humane euthanasia.
Team, Administrative, Training (30%)
Maintain open mind regarding changes and be willing to learn, implement, and teach new protocols
Provide leadership, onboarding and training to the direct care team and train new hires
Remain composed while working in fast-paced environment with changing priorities
Work well both independently and cooperatively as part of team.
Provide medical information and representation to other ASPCA departments.
Communicate all relevant and necessary patient information to ARC management and veterinarians
Communicate thorough and detailed patient updates (including behavior and operational information) to the on-coming LVTs.
Keep the veterinarians apprised of all medical issues.
Keep the behavior, management and medical teams apprised of all behavior and safety issues.
Adhere to all protocols put forth by Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
Follow, support and model all departmental Standard Operating Procedures.
Follow all behavior sedation procedures and communicate any needed deviation from the plans immediately to ensure the safety of the animals and the team.
Attend all daily shift rounds, monthly staff meetings and scheduled training sessions.
Give presentations/trainings to new and existing staff as directed
Delegate appropriate tasks to the direct care team.
Communicate in effective and professional manner with public and all ASPCA staff members
Administrative duties as needed
