The Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) Department at the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center (AMC) is hiring a Senior Veterinarian for our ER.
The AMC is one of the nation’s largest facilities for animal care, research, and education. The state-of-the-art hospital operates 24 hours per day, 365 days per year, with 55,000 patient visits annually. Over 140 veterinarians comprise the professional staff, representing all specialties, and providing a progressive, stimulating, and rewarding working environment.
About Emergency & Critical Care at AMC
The ECC Department is currently comprised of ten board-certified specialists in ECC, seven internship-trained emergency doctors, nine residents, 35 licensed technicians (several with their VTS in ECC), and 22 assistants. In our open new-renovated ICU, patients are co-managed by ECC and allied services or managed primarily by the ECC team. Our ER is at the hospital’s center, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and has an active caseload of nearly 20,000 visits per year. AMC is the only VETCOT certified, Level one trauma center in the region.
The Senior Veterinarian in ER will play a paramount and integral role in the Emergency and Critical Care Department. The clinical responsibilities of our ER doctors include primary case receiving as well as oversight of the interns and ECC residents seeing emergency cases. The overnight rotation for ER doctors includes oversight and monitoring of all pets hospitalized in the ICU and of the interns in the ER. The senior ER doctor schedule varies among daytime, swing, and overnight shifts, during which time you will be working alongside 1-3 senior ER doctors and/or criticalists and 4-6 rotating interns (shift depending). Senior ER doctors share responsibilities in the ER with the boarded criticalists and senior ECC residents.
The Senior Veterinarian in ER role is demanding but extremely gratifying as it allows the opportunity for infinite growth. Efficiency, diplomacy, patience, and confidence are essential character traits for our doctors, as are both a desire to teach and to continue to learn. We encourage our senior ER doctors to participate in both internal and external continuing education opportunities and to stay apprised of current literature as it applies to ECC.

Employment Type: Full TimeThis Licensed Veterinary Technician position is part of the Anesthesia Service and will assist in anesthesia interdepartmentally throughout AMC. It includes working 8.75 shifts for a total of 70 hours in a two-week pay period. The technician will support the Anesthesiologists with all the tasks associated with a both special routine =low risk and critical or emergent=high risk cases, including mitigating anesthesia, troubleshooting, developing drug and technique plans, and case training/mentoring new anesthesia personnel.
Minimum Qualifications
The ideal candidate for this position must have a minimum of one year of experience as a Licensed Veterinary Technician with exposure to veterinary anesthesia, surgery, emergency/critical care, or a closely related clinical environment. Candidates with advanced anesthesia skills and the ability to perform all the tasks associated with both low risk and with higher risk critical and emergent anesthesia procedures are encouraged to apply. Must have a New York State Veterinary Technician’s license or permit.

Education:
Associate degree or bachelor’s degree in veterinary technology from an AVMA accredited school.Experience:
Minimum one year of clinical experience as a Licensed Veterinary Technician. Previous anesthesia, surgical, emergency, or critical care experience is preferred. Specialty or referral hospital experience is preferred but not required.Duties and responsibilities
Must have working knowledge of pharmaceuticals and equipment used in sedation and anesthesia Must have ability to practically handle both low risk and high risk sedation and anesthesia including special needs such as MRI, CT, fluoroscopy, airway procedures, and minimally invasive surgery. Must have ability to teach all levels of learners including starting and peer technicians, assistants, interns, & residents Must have ability to answer questions regarding anesthesia, sedation for different species from multiple departments, occasionally referring veterinarians and technicians with assistance from anesthesiologists The primary responsibility of this position is anesthesia, and providing anesthesia support for all AMC services. Troubleshoot, operate, and care of surgical and anesthetic equipment Participate in an overnight anesthesia on-call rotation Work with minimal supervision Accurately complete all necessary technical procedures and treatments, with strict adherence to department and hospital protocols Mentor and train LVTs as necessary Be involved in identification of cardiopulmonary arrests and resuscitation of patients Assist and instruct interns and residents regarding policies and protocols and perform all other related duties as requiredOur comprehensive benefits package includes:

Utilize hospital computer systems to document medical records and communicate with clients and teammates
Manage the financial needs of the hospital by maintaining accurate balances through collection of client transactions, following all cash and credit card handling procedures, and following proper opening and closing procedures
Excellent customer service skills and an exceptional level of communication in a professional manner
Advocate for pets through client education on preventative care, pet health needs, treatment recommendations and all other hospital services/procedures
Maintain a positive attitude in all interactions with clients, pets and other teammates
Demonstrate ability to show empathy toward clients and treat pets with compassion and respect
Utilizing standard office/business equipment
Knowledge of veterinary medical terminology and procedures, knowelege of Cornerstone preferred
