The successful candidate will be responsible for performing autopsies and physical examinations to determine the cause and manner of death, preparing detailed reports, and testifying in court as an expert witness. This role also involves maintaining medical examiner records, establishing and enforcing policies for the documentation of the chain of custody, and ensuring the quality and consistency of all reports for trial and prosecution purposes. The Chief Forensic Pathologist will oversee a team of forensic pathologists, business and administrative staff, an investigations manager, death investigators, and forensic autopsy/morgue technicians, and will be expected to provide guidance, direction, and work review to the support staff. Applicants must have a medical degree from an accredited school, residency training in anatomic pathology or a related field, and a fellowship in forensic pathology. A current NC medical license and board certifications in the relevant specialties are required. The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years' of experience as a forensic pathologist, with a preference for those with 10 years' of experience and a strong background in supervisory roles. The role demands a high level of knowledge in forensic medicine, laboratory procedures, and safety protocols, as well as the ability to effectively communicate, make sound decisions, and maintain composure under pressure. The Chief Forensic Pathologist will also be involved in the development and implementation of policies and procedures in compliance with state statutes and contracts, and will be expected to participate in the office's financial and budget processes.
